Gun Control Debate #4

There anomalies.

So we don't care?

I disagree about them being anomalies though. They're still American cities and there are many variables between cities' demographics, crime rates, unemployment rates, etc.

I know how many gun deaths there are but there is no way to equally compare. Just as the oft Australia comparison is made, is apples and oranges. Take 300 million folks out of the u.s. and I bet firearm death rates would go down drastically. The last time someone killed someone where I live, it was a cop, who had to kill a guy from out of town. He fired on them.

But the stats are not giving totals, they are per capita.

I'd bet a dime to a donut that if we took 300 million people out of this country, the per capita would drop drastically.

Damn.

And people claim America is the greatest country in the world. This is shameful. :(

I can't see the reasoning behind that.

South america/mexico dominate the list.

O/T (sorta — boy, Hunter S. Thompson did love his guns!)

Thank you, rsd!

Yep, I have a fondness for HST, too. I've read a lot of his stuff, studied the "gonzo journalism" and "new journalism" movements, 60s and 70s counterculture. Everything he did makes me a little uncomfortable to know and/or read, but I just can't help myself. Maybe that's part of his magnetism.

Long read: "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved." 1970, "written under duress by Hunter S. Thompson."

Another of my pet peeves, and I know it's O/T, but alcohol has destroyed so many lives and seems to gets a pass ((I drink occasionally, I admit that, but not to excess.) No, alcohol and firearms do not belong together. Neither do alcohol and driving.

A drink with dinner out, or a couple at home, is one thing; A drunk person, driving up in their vehicle, and pulling a firearm out of the front of their pants, and waving it around, are three things, that I doubt that anyone wants to see!

EuTu, I think you and I share an affection for HST, he's from my state, as you probably know.. We have a festival, in his honor. I hope to attend this year. However, he was an enigma. How he survived, with his lifestyle, as long as he did, mystifies me.

Love your new avatar, btw.

35 million people spread out around a country of our size, it just wouldnt be like it is now. We have 330 some odd million people in this country, from all corners of the world, and so many cultures, that Im like, I think it was Carlin, who said it, Im surprised we get along as well as we do.

Another country which saw a drop in violence was Venezuela, although this was not a good thing, the report says.

The reason for the drop is not because of a fall in violence, but a weakening of government control meaning authorities can no longer effectively count the number of homicides in their cities.

Researchers point to two cities -*Cumaná and*Gran Barcelona - which were removed from the top 50 table but only because they could not effectively establish the murder rate.

O/T That book was an amazing ride! Especially for a Ky. gal who never made it out of the very decadent & depraved Derby infield. Also his book about embedding with the Hell's Angels was a wild ride too. Saw them ride into bike week one year. Whoa Nellie, HST had some.
