This is an updated version of my "follow the money" activity for the period around February when Lori cleaned out the house and bank account. The material is relevant as it pertains to motive. It also supplements and corrects information in the Websleuth timeline. I have omitted specific names and addresses which are not pertinent or would not be TOS-compliant. If a mod wants further detail for any reason they can message me.

Business:

Charles and Lori controlled a business entity registered in the state of Texas in 2010. Its legal address was a law firm in Austin. Its business license has lapsed.

This entity conducted business under a variety of names over the years. During the period of interest it operated under the name "R.I.T.E. Planning Group." It had a (now defunct) website www.riteplanninggroup.com and email addresses. The website states that it did business in California, Texas, and Hawaii. It evidently had a bank account separate from the couple's personal accounts.

R.I.T.E Planning Group was engaged in the selling of annuities. Annuities are a complex and somewhat controversial financial instrument akin to life insurance. Charles was probably a "Managing General Agent" for the annuity company, which meant he ran a number of lower-level agents and was entitled to a cut of their commissions. One of these lower-level agents was identified indirectly by MSM and is legitimate. The agent is located in California, where Charles had a license to sell insurance. The nature of the Hawaii state web site prevented me from searching for business information about operations there.

The company Charles sold for has an on-line commission FAQ that describes how commissions were spread over time: 3/4 immediately, 1/8 after a year, and the final 1/8 after two years. Commissions were large, and there is no mention of a salary or "draw" to level out the income of salespeople. Charles listed his income on his divorce petition as $20,000 per month.

Nothing I have turned up so far indicates that R.I.T.E. Planning Group was anything other than a legitimate financial services company.

Houses:

This is the area where the official timeline for this site needs updating. Between February 2017 and July 2019 the Vallow family lived in four residences, which I will call Chandler House 1, the Gilbert House, the Houston House, and Chandler House 2.

Chandler House 1 was their residence from February 2017 to January 2019. It was a spacious 5 bedroom house with a large landscaped yard and swimming pool. It was rented for $4,000 per month.

The Gilbert House was then rented from January to April 2019. This is the house where Lori deserted Charles, took his things, and locked him out. The house was less spacious and well appointed than the Chandler House but still had 6 bedrooms and a pool. It rented for $3,000 per month.

The Houston House is where Charles and JJ moved in April 2019 and where Lori and Tylee joined them. It had 5 bedrooms and rented for $4,500 per month. The rental period ended in July 2019.

Chandler House 2 is where Charles was shot. It was a 4 bedroom house whose rental history is not available, as it was rented to Charles by a friend of his in late June or early July 2019.

There is no evidence that the family possessed furniture to any extent so the assumption is that the houses were rented furnished, with the exception of Chandler House 2, which was shown to be basically empty in the police lapel camera footage.

Cars:

Silver or white Ford F-150 Pickup, license unknown. This is the truck that Lori took from the airport, leaving Charles to get to the Gilbert House on his own. Disposition of this vehicle is unknown. It is likely that this vehicle carried Texas plates (see below.)

Black Infiniti Qx80 SUV, Texas license unknown. This appears to have been Lori's primary vehicle in Arizona. This is the vehicle that Lori said she was driving when interviewed by the Gilbert police on 31 January 2019, and which was parked in the garage of Chandler House 2 at the time of the shooting. Lapel camera footage and testimony from the shooting verify the Texas registration and presence at Chandler House 2. Disposition of this vehicle is unknown.

Dark colored Jeep Wrangler, Texas license LWD0997 (variously described as Dark Grey, Green, or Black). Purchased used in January 2019. This vehicle has been described as "Tylee's Jeep." Date of movement to Arizona unknown. Presence at Chandler House 2 at the time of the shooting probable but not verified. This vehicle was implicated in the October 2019 shooting attempt on Brandon Boudreaux and was later driven to Rexburg and impounded by police there under a search warrant.

It is possible that all three vehicles were leased by the Texas business entity owned by the Vallows and were not the personal property of individuals.

Overall Impression:

The remarkable thing about this family is their lack of visible assets. Nothing like home equity, mutual fund accounts, or income property seems to have surfaced in all this time, despite a stated yearly income of $240,000.

Very good work! And yes, it's amazing how they ended up with zip assets despite the high income. Nice cars, cellphones and data for everyone, high rent... but not a stick of furniture. I think Lori got some in ID tho, abandoned upon her sudden eloping to Kauai? Oh and lots of hair products for Lolo no doubt.

AC: and then he's, he's coming back at me and he's still got the bat and I'm like 'what are you doing?'
O: And where are you at?
AC: we're in the living room, and then I turned around and he hit me in the back of the head with the bat. So I went to my room and got my gun, cause I always carry it,
[...]
AC: I just went back in the living room I went 'what is your problem?'
O: With the gun in your hand
AC: Yes! And I said I want you to put that bat down and he wouldn't do it, he was like, and he came at me with the bat again, after he'd already hit me in the head, so I shot him to stop him.
O: Okay then what happened?
AC: That was it.

Just clipping this down to the core of his story.

If there is a police officer anywhere who believes Alex is telling the truth here, they are in the wrong job.

He has made the liar's classic mistake of forgetting to choreograph Charles' movements in his story. Charles hits him with the bat. Continuing in the same tone, he gives no description of the moment of injury, almost as if it didn't happen. Raging Charles who put Alex in fear for his life stays where he is, simply freezing long enough for Alex to leave the room, and get his gun. Alex returns with gun in hand and Charles just springs back to life, going at Alex again even though he can see he now has a gun.

He also waits to tell the officer Charles hit him until he's been questioned for many minutes, as if he hasn't quite worked out how to say it convincingly. That suggests to me nerves about the big lie.

moo

Yes, and Lori did the same (failed to account for Charles' movements). Lori claims a struggle with Charles over the bat (a struggle in which Lori claims to have feared serious injury against herself and Tylee, motivating Lori to urge Tylee to leave and go to the car with JJ) and then Charles apparently freezes in place while first Tylee leaves the house and later Lori also leaves the house and departs in the car Charles arrived in to take JJ to school.

In what strange universe would that make sense - Charles standing aside and remaining there at the house with Alex as Lori departs in his rental car and with his phone? Lori had already left Charles without a vehicle several months before (taking his pickup from its parking spot at the airport as he was flying back home on a ticket he'd been forced to purchase because Lori had cancelled the one he already had), how likely is it Charles (or any sane person in those circumstances) is going to stand aside while Lori relieves him of his car (and also his phone) again? And what is the point of taking his phone? Charles arrives to take JJ and is somehow relieved of his phone? How does that work?

Also, there is an inconsistency between Lori's version of events and Alex's. Alex has Lori driving away before the "Charles came at me with the bat, so I went into the bedroom I was using to get my gun and I shot him in self-defense" sequence of events. If that were the case, then when Lori left, Charles was still alive. How would Lori know the catastrophic turn of events that had taken place after her departure unless either she and Alex had planned the shooting of Charles in advance, or Alex had contacted her AFTER the shooting to report what he'd done BEFORE he called any emergency services - thus leaving Charles without medical assistance as Alex chatted on the phone with Lori. Yet, Lori and Tylee arrive back at the house and their behavior does not comport with that of two people who are learning for the first time that Alex has been injured and Charles has been shot. Lori seems completely at ease (eager, even) approaching to talk with police - she needs to be asked to step back to her car and wait her turn to be interviewed - and Tylee seems nervous. Neither of them appears at all shocked. Lori appeared as though she wanted to be present and directing what was said by others involved, much as she did with MG during the January police report about Lori's stolen purse/phone and the events that followed.

Frankly, if such a serious fight was going on that Lori and Tylee had to leave to keep themselves safe, it MAKES NO SENSE that Lori did not call police for assistance the moment she had departed. She goes into the station to report her purse/phone were taken by her estranged husband, but she opts to avoid the police when there is a violent fight involving that man and her brother at her home? Not buying it.

