This person is my favorite Periscope person who shares live videos he takes when he travels to all the major hurricanes. Should be some good videos he will be sharing. I think he used to be a weatherman with a news station. He has lots of good equipment and is very knowledgeable.

Ever heard of lightning? You are a MUCH better conductor of electricity than a tree. That is why the lightning will jump from the tree to any person nearby for a fast final 5 or 6 feet to the ground.

Especially in flatland areas. Our most recent case, a young guy was struck by lightening on Siesta Key Beach and killed.

One of the reasons I do not like driving in rain and thunderstorm here in FL, that lightning more often than not can reach the ground in the distance - and if you are looking at it, it can blind you.

That's what happened during last night's storm here along the Suncoast, it was so freaky, like a strobe light, unbelievably strong light.

And I still wonder if this was a side effect of upcoming Florence.

Evacuations, states of emergency issued as Hurricane Florence approaches

That is the coolest thing I have ever seen in a long time. Wonder what is inside the tube. I dont see how it can be just air because wouldnt water make it float upwards if just air inside?

Maybe it is anchored to the ground really good. If it is anchored then air would probably work.

Just amazing. I like it. It does make you wonder if the water got higher about 1/2 way up it would it still do so well. EIther way it is better than nothing and I really like this thingamabob.

Water? I read about something like this a
awhile ago. Big reinforced fabric/polymer tubes you fill with a hose (from house or fire hydrant), to fight flooding with water. The tubes when empty are lighter than sandbags, likely still need a crew and flatbed truck to put in place, but MUCH quicker than an equlivent perimeter of sandbags. Watch out for pointy sharp floating things!

OT (Completely)

The good news is that the French have now developed a foaming Champagne that can be drunk in Zero-G (who knew that this was a problem - but I do want to see a Zero-G beer).

This was tested on a parabolic flight "vomit comet" aircraft that simulates Zero-G conditions, with good results. It makes a foam bubble you can slurp out of the air.

You've got to love a people who stick with the stuff that matters!

I agree. With webcams available, it's effective story-telling to make use of them rather than sending a crew into the dangerous conditions for live coverage. Times have changed - upgrade!

Where would the drama be then? Remember the old TV newsroom adage: "The bleeding head leads!" If these folks stand out in that wind long enough, Mother Nature may just oblige the Newsroom Editor!

It happened to a co-worker of mine who was cut badly, in the face while guiding clients to safety from an approaching tornado. His Security Company wrote him up for putting himself in harm's way. All he did was hold a door open.
