10/11/24 Update: Defense attorney Jill Eimermann wants Judge to toss out information that she was pregnant at the time of her death or had been recently pregnant. Arguing the information is irrelevant or would be prejudicial in the first-degree murder trial of Louisma. But the prosecution argued the information was relevant & could show a motive for why Louisma killed Melody Hoffman, who died by strangulation. During the hearing, 6th Judicial District Judge Chad Kepros went over a motion in limine — facts or circumstances of the case — the defense wants to keep out of Louisma’s trial. Jill Eimermann argued the pregnancy is irrelevant and, “even if deemed to have some relevance, its probative value is outweighed by the danger of unfair prejudice.” She also argued the fact that Hoffman was “low-functioning” was irrelevant to the elements of the crimes. It would be more prejudicial to Louisma and invoke emotion from the jury. Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks argued Hoffman’s pregnancy is a potential motive, along with the fact that Louisma was in a relationship with another woman at the same time he was involved with Hoffman. Judge Kepros said he would take the motion under advisement and provide a written ruling before trial. Jury selection for Louisma’s trial will start on 10/31/24, with testimony starting 11/4/24.

Melody, true to her name, loved all kinds of music. Melody enjoyed her time at Liberty High School and Kirkwood Community College, where she met many good friends. She loved swimming, camping, concerts, and being involved in scouting. She volunteered at the Linn County Animal Shelter and looked forward to volunteering more. Her love for animals ran deep. Every chance she had to donate blood she took it. She loved to hear about the impact her donation made. She was the most loving and caring person who would help anyone. She knew no strangers, had no fear, and loved everyone unconditionally. She immensely loved and cherished her cousins, whom she held close to her heart.