IMO, Charles Vallow walked into an ambush that morning; the theft of his phone and vehicle and the fatal shooting were all planned in advance and all three of those interviewed lied about it. Tylee may not have been in on the planning, but she was at least recruited and complied as part of the coverup. It seems Lori had no problem poisoning Tylee’s impressions of her biological father, Joseph Anthony Ryan, Jr., and I have no doubt she did the same with Tylee’s impressions of the man who’d served as her father in the many years he’d been married to her mother. Lori probably made it seem honorable for Tylee to lie to support her mother against Charles. God only knows at this point what Lori told Tylee about Charles.

I'm guessing the events that morning went something like this: Lori and Alex devise a plan to kill Charles and make the murder look like a self-defensive act after a violent altercation occurs that is seriously endangering all parties present except JJ. Alex stays overnight at Lori's house even though he lives only 20 minutes away, so he will be present when Charles arrives to pick up JJ for school so Alex and Lori can carry out the plan.

Charles knocks on the door after he arrives to pick up JJ for school. Lori asks him inside, so he can collect JJ's rescue dog, Bailey, and put the dog into his car while she helps JJ collect his backpack. Charles sets his phone down somewhere as he leashes and leads out the dog, with the intention of grabbing his phone again when he comes back in after putting the dog in the car.

When Charles comes back in to retrieve his phone, he is immediately threatened by a lethally-armed Alex and either Lori or Alex shouts, "Get the hell out of here!" to JJ and Tylee who BOTH go out to Charles's rental car. (The shouted words together with what he has just witnessed leaves a strong impression upon JJ, who later fixates upon and repeats those words in front of his young townhouse friend in Rexburg and perhaps also in front of the nanny who is hired for only one time and who "witnesses JJ in meltdown.") Alex shoots a defenseless Charles multiple times, as he and Lori had planned, and Lori goes out to Charles's rental car and departs with Tylee, JJ, and JJ's dog, Bailey. Alex causes some damage to the back of his own head to lend some credence to his claim he shot Charles in self-defense and then he calls the police to report the shooting. Perhaps he even calls Lori just before to let her know when he is preparing to call 911.

It would be very interesting to know whether JJ did attend school that day or whether he was delivered somewhere else - such as to a friend Lori trusts. And if JJ did attend school that day or soon after, it would be very interesting to know what he said while there. Perhaps Lori's later claim to the school that Charles had committed suicide was to make what others at the school had heard coming out of JJ's mouth make sense without having those words sound incriminating about her. I strongly believe that the reason JJ was disappeared and is likely no longer alive is because Lori and Alex had reason to fear JJ would convincingly disclose what he had seen and heard to others who would not simply write off what he said as the irrational ramblings of an autistic child but would instead recognize his words as witness testimony about a premeditated murder. The fact that JJ could no longer speak to the Woodcock’s without obvious monitoring and coaching, and even then, only a very short time, evidenced Lori and Alex’s fears about his disclosures.

Tylee was likely held hostage by the lies she knows she told to police to protect her mother and her uncle. JJ was a loose cannon and the likelihood he would unwittingly disclose the truths that threatened all of them – Lori, Alex, AND Tylee – for the roles they played in the murder and concealment of it, probably were ripping her apart inside. She was torn between the mother she loved and with whom she shared a very sickening co-dependent relationship and the brother she loved, who was innocent in everything that had happened and who needed a better mother than Lori was, and found that in Tylee.

I don’t know what happened to Tylee, but I think she was dying inside long before she suffered whatever fate Lori, Alex, and Chad chose for her. And, Tylee’s dying inside was all her mother’s fault. Lori had not prepared Tylee for life, as good mothers do; she had groomed her exclusively for service to Lori, regardless of consequences to Tylee’s life.

Lori is not a god; she’s nearly as far from God as a human being can be.

This is all MOO.

Oh, I see. Thanks. So maybe his excuse is valid afterall.

Just wanted to add:

It was reported that the jail mistakenly recorded a conversation between Lori and her attorney... which (upon discovery) they immediately deleted.

However, I'm unsure how this mistake occurred, nor who discovered it, nor how it was relayed to others (particularly Means).

