The kind of serial rapist or killer who stalks his prey opportunistically is very good at knowing where cameras are, and avoiding them. They're very good at knowing the kinds of places where they will find the kind of prey they want and the kinds of places that will suit their needs.

It's not a big step to think that in a small town on a hot summer day, a park might be a good place to find kids who aren't being closely supervised. It wouldn't take much scouting on his part to identify that place where the path disappears into the trees, and know he could wait there undetected. Maybe he sits there eating his lunch or something. If nobody showed up, fine, he's not out anything. He tries again another time. Or he gets lucky and gets two for one.

Do I think this is what happened? No, it's not very likely. But I don't see any evidence to rule it out, either.

You're right, there isn't any evidence to rule it out, in fact we don't have much evidence of any kind. :banghead:

The hallmark of this crime is planning.

No one has yet been able to explain how the "random" just so happened to know two little girls would cycle into his trap, only minutes after he laid it?

If he'd followed them either routinely or on that day, two things had to have happened

1. he would have been caught on cctv
2, he would be pursuing them, not waiting for them.

This perp was like a spider waiting for a fly.

I don't think I recall any perp ever who just set up kidnapping shop in some random, quite out of the way place and expected something he wanted would just walk into it, all unseen, in the middle of town, within 5 minutes.

If perp lived very close to Meyers Lake, as in almost on the lake, how would he be caught on cctv.

The perp may have seen the girls entering the bike trail on many occasions, then planned the abduction and murder when he thought the time was right, i.e. if he had neighbours, he knew when they were working or when they would be on vacation.

For those of you who feel the bikes were staged, what would the perp accomplish by doing that? To mislead LE into thinking the girls had drowned in the lake, or to mislead LE into believing the girls had been taken from the park?

Just curious . . .

The river is very high now, I had to walk thru large areas of ankle deep water to get to the crime site.

Let's see if I can phrase this so it doesn't sound like I'm trying to implicate any individual -- it's a category of person.

I think somebody staged bikes, purse, and timeline to create the impression the girls were stranger-abducted from the park.

Thanks for your answer. I have felt until recently that the girls biked to the lake and left their bikes where they were found.

But I'm starting to pay more attention to the staging theory.

I think there is a possibility the bikes could have been staged Marilyn.

I believe the reason for the (possible) staging could have been to keep LE, family, volunteers and any other individuals involved in the search, off the roadways and mainly focused in the park and the surrounding area, to avoid detection while transporting the girls and the likelihood of being stopped by LE would be lessened.

WOW! So it does get very high!!! If somebody dumped a body now, it certainly would be carried far away. The current looks swift and dangerous! Cindersoot, I am glad you are okay! We should let AmandaReckonwith know about the pictures.

I have thought about the purse being left behind too. I just get the feeling that IF they were taken from the lake that they had put the purse down while playing, and were called away from the water into the enclosed area. Then things happened so fast they didn't have time to go back...OR were ordered to not go back for the purse.

My point in the purse left behind was simply that there was (reportedly) no OBVIOUS sign of struggle...like the strap on the purse being broken, or the purses contents ransacked.

I don't know WHY the purse was taken along for the ride in the first place...I hated carrying things on my bike...it just slowed me down. So it makes me wonder if there was something in the contents that could be a clue.

On the other hand, I can easily see it being left unattended, or even left behind in just typical 8 year old behavior. It could very easily have been used just to have a clock on hand to check the time if they were told what time they needed to be back.

Is it possible the purse was left behind because the perp(s) knew there was a cell phone in it and they feared they could be tracked/pinged/located per the cell phone??
If so, how many people knew Elizabeth had a cell phone in her purse I wonder?

That's certainly a highly plausible scenario, and probably more likely than the staging. Staging with two bikes requires some effort and definitely increases the risk. But if somebody close to the girls (not meaning parents!) was targeting them, it might be worth directing attention away from the immediate family/friends/neighbors circle.

Actually what they found was a piece of pvc pipe. Now I'm not an expert, but I would think orbit were real, it would have done more than go "pft" when they detonated it.
