This disgusts me. They ought to be shot on sight. Absolutely disgusting. :furious:

I believe it may have been a reaction to a post about the President being on vacation when the poster thought he should have been in the White House at the time of the storm. The two mentioned seem to pop up and take charge whenever they can.
.........okay, that makes sense. They do have that annoying little habit, don't they? Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Yep, I agree. :furious: The mentality of the people doing these things is beyond me.

After seeing the looting on TV last night and again this morning and hearing the LA attorney general practically giving the green light on those looting for food, I wonder just how many of these people stayed behind for this purpose, instead of evacuating? Where did they all come from? Where were they during the storm? Were they let out of the Superdome?

When it gets out of hand and endangers the lives of the rescuers, it's time to put the order out, that looters will be shot on sight.

Yow, CNN is talking about how a hospital has no water and is prioritizing oxygen for patients (I think the nurse who reported this is an oncology nurse). The nurse went outside to get some fresh air and was robbed at gunpoint.

We can only hope that they will be weighed down, with all of the loot they stole, and will end up being floaters. Sorry about this harsh thought, but I don't have any sympathy for the looters. It's one thing to take food to feed your family, but that isn't what 99,9% of them are doing.

Just where are looters going to take their TVs and such??? I mean, where are they going to put their loot??? It's insane!! Are they just going to carry around TVs, radios, and stuff as they wade around in the water?

I had heard one reporter on Fox say that police officers staying at her same hotel told everyone in the hotel to evacuate and get out as soon as possible because they were emptying the jails and prisons and that the police would no longer be able to protect anyone there. She got in her SUV and got as many as she could in with her and went straight to the Houston Astrodome. So many of these looters are probably some of the jail inmates and prison inmates.

I just heard a report from the owner of Acadiana Ambulance (Lafayette). He said they sent in 20 ambulances to help evacuate patients. They just got an order for 100 babies to be pick up from Touro Hospital. They are attempting to remove 2000 people from hospitals in the area.

He said it was so dangerous and is urging the President to send in the military. One of his ambulances were turned over by looters. He is afraid for his employees and the patients they are trying to get out of there.

Some of the Army helicopters are too heavy and can't land on top of some
the hospitals. The streets are not safe...........

What on EARTH would they turn over an ambulance for????? Do they not know help when they see it???

I agree, We need the military NOW, not later.

I can't help but wonder if they were hoping to find drugs.

Truthfully, I hope they stop this before many innocent people get hurt or killed.

I have two theories.

1) For the medical supplies that can be used to make drugs.

or

2) Because they already feel so helpless and alone and angry and screwed, what's to lose?

The looting is infuriating. It feels like we’re all being raped. It’s also embarrassing to me as an American. I’ll admit that when I’ve watched tragedies like this in other countries and seen people stealing, I’ve felt kind smug. Yes...smug. Thinking that Americans would NEVER act like this. Reality check in progress.

Frick! They just said gas is over $3 a gallon here.

Someone asked whether other countries pitch in and help when the U.S. is in trouble. I found the following from Fox News:

VIENNA, Austria — From papal prayers to telegrams from China, the world reacted with an outpouring of compassion Wednesday for the victims of Hurricane Katrina (search) in messages tinged by shock that a disaster of this scale could occur in the United States.

Islamic extremists rejoiced in America's misfortune, giving the storm a military rank and declaring in Internet chatter that "Private" Katrina had joined the global jihad, or holy war. With "God's help," they declared, oil prices would hit $100 a barrel this year.

(much more at the website)

I've seen it too many times here to believe we're immune. It does make ya angry though. I'm with Buzz ... let 'em sink with their beloved bounty.

:banghead: Just like Fox news to turn a story about an outpouring of compassion and help into a story about a few Islamic extremists celebrating. Most of the world is with us, and they've got to focus on a few nutcases who aren't.

I stayed away from this topic yesterday because some people got so touchy about the talk about the looters when people were needing to be rescued. They felt we should not be concerned about the looting after all people need food no matter how they get it. Well I have been watching the video coming in from NO since this started and what I see makes me sick. The pain and suffering, people who have lost everything. But, the worst in people is also showing. I understand that the food is going to go bad, probably has by now. In a situation like this people have to do things they normally would not do to survive. I am referring to taking food from stores which obviously are closed. I am sure I would do the same if I were in their posistion. I also know that I would leave a note to the owner and would repay them when possible to do so. People taking food is not what upsets me. People taking, jewelry, TV's, stereo's and the like is NOT acceptable. I saw one lady kick in the glass door of a video store. I don't think videos are necessary for survival. This is not right people and no amount of justifying it will make it right. What about the owners of the businesses? How would you feel if it were your business? Wouldn't you hope to be able to salvage something? What Katrina didn't take from these poor people the criminals are. Yes, they are criminals, looting is a crime. It is theft.

It's the scale that gets to me - this seems worse than I've seen in other similar disasters. It's disgusting! I don't know if it's because so many are below the poverty line there - or is it the opposite - criminals are often below the poverty line and maybe they make up a lot of the poor in that city - or their theft and stealing from the businesses that might try to give jobs in that city makes more people there poor.

If those who stayed in their homes had gone to the dome - they ran out of room so they wouldn't have been able to get them all in anyway. I listened to Shep explain that the people outside the dome had been there for so long, no food or water, nobody instructing them. The state policewoman he was speaking to just kept saying help is on the way. Shep explained, very nicely I thought, they need some answers. It wasn't her fault but she had no answers. Everybody so frustrated.

There was just not enough of a plan in place. Each community needs to use this as an example of the need for contingency plans.
