Well, from the little snippet I watched last night on KWWL news last night, they stated that Smock was NOT, and had never been, leading the investigation. Mike Roehrkasse is who Ron Steele stated had been lead on the case.

I also got the strange vibe from Mike Roehrkasse (in his interview) that this didn't appear to be much of a loss. That is how I read it anyway. He just shrugged his shoulders and said "It won't even really be a hiccup for us."
Maybe he was just being PC about the whole thing, but I at least would have expected him to say something like "While Chief Smock was a major contributor to this case and his insight and expertise will be greatly missed, our investigation will continue until we bring those responsible to justice" or SOMETHING demonstrating that while unfortunate, they will move on.
He didn't put out that vibe AT ALL to me. He just acted like it was no big deal, that it wasn't a loss whatsoever. THAT bothers me. He should have been a huge asset of knowledge, dedication, and information. IMO, Mike Roehrkasse gave the impression of the complete opposite. To say "It won't even really be a hiccup for us" doesn't make me feel he was a huge contributor.
Or maybe he just said that to wane off anyone thinking this WAS going to somehow slow down the investigation or cause an issue. Maybe that's his way of saying "don't panic people...we have PLENTY of people who are still investigating this just as we were yesterday"...and just had a bad choice of words to express that.
"No hiccup" implies (to me) that Smock being gone is no loss whatsoever. But again...I could be totally reading his words wrong from their intent.
