Well, sometimes girls that age get very attached to their personal possessions, especially if having a purse and a phone (even if it wasn't good for phone calls) signified being grown up to her.
But on the whole I agree with you that it doesn't feel right and it's one of the many things that make me lean toward staging.
That's how I feel too...it's one of those little things that I wish they would elaborate on (unless they felt it would harm the investigation).
Even a statement such as:
"Elizabeth would not leave that purse behind unless she was unable to get back to it, or was instructed to leave it...she carried very important things (to her) in there. She was very protective of it's contents and we feel there is relevance in the fact it was left behind."
OR
"We don't read too much into the purse being left behind - that purse held nothing of real value, it was more for fun than anything. The fact it was left behind probably means she was simply distracted and forgot she even had it there...it's been known to be laid down and forgotten before."
Not that it really gives any clues, or leads in any specific direction as to who did it...but we could maybe get a feel from the family as to how THEY view the purse being left at the scene.
