Newborn baby abandoned in trash bin rushed to hospital in serious condition

The Kahala resident who rescued the baby told police he heard a woman screaming around 11:30 p.m.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police have opened a child abandonment case after a Kahala resident saved a newborn baby girl from a trash bin Saturday night, officials said.

Authorities said a neighbor heard a woman screaming at about 11:30 p.m.

As he called 911, he said he saw the woman give birth, put the baby inside the trash bin and walk away.

HPD said the man ran out and rescued the baby.

I checked quickly to see if there are Safe Havens in Hawaii. I found an article in Hawaiian media but it turned out to be about a case in Indiana. Does anybody know about Hawaii for sure?

Safe haven laws permit any person to surrender a newborn not older than 72 hours at any hospital, fire station, police station, or with any emergency services personnel without fear of prosecution. The newborn must be in an unharmed condition while surrendering it.[ii] HRS § 587D-1 defines “unharmed condition” as a condition where the child is alive and there is no evidence of injury to the newborn child’s physical or psychological health or welfare. The child should not be a victim of sexual contact or conduct including rape, sodomy or molestation; should be provided with basic needs of food and clothing; and should not be provided any harmful, detrimental, or dangerous drugs.
