All Baytown, Mont Belvieu and Chambers County residents are now under mandatory evacuation orders to escape the wrath of Hurricane Rita.

Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive issued a stern warning to potential storm holdouts.

"Don't be the stubborn old ornery fool that stays around," LaRive said. "I don't want to have to come out and pick up your body."

Criminy. The Houston Chronicle at www.houstonchronicle.com has just put the path right up through Freeport, Texas.

That was the initial path about 2 days ago, but the projections wabbled. Now, they're back to Freeport.

Prayers.

Could be, but there aren't any guarantees about where Rita will make landfall at this point in time.

All I know is is that we are expecting 100 mph winds and I have NO idea what that is like!!!!! Having children makes this thing so much different and more scary......they are hoping for a day off of school, which I will pull them when the storm comes in........lord knows the school district will keep them till the last minute!

Category Five Hurricane:
Winds greater than 155 mph
(135 kt or 249 km/hr). Storm surge generally greater than 18 ft above normal. Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away. All shrubs, trees, and signs blown down. Complete destruction of mobile homes. Severe and extensive window and door damage. Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Major damage to lower floors of all structures located less than 15 ft above sea level and within 500 yards of the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas on low ground within 5-10 miles (8-16 km) of the shoreline may be required. Only 3 Category Five Hurricanes have made landfall in the United States since records began: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, Hurricane Camille (1969), and Hurricane Andrew in August, 1992. The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane struck the Florida Keys with a minimum pressure of 892 mb--the lowest pressure ever observed in the United States. Hurricane Camille struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast causing a 25-foot storm surge, which inundated Pass Christian. Hurricane Andrew of 1992 made landfall over southern Miami-Dade County, Florida causing 26.5 billion dollars in losses--the costliest hurricane on record. In addition, Hurricane Gilbert of 1988 was a Category Five hurricane at peak intensity and is the strongest Atlantic tropical cyclone on record with a minimum pressure of 888 mb.

Size Comparison

KATRINA
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND 105 MILES FROM THE CENTER...
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 230 MILES.
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...923 MB. (at landfall) 902 MB (at its lowest)

RITA
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND 70 MILES FROM THE CENTER
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 185 MILES.
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...898 MB.
This is the 3rd lowest pressure on record-- Gilbert 888 MB, 1935 LABOR DAY 892 MB

The record low central pressure ever, for a hurricane IN the U.S., is 892 MB (the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane).

RITA WILL BE CROSSING AN AREA OF HIGH HEAT CONTENT DURING THE NEXT 12 TO 24 HOURS...IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE HURRICANE WILL MAINTAIN ITS STRENGTH.

Rita has the time, and perfect conditions, to continue growing.

ADDITIONAL EXPANSION OF THE WIND FIELD IS ANTICIPATED...A HURRICANE WATCH AND A TROPICAL STORM WATCH HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR THE NORTHWEST GULF COAST.

I would like to make a suggestion. Why don't you start a thread- In the Path of the Hurricane- and list the areas your homes are in, and if you are there or have moved to a safe area. Also if you have family or friends that are remaining in the path. As others sign on in the am, maybe they will also report in. And the rest of us will know who to worry about, LOL. If you all are comfortable with that, that is.

From Accuweather.com:
Today's Discussion Posted: September 22, 2005 2:09 a.m.

Rita is an historic category 5 hurricane now packing sustained winds
of 175 mph with gusts to near a mind boggling 215 mph. This is the season's second catastrophic hurricane. As of 2:00 AM EDT, Rita was centered near 24.8 north and 87.6 west. This places Rita 645 miles east-southeast of Corpus Christi, or 540 miles east-southeast of Galveston, Texas. The minimum central pressure was reported by hurricane hunter aircraft at 898 millibars (26.52 inches of mercury). This is the 3rd most intense Atlantic basin hurricane ever recorded. Rita was moving to the west-northwest at 9 mph. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles, and tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles from the center of circulation. Given that Rita will continue to intensify the wind field will probably expand further over the next 24 hours.

Be sure that you listen to the news...They are closing down some of the roads leading INTO Houston to make way for traffic going OUT of Houston.

They showed the outgoing traffic on the news and it was already backed up. They have to open all lanes to outgoing traffic, especially on the main highways.

They say it is the Perfect Storm!

Does anyone know if there are any oil platforms or refineries that might be demolished by this storm? Might really start to affect the economy above and beyond the price of gas if these facilities are put out of commission.

ExxonMobil...the biggest refinery in the United States. They process over 600 thousand barrels of oil every day. It is located in Baytown, Texas. They will be closing down until the storm passes. Grab you checkbook. Gas will be sky high for a while.

The news is *guesstimating* $5.00 per gallon! Maybe $3.00 per doesn't look so bad after all. :waitasec:
