Hurricane Katrina to possibly become a Cat 4

Ok thank you mysteriew .... parish=county = what we call "shire", I think.

They live in Holden which is (on a map lol to the right of Baton Rogue)
Im trying to find their Parish, every place i go (web) i need to be a member or i end up at the wrong Holden.

Im thinking the Parish could be "Livingston"???? because it comes up Holden Livingston United States, on msn maps BUT when i sent them packages I didnt use Livingston in their address. So very confused here (as usual).

Holden doesnt even show on many maps.

Local news just showed a reporter in Biloxi, Mississippi and she said the winds have picked up and they are getting the bands of rain. Being further south, New Orleans would have started earlier.

Thanks for the link mysteriew and i had been reading all the posts in this thread for news in that area, some how I missed that page of posts.

I keep hearing/reading names of areas that will be badly effected then rushing to all my maps here checking on where they are in prox to Holden. My head is spinning, i'm starting to feel quiet sick.

Everything looks closer on these maps lol
PLUS i have to convert everything from miles to km's etc etc

My thoughts go out to all who will be effected by this.

I put in Holden, LA in maps.com and what they show is Livingston Co. which is east of Baton Rouge which is closer to New Orleans than Baton Rouge.

OK so is Livingston Co the Parish then ???????

That's what it looks like to me. I went to 411.com to search for a zip code for Holden and it still came up as Livingston so I'm guessing Holden is in Livingston Parrish/County.

It is going to be really bad, for all of those areas. This hurricane has already killed something like 7 before it picked up strength. But the main fear is New Orleans. That is because it is below sea level and lies between a large lake and the Mississippi River. They don't know if the levee's will hold, and they think the storm surges will bring the water over the levee's. It sounds like Holden is between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It is still very serious for your friends, but not as bad as New Orleans, as long as they are on high ground.

There were tornado warnings earlier. Yes, tornadoes happen with hurricanes. Especially relating to the outside bands of the storm, which are basically just severe thunderstorms, which is also, basically, what a hurricane is, a mass of severe thunderstorms rotating around a vortex, at first.

I just heard there is a plan(supposed) to blow the levees north of New Orleans, which would flood Monroeville, but take pressure off the lake and divert water from New Orleans. This, supposedely comes from someone in the Corp of Eng.. .mpi

A big thanks to everyone for their help, I was totally going around in circles here.

My friends dont live in the town Holden but Holden is the closest town to them. Where they live is lowlying and it floods easily PLUS they are always getting hit by tornados (shakes my head, I've told them so many times to MOVE, flooding, tornados and GATORS, sheeeesh).
I believe they are closer to New Orleans than they are Baton Rouge which is why i have been so worried.

YW. Try the webcams also. It is just getting light in Baton Rouge, so the view is getting somewhat better.
Some of the cams that worked last night, are now either not working at all, or are very dark. I suspect that they are losing power in some areas.

According to my local news the eyewall is just now hitting land. The eyewall is where the strongest winds are. So it hasn't hit NO yet.

Hurricane Katrina Makes Landfall in La.

Hurricane Katrina slammed ashore early Monday and charged toward this low-lying city with 150-mph winds and the threat of a catastrophic storm surge.

Katrina edged slightly to the east shortly before making landfall near Grand Isle, providing some hope that the worst of the storm's wrath might not be directed at the vulnerable city. Martin Nelson, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center, said the northern part of the eyewall came ashore at about 5 a.m. central time.

Katrina's fury was quickly felt at the Louisiana Superdome, normally home of professional football's Saints, which became the shelter of last resort Sunday for about 9,000 of the area's poor, homeless and frail.

Electrical power at the Superdome failed at 5:02 a.m., triggering groans from the crowd. Emergency generators kicked in, but the backup power runs only reduced lighting and is not strong enough to run the air conditioning.
