Hurricane Dorian - August/September 2019 #1

Morning all!

I hope everyone is prepared to evacuate when it's the right, and safest time to leave.

We have been in constant contact with our daughter, son in law, and two little granddaughters who live in Mount Pleasant right outside of Charleston. Their home is very close to the ocean. They are boarding up their 2 story home, and will head down to our area in Georgia sometime today. They dont want to be caught in the bottle neck of trying to get out.

Yesterday here we had two severe thunderstorms with the wind tossing the tall trees back, and forth. A few limbs down. It's probably not due to Dorian, but still makes us nervous.

What is strange our precious little bundle of love, our fur baby, Tuxie, was never afraid of bad weather until hurricane Michael roared through here. Since then every time he hears thunder he wants to be held by me or his daddy. Its amazing how dogs feel the immense pressure on their ears from hurricanes.

Our oldest daughter, and family are also coming inland into Georgia.

Two of our best friends live close to Jekyll Island. They are worried they may lose their home this time if it skirts up the coast.

I am praying for all of my dear fellow posters who may affected. I pray all of you remain safe.

Imo, the worst thing about this monster is it's unpredictably. That alone has to cause so much emotional trauma for it is always the uncertainty of the unknown that is the worst, and causes so much stress, and worry.

Plus this one is so slow moving which is the worst scenario. It's like watching, and waiting for water to boil on the stove.

Remember your WS family is praying for you all, and deeply cares about your safety, and your families, friends, and fur babies.

I know when Michael was happening to us last year by following, and posting with my WS family it kept me grounded.

So make sure you all keep your cell phones charged. It may be your only communication you will have with us, and your loved ones.

Prepare for the worst, and pray for the best outcome.

Warm hugs are going out to all of you. Xxxx

Odd you should say that. Last night my dog was antsy, wanted out of the house, wanted to hide out in the car - and I'm up by Canada. He acted so weird I was almost tempted to evacuate the house.

Great post, but have to say.....Tuxie!! I love that name!

Yes, our little fur friends do feel the effects of the storms.

Take care, everyone. I'm watching from out of Dorian's path, but concerned for everyone. The Bahamas were hit hard.

Thank you PayrollNerd (so cute but what does your screen name mean?). I finally viewed Levi Cowan and he is outstanding. I cannot handle the weather channel at all. I do not need to provide fodder for my anxiety disorder from that station. This calmed me down some, lol. I have a brother and friends in Cape Canaveral area. I live about hour or so away from Jacksonville. My brother resides Cocoa Beach across from ocean in cement building but will be staying with friends in Palm Bay about 20 miles from ocean....eek in a trailer but they have small generator and another generator that could do 2 homes. He rode out both Hurricane Michael with no loss of electricity and Hurricane Irma with loss of electricity. Thank you again for this link flhurricane.com directly to Levi Cowan youtube.

Thank you to everyone for your input.
I’ve worked in the payroll industry for 20 years plus, I’m a volunteer instructor / tutor for those sitting for their Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) exam. The name fits me perfectly. LOL!

I lived on the east coast of FL for many years. I remember Hurricane David in 1979 bumping up the coast like Hurricane Dorian is going to do. The eye crossed over our house in Palm Bay at one point, we opened the front door and waved to the guy across the street. My prediction has been Cape Canaveral all along. However, this storm is so unpredictable, I can’t see how any prediction is going to be accurate.

Tropical Tidbits has a Facebook page you can follow. Levi gets on there and will post like he did this morning.

Many people are without adequate shelter as Hurricane Dorian's category 5 winds and rains caused "extensive damage" to the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, according to initial assessments from authorities and Red Cross officials on the ground.

As many as 13,000 homes have been severely damaged or destroyed, according to a statement from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and extensive flooding has created an "urgent need" for clean water as wells become contaminated with saltwater.

Those poor people. This is heartbreaking. I hope they can get ships in quickly with water and the “floating hospital” ship.

