Horrible Christmas card? You judge

I just want to grab that " woman" and shake the crap out of her!! i won't even begin to say what I think of the supposed " man" of the family!

I saw this weeks ago and it was disturbing then, back when I thought it was JUST duct tape on the mouth. Just noticed the string of lights "tying" the girls up.

Um. That's just downright freaking CREEPY. The silencing was one thing (bad enough) but they're all tied up? Like hostages?

HA HA SO FUNNY.

I didn't notice that either until you pointed it out. Words fail.

No thanks. I don't want to celebrate anything that makes it seem legitimate to treat women as second-class people. Perhaps you do -- and I guess that's your right. I think it's kind of sick that anyone thinks this is 'good belly laugh' material. It's no different than jokes about Polish people, blacks, handicapped people, etc.

As for 'no wonder people hate each other' -- attitudes like the one in this "Christmas card joke", and attitudes like yours that defend it, do nothing but help people justify hatred towards each other, because they reinforce ideas about how some people are better than others.

It's your choice to see the world that way, but you won't be successful in trying to shame me into buying into such a worldview.

No shaming intended. It just says a lot to me about how some people cannot tolerate a joke anymore And how ready people are to judge over something so meaningless. And dislike others. It is really too bad.

Just like women who talk constantly tie up men with their tongues. Wicked smart on wife/photographers part. It takes brains to come up with visual humour like this.

What?

I think that if they think it is funny than who cares? I don't, but everyone has a right to think what they like. No one died. No one was maimed.

Why does everyone have to decide for everyone else what they should think or what is funny??? Some people enjoy laughing at themselves.

I find it amusing that while saying "everyone has different sense of humor!!!!", posts get made that if you DON'T laugh at THIS particular thing, you clearly have zero sense of humor.

Or maybe our sense of humor is different and we laugh at other things?

sbm, bbm

To be fair, I'd replace "cannot tolerate a joke" with "cannot tolerate a sexist, bigoted joke".

I'm surprised I haven't read "political correctness" yet in this thread. Let me jump in before we do -- in this context, when someone invokes "political correctness", it's to say "well, I know that I'm going to be offending people here, but let me blame them for not liking it when I insult them, and imply through my actions that they deserve to be ridiculed by others."

I don't think that anyone was saying that someone could not find something funny.

By the same token, should people not have the same right to think or express when they find something offensive or bigoted? Or is it a one-way street?

Men are free to walk away if they feel they're being tied up by a woman's tongue. Women talking too much is an old stereotype that needs to die.

Especially since it's been proven to be the opposite! LOL There was a study, I'll have to find it, that showed men talk substantially more than women in daily life.

I think the point is that many of us don't find the image "meaningless". I have plenty of belly laughs. As a matter of fact, I love funny stuff. But an image of a woman and two little girls bound and gagged isn't funny. It's demeaning at the very least. We've seen far to many situations here on W.S. of women and children abducted, abused and killed for me to feel this image is meaningless.

I am old enough to remember a time when this card would have seemed funny due to society's prevailing gender stereotypes.

It makes me sad to think that this many decades later, a pictorial representation of those same stereotypes is still deemed amusing by some.

I suppose I can take heart that more people seem able to identify the offensiveness today than would have back then. Better some progress than none, I guess.
