Agree. I don't necessarily have an opinion, yet, as to which route SC took. I drove that road twice, in a VW van (haha), in the mid seventies. It took forever, with huge gully-like ruts in the road. Cannot imagine speeding on it.
Exactly, I don't think any kind of bike time should be used to estimate a truck time, and it would be foolish to go fast in the dark. Last thing he would need is a truck stuck Kaupo side.

I thought Molly's vehicle didn't get to the point in the road of the crime scene. I thought they parked and walked, but I have not heard that testimony since the day it was given.

It still makes no sense going to Hana with the facts we have, but we know he did. Paraquat's is before the halfway mark, and it's a brutal road to drive there and back for no reason with a corpse or captive in the back seat. The must be either a person or a place that caused him to go.

When we speak of a comfort zone, not too sure that Kaupo fits for SC. Think he knows the Hana Highway much better for going fast, knows those curves very well.

LOL! I drove it in a small-ish rental car the last time, maybe 6 or 7 years ago and the road was as you describe. There were ruts and rocks for miles. Hana Hwy. is narrow and twisty in places, but it's paved all the way. I personally wouldn't speed on either the Keanae side or the Kaupo side.

The one thing that makes the cell phone info work is if we assume that he didn't do anything to Charli's phone, that it was with her (again, did that skirt have pockets?), and just sent out the last Life 360 ping at 9:49 before the battery died. Then we can create a timeline that makes sense with the other evidence.
Interesting. I thought though that the Life 360 ping was 10:56, a bit over an hour past the time SC sent that 9:49 text. And have we heard yet about Charli's calls that Sunday night? If so I totally missed it. I heard about Saturday activity for her.

My coverage of yesterday was as spotty as Verizon coverage on Hana Highway. Bits and pieces.

I just don't see how 3 hours is enough time. In fact, I make it actually less, because It's very unlikely that he raced out the door at 8:15 after talking to Cassie and headed straight for the Hana highway. He had to meet Charlie, or get picked up by her & there's always stuff to futz with...I would add 15 minutes as a matter of course to the time Cassie gave, which pulls the timeline line in even tighter.

So... at which point and how many minutes out on the Hana Highway going towards Haiku does the phone make the switch from 2G to 3G? That would be the place marking 11:20pm, which would give us more time for our timeline. Because we need more time.

My source was in court Monday, when Special Agent Easter testified. According to his testimony, SC's phone DID go Kaupo side to return to Haiku.

And as for the road, my previous car, a Mitsubishi Lancer (small 4 door) did just fine on the back way (Kaupo) many times, so an SUV would be NO problem at all. It is longer than Hana Hwy, BUT there's way less curves so if someone knew the road a bit they could definitely haul a** on the straightaways. Also, a week ago I went Hana, came back 6pm, I timed my ride, made it from Hana to Huelo in 1'hr 5 mins. Close to my record time of 1 hr flat... And yeah I was hauling lol. My Lancer ALSO made it halfway down Paraquats, I took it by mistake a few hrs ago, and once it got nasty I was lucky to be able to turn around, even tho it was narrow. After 38 yrs on Maui most roads don't intimidate me, even in a car, so with an SUV, even more is possible if you're used to the rough roads.

Hopefully, there's a record of the transaction and a recording from their video camera. :D

Wouldn't that be the ace up the prosecution's sleeve?

But we don't yet know if he did go to Hana for gas.

No gas in Hana that time of night, only pump there definitely closed!

The pump there can be used after-hours, it has a card swipe on it. I've gassed up after-hours before there. Pic

IMO, not to be argumentative, heather gray sweatshirts and T-shirts are very popular and common and have been for years.
Locals: is there a gas station in Hana that stays open until 9:30 pm or later?

NO!!!! And for those wondering, most vehicles ( my brothers big lifted truck, my sisters van, & my 4 door small sedan) consistently use 1/4 tank each way to Hana. (Different size tanks but ALL take 1/4 tank each way cuz size of vehicle and varying gas mileage)

I wonder if the back side of the island is where he ultimately disposed of Charli's remains. I've long thought it would be a much better place to dispose of a body than along Hana Hwy because it's soooo desolate and gets comparatively little traffic compared to Hana Hwy.

Did he perhaps scope it out on Sunday night, then take the Kaupo route again on Monday to dispose of her newly dismembered remains? I wonder....

Thanks, Alohaj. That's what I thought Easter implied, but I have no inclination to review the testimony again to verify.

Just spoke to hasegawas store that owns gas station, they close 7:30 and cannot pump gas when closed. Do you live on Maui Moxie?

Pua and Kapua,

This is what PT recently posted about travel times from Hana to Haiku going both directions....I think...not completely sure what he meant by the last sentence. I assume he meant Haiku to Hana the backway.

What I meant was its not really any faster to go Kaupo way than it is Keanae way from Hana proper.

My court friend told me from the beginning their theory was that he drove back through Kaupo side. That was Easters testimony.

  • #236
Absolutely PT, Kaupo usually longer but even more remote. And no cops unless they were called out there. Good way to go to try to be undetected.

Thank you for the local input, Aj.
What town do you all start from to use 1/4 tank to Hana? Wailuku or there abouts?

Hmmm...That's interesting because I posted earlier how I was there in 2008 around 7:30 PM and the gas station appeared to be closed yet I was still able to gas up by swiping my debit card. They must have just been closing down for the night when I pulled in if what you say is true.

Yes, I understood what you were saying, PT. I reposted it because your time shaved off 45 mins from Google's estimate from Hana to Haiku and I trust those that actually drive the roads where they live over Google's formula calculations.
