Thank you for the updates everyone. I'm sitting here in Austin sick to my stomach about the fires in what I consider my hometown. I was there for the Cedar fires and when I woke up to them four years ago, I thought the end of the world had come. I know these are much worse.

I am having a tough time focusing at work. One of my best friends and former next door neighbor is packed up and ready to evacuate with her dog. The home we moved out of in April is a canyon about 5-7 miles from the 15 and she is just waiting for the call. Meanwhile her husband is at Miramar (he's a marine) giving out assignments for his men to help with the fire. Another friend is holed up in the Escondido area with her 5 kids getting ready to evacuate, and another friend who works with Red Cross is directing a shelter. I am horribly worried about all of them even though I am in constant contact with them. :(

My son is trying to get out of Santa Barbara..does anyone know about road closures or anything that he should know? he THINKS he is driving to San Diego but he will never make it,so I told him to stay in any safe town on the coast.Hopefully he will make it to Orange County.

The only one I know is that part of the 15 is shut down. My friend just emailed me that her co-worker got a call that she may need to evacuate and her home is in Solana Beach. If that's the case, I can't imagine what will happen on the 5.

Air quality in my area is getting worse. I can smell smoke but at least what I see on the horizon is white, not brown-gray.

There is some good news. Discovery Hills neighborhood in San Marcos have been released from evacuation orders and may return home.

The Helen Woodward Animal Shelter is being evacuated.

Part of PCH is closed, but I don't think it's that far up into SB county. Last I heard the 101 is clear. If he takes PCH (or Rt. 1), he should be able to take 101 to the 405 (which is also clear. Now, the 5 in SD is a different story. There is fire on both sides of the 5.

Oh no! That place is amazing! I hope all (humans and those poor animals) get out of there alright. I think some of the ranches up here in LAguna Hills are taking in horses from SD or LA county. I've seen a few trailers heading up the 5.

I think they started about an hour ago. They are so well-run I have faith that they will get all human and animal life out of harms way.

OMG....this is just beyond horrible. In one respect, I'm glad there are people to try and put out the fires but on the other hand, I hate to see firefighters killed trying to fight it out with nature. It's a no win situation. God bless everyone involved.

I wonder if homeowner's insurance will pay for house and property damage from smoke or fire?

I can only imagine how locals are feeling. It has to be absolutely horrible.

I think most policies will cover the smoke and fire damage. Although in some areas they may have excluded both of those. They don't cover landslides, that I do know.

I hope everyone here is safe!

They are saying it may burn all the way to the coast in San Diego which is absoultely unheard of.
My sister said USD and UCSD and SDSU are all closed.

For all of our animal lovers...the Wild Animal park has evacuated it's employees to the San Diego Zoo. Also, they have more some critically endangered species into a fire resistant hospital center on the property. They are leaving the other animals to roam the 80+ acres. There are several ponds that the animals would seek refuge in, if need be. There is a fire break surrounding the park and key employees have returned to put out spot fires if necessary. The park believes that it is unlikely the fire will burn the park itself because of the type of vegetation in the enclosures and those grounds are heavily irrigated.

Thanks for the update Kris.
