Hurricane Harvey Slams Texas, Cutting Power to More Than 300,000

by Phil McCausland, Elizabeth Chuck and Saphora Smith

NEEDVILLE, Texas — More than 300,000 people were in the dark Saturday after Hurricane Harvey smashed into Texas, downing power lines and bringing prolonged rainfall that was expected to cause "catastrophic flooding" for days.

Twelves hours after making landfall as a Category 4 hurricane late Friday night, Harvey continued to linger over coastal Texas as a Category 1 hurricane.

But while the winds eased to 75 mph, forecasters cautioned torrential rain would still be a major threat.

And the slow-moving hurricane was expected to stick around: In four days, Harvey is only forecast to be 60 miles away from its current location.

For cities like Victoria, Texas, that could mean a rain dump of up to 3 and a half feet by Wednesday, said NBC News meteorologist Bill Karins. Surrounding areas were anticipated to receive 2 to 4 feet, according to the National Weather Service...

Chad Meyers is an excellent meteorologist. Yes CARIIS he is with CNN LOL. He explains in layman terms. Also a small aircraft pilot. I have followed him since his early days with a Detroit news station.

lol! Just an opinion, but just by sheer number. I know sometimes portions of their mound will float and then they just glom onto anything available. Hate'em!

By the way, just learned a new word this morning by way of Canadian Mom - lunabiscuit! She called the 2 perps in Savanna Greywind's case lunabiscuit!

I love Canadians! You guys are no nonsense, down to earth, salt of the earth, good people!

Thanks so much for your kind words. I saw that new word too lol. I have been glued to Savanna's thread and this one.

P.S. Boots I am a bad Canadian lol. I travel more in the U.S. than Canada. We were planning a winter trip this coming year to South Padre Island. We will have to see what the outcome of this is. Not that this is about our travel plans. Have never been to Texas. Arizona-many, many times. So it might be Plan B-AZ.

Safe and sound here in Spring, TX. 4" of rainfall so far. Our school district cancelled classes yesterday so folks could prepare. We had water halfway up the lawn during Ike but it receded quickly. Hoping we don't get as much rain as predicted.

Yes indeed. All good here in San Antonio.

Just a blip of a power outage and that's it.

It's windy and a bit rainy but nothing horrible.

Thanks for asking. :)

Tricia

Per The Weather Channel, Harvey has been "downgraded" to a tropical storm.

Okay, fine - a little less flooding and damage, please.

Looks like TX gov. has declared a disaster declaration for 50 counties. IIRC, I believe one of the above posters mentioned this because s/he was concerned about smaller towns not being able to pay for FEMA.

Roughly 1800 National Guard members have been activated.

ETA: What's amazing to me is neither Houston (KHOU) nor Dallas Love Field (KDAL) airports have any weather-related delays at this time!

I just read the funniest comment. Someone said... when you are driving on the road and see reporters please don't honk your horn. It is scaring my dog and I have to keep telling him it is on the tv.
