A gun safety bill supported by Maine’s Republican senator is now progressing in both houses of Congress.

Sen. Susan Collins says she’s on board with Senate legislation that would require the feds to inform states within 24 hours when a person prohibited from buying guns fails the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. A bipartisan group of senators introduced the bill last week.

I agree, and tend to think these incidents are an accumulation of other problems that our youth face these days as society has broken down in many ways, and there is a lot of mental illness caused by those factors and depression is also at an all time high among populations world wide. An unhealthy society is the symptom of the social disease IMO.

In older folks, it's usually caused by them not wishing to be a burden, or, getting laid off, debt piling up, looking at some scary stuff after working half their lives. To be quite blunt, if I am ever looking at the prospect of being confined to a nursing home, or am told Alzheimer's is rearing its ugly head? I prefer to go out on my own terms.

With the first gun control measure signed into law in decades, a key Republican member of the Florida Constitutional Revision Commission has drafted a proposal to make sure the age limits and waiting period stand up to any constitutional challenge from opponents.

The proposal, by Miami attorney and CRC member Roberto Martinez, was filed with the CRC on Friday, just moments after Gov. Rick Scott signed SB 7026 into law, which bans the sale of any firearm in Florida to anyone over the age of 21, imposes a three-day waiting period on all handgun purchases and bans bump stocks.

Two of my friend's parent has died after having Alzheimers for years. They did not recognise that they had it. They put down memory lapses to aging and by then it was too late for them to handle it themselves.

I would personally support it and include trigger modifications. However, if we don't do something about "corporations" being seen as "people" in Citizens United, we can't get the money off the table and out of the politicians pockets.

The story I linked spoke to gun sellers in Utah and South Dakota. Wonder how much it varies from region to region.

It also says the makers of Ruger and Smith & Wesson weapons have seen stocks/sales/earnings slump in the last 3 months. I do wonder about other gunmakers.

"Over the past 30 years, U.S. gun production has tripled. Nine million guns were produced in 2015, compared with 3 million in 1986. Those numbers come from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a government agency.

I watched my grandmother waste away for years. I watched my former mil become a shell. I've watched my former fil, who now has moderate dementia, and who was very active, but is now confined to a bed and in adult diapers, in, and I will say, a nice nursing home, but still. If I live to see my youngest grandchild become an adult, that's enough for me. Quality over quantity. No one is to lie to me if I'm told I'm getting Alzheimer's. I think medicine can extend life when it's not in the best interest of the patient.
