I think LE has focused on SA for several other reasons besides the fact that he walked out on his job that day (IIRC, SA's employer never said that he quit his job - his employer said he simply left that morning. SA is the one who gave conflicting stories about whether or not he quit).
You don't know what SA said, you only know what BD said.
I think one of the reasons LE has focused on SA as a suspect is because he threatened to kill BD, CD, and possibly also HD on Valentine's Day the year before.
Why would idle threats in a domestic dispute a year before have anything to do with the current situation? There was no indication of any actual violence, nor any indication that it was a common occurrence.
SA was the last known person to have seen HD before she disappeared, and also claimed that she told him she was going to her Dad's and then to a friend's house for a sleepover. Her Dad says she didn't come over that afternoon. Her friend, MB, as well as MB's mother, said that no sleepover had been planned. They also said they had not heard from HD that day.
There were other people who claimed to have seen HD that day, including after when SA said he last saw her. In addition, we don't know what SA actually said, only what BD said, and she has a history of paraphrasing everything.
SA lied about his whereabouts on the day that HD went missing - claiming that he went directly from work that morning to his mother's house, when in fact his cell phone pings placed him in the vicinity of C-City and BD's house shortly after BD left for work.
He didnt tell BD at the time (again, according to her). He didn't say he went directly to his mothers house, he said he went to his mothers house. Note the difference. People assumed he went directly there, but instead he went first to the grandmothers house (which you would expect) and then to the mothers house when no one was home at the GM.
By his own admission, SA said he threatened to kill BD. The affidavit states that he also admitted to threatening to kill HD. By his own admission, when LE asked him "Who should we be looking at?" after HD went missing, SA said they should look @ both him and BD.
Again, idle threats in a domestic dispute. The reports of the incident itself doesnt mention any threats against HD, that was added only after HD dissappeared and allmost certainly was due to misunderstanding by SA and/or the investigators during questioning. By saying that they should look at himself and BD he wasn't saying that they were they persons responsible, he was saying that he expected LE to be looking at family first.
HD's grandmother has stated that HD was afraid of SA. She also stated that HD told her that SA lurked @ her bedroom door.
This according to the GM, who didn't like SA anyway. Strangely enough, she didnt tell anyone else (such as CD or BD) about it at the time it supposedly happened, so that puts her credibility in doubt. She could say anything and if HD isnt around to dispute it, who is to say otherwise.
SA has an attorney to defend him - he can speak on his client's behalf if he feels inclined. I don't feel particularly inclined to defend SA, based on what has been reported, and based on what I know about men who target single mothers with children, so that they can gain access to their children.
There is a confirmed history of domestic violence & drug use in the Dunn household. I refuse to pretend it doesn't play a role in Hailey's disappearance.
What confirmed history violence and drug use? The only person arrested for drug use is CD and he didn't live in the house anymore (allbeit across the road instead). There were no arrests for violence.
