This type of thing has happened in the past and LE simply says that “we will not charge you for anything we discover that is unrelated to the Mollie Tibbetts case.” Usually this type of tactic involves car trunks during road block searches.
It's also something a lawyer could quietly arrange for you. If you have relevant information that could help solve a crime like this, no DA is going to risk losing that information to get a misdemeanor possession arrest or something else like that. DAs have prosecutorial discretion.
