NATIONAL SCHOOL WALKOUT LIVE: Thousands of students rally in solidarity to end gun violence

http://abcnews.go.com/US/students-c...ce_4380645_1_takeover_2_column_live_headlines

“I’m just mad there’s no action by our government representatives,” Daniel, a junior in Brooklyn, New York, said today.

“It’s all thoughts and prayers; it’s all talk,” he told ABC News. “After a gun violence tragedy there’s a speech talking about how we need change but there never is change.”

Thank you for the pictures Croquet.

I'm watching coverage and they keep cutting away to politicians. We're heard enough from them! I want to hear from the students.

EtTu, thank you for posting all these! [emoji178][emoji175][emoji178][emoji111]

Now that is a powerful image!

Good job, kids! Speak your minds! Remind others that you are our future, you have voices and demand to be seen and heard! I'm proud of these kids! School is for learning, not hiding from a gunman! And these kids are learning about how to bring about change and are also teaching and reminding society that kids and people are more important than guns! Woo hoo!

These kids were all born after Columbine. They've been dealing with this their whole lives and now they are old enough to vote. Someone asked why was this shooting different and I think it was where it happened and when it happened, and the age of the victims and survivors. The students in Parkland took action immediately and galvanized students across the country.

I imagine if I were 18 and had spent 12 years wondering if my school was next (or if I lived in Chicago) gun reform would be the main thing on my mind when it was time to vote.

Teacher accidentally fires gun and injures student during safety lesson

A teacher accidentally discharged a firearm while teaching a public safety class, injuring one student at a Northern California school on Tuesday, police said.

Dennis Alexander, who is Seaside City's mayor pro tem and a reserve officer with the Sand City Police Department, was teaching a lesson at Seaside High School in Seaside, California when he pointed his gun into the ceiling and accidentally fired it, said Abdul Pridgen, the city's police chief.

A 17-year-old student was injured by a bullet fragment or by debris that fell off the ceiling, Pridgen said.

Very proud of these kids. I'm glad they have the support of their schools and teachers.

When I was a teen, we did the same thing to protest the Vietnam War. We didn't have support from the principal, IIRC. He was pretty cool about it, though. No one got detention.

YAY . Now the same class of people who we have denied rights to for years.Running dogs into schools , searching cars parked in school parking lots. Charging them as adults for offensives that would be legal if they were of age.. They dont even understand their rights because they were never given them. As A matter of fact they were taught those rights do not matter. This crap is gross.

My veteran friend, and I, who allowed me to bend his ear, on this topic, are so proud of these kids. In his words, "They deserve this." :heartbeat:

I’m just thankful that my kids’ school district is not participating in this ridiculous walk out. Schools are for learning. I don’t want my kids wasting their time trying to make a political statement. It’s unbelievable me that any school would allow students to leave class for any kind of protest, no matter what it is. If my kids’ school was going to participate in this, I would have taken the day off work and had my kids stay home. Kids can do all the protesting they want ON THEIR OWN TIME.

Social learning is equally important as educational learning. These kids are learning how to stand up for what they believe in and a cause that directly affects them. I'd rather my child participated in something like this, than had to miss days and days of school because of a shooter coming to their school. Too many people are politically apathetic, and these children are showing that they care for society as a whole. Bravo to them for standing up for their principles!

In a world that has seen political apathy for so long in first-world countries I'm proud as heck to see these children assert their rights to protest against a system that is proven time and again not to be working. For these kids they are dealing with a genuine fear that could hit them anytime, because of a lax gun control system. They shouldn't have to go to school in fear. These young people who are protesting put a lot of older people to shame, they show a lot more social awareness than some of their elders. Thank the universe for these children who care more about the good of society than individual privilege.

It’s legal and they have every right to do it. Protesting “on their own time” — this IS their time, imo. It certainly isn’t yours, tbh.

It’s fine that you disagree with it. That’s your right, too.

It seems students can still be disciplined in the same manner as skipping class. I don't imagine many schools will discipline the kids as long as they do their protest quietly. What they are not allowed to do is disrupt the kids that remain in class.

http://www.katc.com/story/37679452/lpss-issues-statement-on-cancellation-of-voluntary-walkout

Plans for coordinated student walkouts have been making national news and have already engendered disciplinary threats from some school administrators. Since the law in virtually all jurisdictions requires students to go to school, schools can typically discipline students for missing class, even if they’re doing so to participate in a protest or otherwise express themselves. But what the school can’t do is discipline students more harshly because they are walking out to express a political view or because school administrators don’t support the views behind the protest. In other words, any disciplinary action for walking out cannot be a response to the content of the protest.