My 15 week old puppy has been right by my side!

After picking her up up north, she has quickly found out what Florida weather is all about...the summer heat and all the rain (especially this year) and now a hurricane!

She sounds adorable.

The rain Florida, and Georgia have already had this year will make it even worse in any flood area, due to the ground being water saturated already.

Praying for all in the path of Dorian. We were on vacation for the long Labor Day holiday and decided to cut our trip short due to Dorian. Spent all day driving yesterday and managed to get outside of the forecasted storm path. Stay safe everyone!

From all the NWS advisories, they're warning Florida to be prepared, esp. as Dorian c r e e p s slowly over the Bahamas. It seems like the tides from now on in FL could be affected by Dorian.

From the 8:00a.m. advisory: Hurricane Dorian Public Advisory

"STORM SURGE: A life-threatening storm surge will raise water levels
by as much as 18 to 23 feet above normal tide levels in areas of
onshore winds on Grand Bahama Island. Near the coast, the surge
will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. Water levels
should very slowly subside on the Abaco Islands during the day.

The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause
normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters
moving inland from the shoreline. The water could reach the
following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated
areas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...

Lantana to the Mouth of the St. Mary's River...4 to 7 ft
North of Deerfield Beach to Lantana...2 to 4 ft

The surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.
Surge-related flooding depends on the how close the center of
Dorian comes to the Florida east coast, and can vary greatly over
short distances. For information specific to your area, please see
products issued by your local National Weather Service forecast
office."

According to this site:
Jupiter Inlet Webcam

high tide at Jupiter Inlet, FL will be within the next half hour or so, around 11:35 a.m. There's also a live webcam so you can see how the tide is coming in.

WATCHES AND WARNINGS
--------------------
CHANGES WITH THIS ADVISORY:

The Storm Surge Warning has been extended northward along the
east coast of Florida to the Flagler/Volusia County Line.

The Storm Surge Watch has been extended northward along the Georgia
coast to the Savannah River.

The Hurricane Warning along the east coast of Florida has been
extended northward to the Flagler/Volusia County Line.

Georgia.

Please do not be fooled by the drop in category or wind speed! It is not the wind that kills, it is the water. The incoming tide and the storm surge are deadly.

Flhurricane.com

Hurricane Dorian is still sitting over Grand Bahamas island barely moving, and an eyewall replacement and land interaction has reduced it to 155mph winds (High end Cat 4). It's expected to remain a Major hurricane through Wednesday and the tropical storm force wind field likely will expand as it does.

The track has shifted slightly west closer to Florida, but landfall is not expected in Florida, however any slight deviation to the left when motion begins could bring stronger winds onshore. As it stands now based on the official tack, hurricane force winds will be felt along parts of the coast of Florida, even if landfall does not happen. Tropical Storm force winds could reach well inland. Note, most impacts would not be felt in central Florida until TOMORROW night. Although bands will gradually move onshore through today and tomorrow, from the south and spreading north.

The Hurricane Warning along the east coast of Florida has been extended northward to the Flagler/Volusia County Line.

The Hurricane Watch has been extended northward to Altamaha Sound Georgia.

Key Messages:

1. A prolonged period of catastrophic winds and storm surge will
continue to affect Grand Bahama Island through today and tonight.
Everyone there should remain in shelter and not venture into the
eye.

2. Life-threatening storm surge and dangerous hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the Florida east coast and Georgia coast, regardless of the exact track of Dorian's center. Water levels could begin to rise well in advance of the arrival of strong winds. Residents in these areas should follow advice given by local emergency officials.

3. The risk of life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds continues to increase along the coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina. Residents in these areas should follow advice given by local emergency officials.

4. Heavy rains, capable of producing life-threatening flash floods,
are expected over northern portions of the Bahamas and coastal
sections of the Southeast and lower Mid-Atlantic regions of the
United States into Friday.
