Just had a thought on Open Carry vs. CCW. I have to agree with Nova on this one. Although with Open Carry I'd be intimidated, I'd have the choice to leave Starbucks/Walmart, etc. when I saw their gun. With CCW, I'd be lulled into a false sense of security that there were no guns in public, when in reality, I'd be in far more danger and wouldn't have that informed choice to leave the place.

You're assuming that a permit is required to conceal and carry a weapon. I'd bet anything that there are concealed weapons on people who don't have the CCW permit, and they're usually the bad people.

Of course criminals will do what they do. I would just rather they don't have lethal weapons when they are doing their thing?.. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't anybody?

As a female the vast majority of criminals could just as easily use their fists, or a bat, or a knife, etc.... Getting beaten to death by an attacker scares me a lot more than the risk of being shot by one.

Men are on average over 3 times as strong as women. The vast majority of women cannot effectively defend themselves or their loved ones against male attackers using knifes or sticks. As a woman firearms truly are the "great equalizer".

Course I do have dogs, including a large aggressive dog, but I would NEVER intentionally put him in a situation where he could be killed by attackers/criminals, it is my job to keep him from harm.

Nope! NEVER. We have other measures for security- a large dog, knives, baseball bat, and outside lighting. I will never own a gun, nor will my husband have one in my presence. I have the local police programmed into my cell phone.
And I have had my apartment broken into previously.

No one is forcing you to get one, but you're not taking mine away. win win.

It all seems so circular to me. People don't want regulations partly because of a perceived disadvantage against a criminal with a gun. Lack of (effective) regulations make it easier for a criminal to get a gun. And then this increases people's perception they need a gun for defence. Surely America, with all it's intelligence, can find a way to stop so many guns falling into the wrong hands. I'm going to put my tin foil hat on for a moment and suggest that an industry that sells 50% of the worlds guns to 5% of the worlds population doesn't care whose hands they're in.

We have prisons, high walls topped with barbed wire and gun toting guards and spot lights at night. And believe it or not, the prisoners are sill able to procure drugs. If we can't keep drugs out of our prisons, how can you keep guns from being brought into any country?

So it's not paranoia, irrational fear, or phobia to want to be prepared for an attack. Otherwise, no one would need large dogs, knives, baseball bats, outside lighting, or the police programmed into their cell phone. And excuse me, but I believe many people die each year from dogs, knives and baseball bats. It's not like you don't have deadly weapons in your home already.

I too have a large dog (plus a medium dog and a small dog), knives and outside lighting. (No baseball bats, or police programmed into my cell phone, though.) But if someone comes through the door in the middle of the night, it'll be my gun I reach for first. Dial 911 while keeping gun trained on bedroom door. The cops'll be along in 15 or 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, my large main dog will be ripping out their throat*, unless she gets killed or hurt too badly. If they make it past her and get to the bedroom, I won't be throwing my phone at them, and I won't let them get close enough for either of us to use a knife or a baseball bat.

* Yeah, I happen to know that about my large main dog. We had a friend who was scheduled to spend the night, who arrived past midnight, long after he was expected. He tried to sneak into the house so as not to wake us. He almost got his throat ripped out. This man has known our dog since she was a pup, and he had spent the night with us just a few days previously. But my smart girl wasn't about to let anyone sneak into the house in the middle of the night, even someone she knows. Good girl!

Oh, wait.... when the police come, won't they have guns? Will you be asking the police dispatcher to send police without guns, because you have to keep your home gun-free?

Yep, what happens when someone without a gun gets attacked? They call.... men with guns!

So now you are mocking people for not wanting guns in their presence? Nice.

I'm pointing out that when they get attacked, they generally call men with guns.

ETA: LinasK has made it very clear that she insists on keeping her home gun-free -- to the extent that she gave her husband an ultimatum, her or his guns. But if she should have need to call the police, they would no doubt arrive with guns. What then?

I am not speaking for LinasK but I have yet to hear anyone say they do not want police using guns when it is necessary to protect themselves or other citizens from immediate danger.

bbm Right, just like Officer Wilson did.

Not speaking for LinasK either, just quoting her:

NOPE! NEVER in my household!!! I've had my apartment robbed and I'm a molestation victim. Still refuse to have a gun in my presence.

Anyway, the main problem with relying on police is that I can't carry one around with me, nor keep one in my nightstand. They have about a 15- to 20-minute response time in my area. Waaaaay too much can happen in 15 to 20 minutes for me to consider them my first line of defense.

Guns beget guns.

The more guns around, the more guns you need to arm yourself in case one of the other guns is used against you and on and on it goes.

I almost agree with that. I would make one small change:

The more violent thugs around, the more guns you need to arm yourself.

Yup, that is the cycle I spoke of upstream. The answer to violence will never be more violence. The cycle will keep on repeating until that mindset changes.

"Look at all the thugs with guns!" ... "I better get myself a gun too!"... And on and on it goes...

Sometimes, the only answer to violence is more violence.

If a 🤬🤬🤬🤬 breaks into my home intent on rape or murder (with or without a firearm), I'm not interested in discussing his miserable childhood. I'm interesting in stopping him, as quickly and as effectively as possible.

I understand what you are saying. I am not saying I feel safer without a gun. I am saying I feel safer in a nation with relatively, very few guns.

So didn't you say earlier that you respect someone's right to decline to own a gun or to not want to keep one in their home as long as they aren't trying to take YOURS away from you? Or was it someone else? Because these baiting posts really belie the earlier statement.
