On the Weather Channel Governor Scott says Mexico Beach and Tyndall AFB are hardest hit.

Stephanie Abrams and her crew, escorted by police, were unable to reach Mexico Beach.

Tears fill my eyes as I am watching the devastation of this monstrous storm...and on the heels of another that has barely passed.

Hurricane season is not over yet either...

Thanks, CARIIS, I was able to catch some of the footage.

Utter devastation. This reminds me of Hurricane Fran in 1996. Homes that used to be fourth row back are now beachfront. God help anyone who did not evacuate a home that was on the beach side of Highway 98.

In the beginning of each season a lot of the stuff shoots off Africa. Around this time of the season they tend to come from the area Michael

But here are the waves coming off Africa now

Meteosat Airmass product, focussing on any waves coming off the African coasts. These waves have the potential to develop into hurricanes.

So if winds were sustained at 155, how high were the gusts!

I think they will change the history books. WIth Andrew when they went through all the data they changed their info -- he was a five. It's actually kinda neat - they go back and go through projectiles and stuff.

It is a lot like an aviation accident investigation.

IIRC the guy who developed the tornado scale was involved in the Andrew reconstruction.

I have no idea but i don't understand why when they rebuild the power grids why they dont use different poles . These are from what the 50's - why not put in metal or specially treated poles or whatever your know what I mean .

Deeper holes?

A little crazy glue in the hole!

Something

Run like a ski lodge cable across the top of the actual power lines so when tree falls maybe it does not take down miles of power transmission lines ?

At the end of the day everything comes back to money - but it sure seems like in the long run the money will be worth it

just babbling

dreamed some of this last night!!

I heard they compared this storm to a sustained cat 2 tornado as it made landfall.

Also, one of the reasons that Michael went from a cat 1 or 2 storm that many did not worry about, to a cat 5 monster so fast is that the gulf waters are 4-6 degrees warmer than usual for this time of year, in October.

Hoping to hear from everyone in its path. It doesn't get much more terrifying.

Rtbm:

Here's what I don't understand. Why don't they purposefully shut off the power grid before the transformers blow and live power lines are down in water?

Cariis, I imagine so much of the vulnerability of the power grid, and the poles is about the high water table, and low land elevation. What are you going to anchor it to? And the age of these power lines? Same with the houses, not anchored, water rises, and the wind just washes them away.

We saw this in Puerto Rico, how an ancient insufficient power infrastructure added a year of devastation to this vulnerable island.

The before pictures you posted really gives perspective. What a beautiful town Mexico Beach was. A beautiful place and way of life. This is a gorgeous part of the country.

I realized after hurricane Sandy, here, looking at the change in topography of the NJ and NY shorelines just how risky it is to build and live in these vulnerable places. And it took a long time to rebuild.

Thank you so much. All of this is going to happen when it's dark here.

To say the least it's going to be very long night.

Our local forecaster said it will be unsafe to go outside until around 5am tomorrow. Curfew is in place in my county at 7 pm. Downed trees are already happening per WALB.
How are you, oceanblueeyes?

My 90 year old uncle moved from Georgia to Panacea FL a number of years ago for the fishing. He has a house on stilts on a canal. I emailed him yesterday and haven’t heard back, so I’m hoping he and his wife evacuated to one of his kids’ homes in Georgia (not safe either).

A lot of people in Panacea are too poor to leave according to this article yesterday.
As Hurricane Michael bears down, many along Gulf Coast remain in harm’s way

Hi Lilibet, just checking in, any updates on your uncle and his wife?

Mags <3 Do you remember the wildfires and mudslides thread? And when our IQ lost her home? Oh my, this has me feeling that same anxiety waiting for everyone to post.

(Yes indeed I do. I checked in with @IQuestion recently and she was doing ok.)

I feel like a voyeur watching storm coverage on TV. I switch back & forth from CNN to The Weather Channel. It truly amazes me that these reporters put themselves in harm's way to cover a storm for those of who aren't experiencing it.

To anyone here who is in Michael's path, be safe and well.

Well, as an adrenaline junkie...I used to do stupid stuff like stand on piers during a hurricane playing chicken (the first to bail loses).
So my guess is it’s likely a rush for them. I know it is/was for me.

However I will say I quit doing STUPID things like that when the last time I opened the door to walk outside and a roof shingle whizzed by a hundred miles an hour like a frisbee and almost took my head right off. Not kidding. It would have been instant decapitation).

Jim Cantore cracks me up! I can’t believe he’s still out the dancing in storms (well actually I can haha)

Not sure if the video of him saving the other reporter has been posted?
