Hurricane Katrina Disaster Updates

The looters are apparently stealing guns. They are saying there is a lot of gunfire in the city. The city and lake are at the same water level now.
Ok, when they get the pumps working who gets the water? Back to the lake? Pump it south? I imagine the swampy areas south of NO are waterlogged. I don't think the water is going away any time soon. The levees have been breached and it would take a lot to build them back up to hold any water pumped back in.

We have family friends who moved to Biloxi after he retired. The husbands parents were from there, and it had always been HIS dream to go back and live and get to know the relatives.

I just heard that all of the relatives (I'm not sure how many) lost their homes, autos, everything! Our friends fared much better, as their house is still standing. So everyone is living at their house.

I feel so sorry for all these poor people. So many of them have lived in these areas there entire life, and now it's come down to this.

I think one of the saddest news reports, was of a man and his wife who made it to the rooftop of their house, only to have the house split in half! The last words his wife said to him was take care of the children and grandchildren, and then she disappeared. Heartwrenching.

They just reported that yet another levee has broken.

Well, I suppose the lake and the "bowl" haven't found thier final levels then, or is this a levee on the Mississippi River? Those morning after party folks on Bourbon Street may yet be swimming to safety.

They said in the meantime , the water in New Orleans will rise and fall with the ride. Which is OK as long as there aren't any really high tides.

What a nightmare--all of those levees used to be dry on one side, now they are wet on both sides. They say the looters stole all of the guns and ammo from a Walmart; now there are armed gangs roaming around the city

And my daughter says the military isn't necessary!!!! I just need level headed perspective right now as I feel I am losing it.

I'm sorry, I didn't hear where the levee is located, only that it broke today and is the 3rd breach.

I don't understand, the evacuation is mandatory, yet CNN is interviewing people who refuse to leave their homes because of the looting. Why are these people not being forced out? Why are the looters not being forced out? It seems like the city should be nearly empty by now yet every video shows people walking through the steets.

I am afraid that this nightmare has just begun. The mob mentality is going to take over and more people will die. There are people refusing to leave the city to go to TX. What are they going to do with them? There are people roaming the streets with automatic weapons and they aren't the police. I'm afraid we ain't seen nothin yet.

They are looking at cholera, other pandemic diseases. It is beyond our scope. It is the worst thing to happen to the US.

A total of 21,000 National Guardsman will be there by the end of the week. They may have to send Special Forces into New Orleans to recapture the city.

That helps. I am so personally devastated that I don't think I am rational. All I do is cry.

Is anyone watching Dateline right now? I'm finding it very hard to feel an ounce of sympathy for the looters. And you know what else? While they were wading around and STEALING from people, they could have been in the Superdome waiting it out, rough as it was. But the good news is that now those people that toughed it out are getting bussed to Houston where they will have *some* comfort, at the very least, a dry, cool place where they can shower and use the restrooms. But that is only for those that were already in the superdome. So those azzholes that have been going around looting (guns, jewelry, electronics) are stuck in NO now, I guess. No electricity, water, phones, nothing. Karma?

I'm just glad that a poster (whose husband works on one of those oil rigs, I think) told us to fill up on gas right away. I'm glad that I listened to her. :)

Unfortunately, our tanks aren't that big and will need gas again.... soon!

I thought Martial Law was in effect in N. Orleans, but maybe not. Or maybe they just don't have the troops yet to enforce it. (Declaring such a thing is really, really rare in the U.S.)

IMO, that hasn't happened yet. It is truly unruly.

Floodwater
Floodwater often contains infectious
organisms, including intestinal bacteria such as
E. coli, Salmonella,
and Shigella; Hepatitis A

Virus; and agents of typhoid, paratyphoid and
tetanus. The signs and symptoms experienced
by the victims of waterborne microorganisms are
similar, even though they are caused by different
pathogens. These symptoms include nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, muscle
aches, and fever. Most cases of sickness
associated with flood conditions are brought
about by ingesting contaminated food or water.
Tetanus, however, can be acquired from
contaminated soil or water entering broken areas
of the skin, such as cuts, abrasions, or puncture
wounds. Tetanus is an infectious disease that
affects the nervous system and causes severe
muscle spasms, known as lockjaw. The
symptoms may appear weeks after exposure
and may begin as a headache, but later develop
into difficulty swallowing or opening the jaw.
Floodwaters also may be contaminated by
agricultural or industrial chemicals or by
hazardous agents present at flooded hazardous
waste sites. Flood cleanup crew members who
must work near flooded industrial sites also may
be exposed to chemically contaminated
floodwater. Although different chemicals cause
different health effects, the signs and symptoms
most frequently associated with chemical
poisoning are headaches, skin rashes, dizziness,
nausea, excitability, weakness, and fatigue.
Think of all of these people who are walking through this water with open cuts. There is no way for them to wash the water off. There will be outbreaks of disease.

This is one of my scenarios that I posted early on. It is crucial to get people out of the area.Health and well being are part and parcel. We can worry about what the politicians want after.

Just because they are AK-47's doesn't mean they are automatic, in fact I'm sure they are semi-auto's as Walmart doesn't sell full auto's. Full auto's are hard to get anyway, you'd have to pay a tax to get one, not even sure what the law is in NO but they may be illegal. Anyway, if the actual looters stole them, I hope they get shot. However, if people are grabbing guns to protect their belongings, I see no problem with that.

I can understand people going into the stores to get things needed to survive, but the ones taking flat screen TV's and DVD players should be shot. I haven't heard anything about people's homes getting looted in NO, but if they are looting homes, they should be shot as well.

This is why people stock up on ammo and guns for situations like this. They are on their own and have to defend themselves and their property. The cops can't help, National Guard doesn't have it under control yet. Everyone has to watch out for themselves because sadly , we have many "oppressed" looters that think this is a big party.

God bless all of those people, not only in NO, but AL, and MS as well.
