Maria, which had been a Category 5 hurricane – the highest classification – was at Category 4 when it hit Puerto Rico, packing winds of between 130 and 156 mph. It is, by measure of air pressure, the third-strongest storm to make landfall in the United States.

Maria’s pressure was 917 millibars, which is lower than Irma’s U.S. landfall of 929 millibars in the Florida Keys and Hurricane Katrina’s landfall of 920.

The strongest storm to ever hit the island was San Felipe in 1928 with winds of 160 mph.

The eye of Hurricane Maria is currently located west-southwest over San Juan as of 9 a.m Wednesday. Over the next 24 hours, Hurricane Maria's path is expected to track the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Hurricane warnings remain in place for Puerto Rico, Dominica, the Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos islands.

Early on Friday, Hurricane Maria is likely to reach the Turks and Caicos islands, brush the Bahamas and travel north into the Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricane Maria is not expected to make landfall on the U.S. mainland.

"Models continue to show Maria with a slow bend north towards Jose. Slight shifts to the west with the GFS/EURO in some. How fast high pressure builds after Jose leaves will decide if Maria is blocked a fast exit to sea. Top left images here show a high ahead in orange on latest GFS/EURO 500mb map. Ensemble maps here from*weathernerds.org*and*tropicaltidbits.com*and NOAA show EURO/GFS/UK/CMC. More go out to sea but enough close to mainland that NC north needs to continue watching. I will go live at 9am eastern to chat out loud.*www.spaghettimodels.com*/ Mikes Weather Page APP"

Aerial Footage Of Dominica Captures The Destruction Of Hurricane Maria -

A top adviser in Dominica said at least 7 people had been killed as a direct result of the hurricane. Authorities fear the death toll will rise as they move into rural areas later Wednesday.

There was a “tremendous loss” of housing and public buildings, while the general hospital also “took a beating."

Many buildings serving as shelters lost roofs, which means that a very urgent need now is tarpaulins and other roofing materials. Little contact has been made with the outer communities but persons who walked 10 and 15 miles towards the city of Roseau from various outer districts report total destruction of homes, some roadways and crops.

The country was “in a daze” with no electricity, running water or cellphone service

Hurricane Maria has inflicted a devastating blow to Puerto Rico’s already damaged region, with as much as 90 percent of the island now without electricity. Even before the storm, more than 70,000 Puerto Ricans were without power after Hurricane Irma sideswiped the island.

Most cell towers and other forms of communications are also down, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said via landline phone. “We should expect that at some point we will lose 100 percent communication.”

Emergency managers had been able to communicate with people on the island of Culebra via radio and satellite communications.

So far, there’s been no word from the island of Vieques.

Storm surge is estimated at between five to seven feet, and waves topping 20 feet have hit the shore.

6:00 am GFS model showed a shift west with these two shots showing the closest points of landfall next Wednesday. We will see if this is the beginning of a trend of a possible landfall.

It all depends on Jose's strength to keep the two high ridges from merging. Frankly, I think a move West is in the cards. IMO. Watching...

I went to Windy.com and long range has Maria skirting the coast with winds on the outside of the hurricane hitting the Outer Banks in NC by Tuesday, the Norfolk, VA and Ocean City, MD area on Wednesday, just barely touching the New Jersey coast on Thursday, then moving out to sea but staying on path along the coast up through Nova Scotia on Friday.

Here is the progression starting on 9/25 (Monday):

Yep...that's the midnight EURO model. We will see if they all trend further West in the next versions.

11:53 p.m.: Twitter and Facebook is filling with posts and images of the destruction in Dominica from Maria.

Anita Duenas, in Fort Myers, has been texting her cousin Sonia Pérez, who lives in a neighborhood of San Juan called Hato Rey. “My poor cousin is in the 12th floor of a bldg in PR right now. She said she can feel it moving. They’re saying they’ll have to spend the whole day waiting for it to pass. So scary,” she posted. “About four hours ago she felt the building rocking back and forth and the winds howling. She is saying that it’s been many hours in the high winds and one expects almost anything to happen from hour to hour. She is feeling mentally drained.”

let's hope she doesn't intensify after PR, but reports say she will build up strength again.

Some people in Culebra were complaining that they did not wanted to leave their boat houses, it's like WTF, a Hurricane is coming right for us, move!!

The winds are starting and sounds horrible outside. I'm locked down in my room with my dog, with all the windows closed.

I'll keep you guys updated, as long as the power and internet signal allows me to.

:waiting: for you! :heartbeat: :prayers:
