Sheriff at Presser:

Cellphones had pinged off those towers in areas.

Foliage was too thick to see the ground in April - Leaves already on the trees/plants.

(Which is what I was saying before)

Those were probably volunteers/citizens searching in April. Later they were more LE searchers.

"At the time the scene is completely secured."

There's a forensic anthropology team from UTK on the scene. No one can get to the scene, so don't bother to go there.

"No information except the pings came in from that area."

But there was no reason to do an LE ground search in that area.

There were searches by FLIR helicopters and planes. FLIR couldn't see through the leaves on the trees at that time.

There's a logging road a few feet from where the remains were found. A jeep or ATV could get to that area.

Were ginseng hunters eligible for reward money? Sheriff: "I don't have a clue."

The sheriff was just talking about why they didn't find her sooner when I chimed in. He mentioned the foliage cover and said they had searchers and LE around the different locations and everything was searched at one time or another. Yet he says a search never took place in that area. I went back to the scanner last night and to my notes. There were searchers on ATV's in the area of Yellow Spring Road and I-40 two nights after she vanished. Shortly after they got out there a tornado warning was called for Decatur county and everyone was brought back. From the maps it looks like this isn't too terribly far from where she was found. Impossible to say if they would have searched that area if the weather was better or if some of the ATV's made it out there and just couldn't see her under all the brush. Sad.

Gosh, I remember that bad weather now! I had forgotten that, but I do recall it rained a great deal right after she disappeared! Thanks for the reminder.

I'm not surprised that the search there was mainly volunteers and the foliage was too thick. It was like a needle in a haystack. Even many here on WS had theories that she had been taken out of state or further into the woods, so it's just one of those unfortunate truths that she was right there all along.

Hmmm...good enough reason to me for a search to be conducted there. They should have been all over it. If not, why not?
