The link below is the latest forecast for Marion and Alachua counties as reported by my local paper. Everything west of I-75 is expected to have hurricane force winds and 10-12 inches of rain. That'd be me. Joy! Fortunately we secured the boats with extra ties and even secured the little paddle boat that my nephews play on. I'm hopeful that the lake levels will rise and retain some of the water.

So far today it's just a blah, rainy day with occasional gusts. Walmart and most other stores closed at 5pm yesterday. The storm isn't supposed to start hitting with any force until late night/early morning. We're supposed to have 24 hours of sustained hurricane weather.

Of course, talk to my MIL in Jacksonville and according to her they started getting hit by Irma last night. When I suggested that was perhaps just a Florida storm in summer and not yet Irma I was quickly shut down. Talking to her today they are in the midst of Irma and it's the biggest, most worst storm ever. I honestly think she's delusional but I know she just needs attention. I have 12 pets that precedence. My prairie dogs and rats moved their burrows to lower ground starting days ago. They sensed something. Animal instinct is amazing.

It is/was a nor'easter but I wouldn't waste energy trying to convince anyone.

"A flash flood watch for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia is already in effect due to rain from a nor'easter."

Is your daughter aware of the free Wi-Fi Hot Spots that are available for Florida during this emergency? Maybe she can still get connected to the internet?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...ne-irma-comcast-free-wi-fi-florida/642682001/

Thanks, that will come in handy during the next few days! For now she and her family are staying safe in the house. She sent video of her back yard - windy but not horrible but will probably get stronger over time. I'm mostly worried about tornadoes.

I'm so glad she won't get the brunt of Irma but I hope those in its way will stay safe!

Extreme Wind Warnings for Collier County - GOLDEN GATE, MARCO ISLAND, NAPLES

until 3:30pm

Does the sea typically recede like this during hurricanes? I remember the 2004 tsunami in south-east Asia, many people died who didn't know they should be running in the opposite direction rather than staying on the beach. I didn't know either, but maybe this is usual in hurricane areas?

When the storm is large and strong it pulls out the water. Once the winds shift the water returns.

"Animal control officials in Palm Beach County are running into an alarming trend that's causing them to call it unprecedented 'animal cruelty'.

With Hurricane Irma making its way to Palm Beach County, animal control officers are rushing to rescue abandoned animals often left outside.

'They are left in a yard, in a pen they cannot escape from or tethered to trees or poles,'Director of Animal Care Diane Suave said to WPTV."

This breaks my heart thank you so much for the people trying to rescue. Please know I won't post any images of animals in distress.

I'm still praying for all the people and animals affected. I wish I could do more to help thousands of miles away than pray and donate to the Red Cross and animal charities in Florida. I'm thinking of you all.

In southwest Georgia where we are its been raining steadily since around 6:30 this morning and the wind is picking up. We still have power but we believe we will lose power in our area. We also have two children (daughter and our only son) and their families who lives in the same county as we do. We have made sure everyone all have enough supplies to last for at least 4-5 days. My hubby went out and delivered a generator to each of their homes yesterday.

This morning my hubby received a call from work at 4:30 am and they asked him would he be willing to deliver more medical gases somewhere near the Tallahassee area I think and so he is on the road again. So again we wait for him to return. I hope and pray they cut it off today because by Monday it could be much worse in our area or in the area of whatever Florida destination who may badly be in need of medical supplies.

Once this has passed though and it becomes an assistance needed mode I expect he will make several of these kind of emergency deliveries in the coming weeks along with all of the companies semi-truck drivers. Since he is the Safety and Training Officer he is required to have a current CDL at all times. Its times like this it comes in handy and he is very happy to help anyone in need.

Still continuing to pray for everyone who may be in the path of Irma. Thinking about all of you and praying for the best outcome for everyone involved. Hugs sent to you all.

:hugs:

I think it's pretty unusual, and is a measure of just how big and powerful Irma is. In short, Irma sucks.

While I agree it's utterly deplorable to abandon animals (especially tied up!), IMHO officials are partly to blame for having labeled some shelters as " No Pets"...(while in the crunch we now see they are saying get to any shelter, pets and all).

People finally facing the enormity of this, and faced with getting their children and spouses to safety may feel (in the confusion of panic mode) they have no alternative but to choose humans over pets.

The communication in this matter has been inconsistent and heart wrenchingly confusing.

Any sailor will tell you that, that is sucide. No material object is worth your life. Boat insurers m6st be freaking out right now. Florida probably has the largest boat population in the world.

He said there were other people also riding out on their boats so I'm hoping someone survives.

Hurricane Irma pummels Florida; at least 3 dead including sheriff's deputy
http://abcnews.go.com/US/hurricane-irma-close-landfall-florida-keys-dead-state/story?id=49738525

"Hurricane Irma is pummeling Florida with powerful winds and rain after making landfall in the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm this morning. The hurricane has left at least three people in the state dead, including a sheriff's deputy, and over 1 million households and businesses without power.

In Miami, winds whipped around high-rise buildings at speeds approaching 100 mph, the National Weather Service said. A 94 mph wind gust was recorded at Miami International Airport."

Agreed absolutely. It would be more helpful if the majority of shelters were pet friendly, with a few designated as pet-free for those with animal-related allergies.