CONTRADICTIONS - RE. ALEX BEING HIT WITH BAT BY CHARLES
...
Sorry, piling on...

One of the many things that bothers me about July 11 is the end of the 911 call with Alex as he is allegedly on the floor next to CV doing chest compressions. There is a brief overlap with the bodycam footage of the officer outside and the 911 call where we see/hear Alex leave the house. He has no blood on him despite having just had his hands on the chest of a man with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

I don't believe he ever did any chest compressions, but the reason this bothers me is we know Alex goes outside immediately, he doesn't go to the sink and wash his hands and then go out. Yet there was blood in the kitchen sink. Who's blood? How did it get in the sink? We don't know for sure when shots were fired but likely within a few minutes of 8:00 a.m. if we believe Lori's and/or Tylee's account that they were still there and heard the gun shots*. So Alex has half an hour or more to wash up? Maybe make himself an omelet? What is he doing in the 30 to 40 minutes before he calls 911?

*Tylee says she heard a loud noise. Singular. In her account it isn't clear if Lori is still in the house when she hears the loud noise.

So many questions but I'll limit myself to 2.
1) We know one of the reasons LV wanted his phone was to see what he had been texting/emailing to AdC. What was CV's relationship like with AxC, AdC, and the rest of the Cs? I imagine filing for divorce from their sister strained things.
2) Why was he there on July 11? I get that he wants to be with JJ and maybe TR, but I have read he flew in from Texas the night before and was picking up JJ to take him to school. Was CV planning to stay a few days to spend time with JJ? Was he still trying to reconcile with LV in July? Did he fly in just to have the 15 minutes with JJ to drive him to school and then he was going to fly back to Texas? I recall reading it was not unusual for him to drive JJ to school. That seems odd given that he lives in a different state.

On the Vinnie Politan show ....one of the panel brought up the question - could CV of been lured there?

Been watching Ozark on Netflix... Seems similar, except exchange the cartels for religion. Almost every episode someone gets zapped.

I guess one big difference would be that Chad voluntarily surrendered his "you know what's" to Lori, while in Ozark, the stud had his cut out by the cartel against his will.

Oh, I see. Thanks. So maybe his excuse is valid afterall.
My feeling is that every lawyer of every defendant waiting in jail for trial etc will have the same excuse. You can’t let them all out and especially her as she has not yet complied with said order.... also they don’t have any cases in her jail of Covid 19. Also with her being a translated being it won’t touch her anyways. So she is safe and sound just where she belongs JMO

Yeah... he knew of her threats to him and that her brother... whose truck was parked there... was hanging out. She may have insisted instead of meeting in a public place, recommended for hot heads. He then allows her to get his phone? Doesn't make sense, that part. I am sure they had it planned out and too bad he took the bait.

I also noticed it seemed as though he hesitated at a few of the officer’s questions and then either the officer asked another, answered it for him or AxC changed the subject. JMO

Normally yes, but I read that the Idaho facility where LV is being held has begun conducting all meetings either by phone or in a public room due to covid sanitation concerns.

I thought that because there is no visitation during covid 19 restrictions that they can use the regular visitation room with no recordings happening. Alone.

Sorry for the spoiler!

Don't f#@ with Ruth.

It’s very possible that none of the above happened. They may have sent the kids out and then immediately shot Charles then took his phone. Just speculation.

The remarkable thing about this family is their lack of visible assets. Nothing like home equity, mutual fund accounts, or income property seems to have surfaced in all this time, despite a stated yearly income of $240,000.
RSBM

I find the lack of assets remarkable too. I just wonder what can any of us really know about CV's accounts? It seems certain to me he had a checking account and likely he had stocks, bonds, mutual funds, an IRA, probably some annuities given his business, etc. Can we say for sure he didn't have those? Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence and all that.

Another Q: Someone filed a claim against his estate in probate court in Texas. Was that filing related to R.I.T.E. Planning Group? Or could CV have been involved in another business?

ETA: And thank you DI_Isokawa. Nice work!

Great work DI_Isokawa, Helps tremendously!

Just wanted to add:

It was reported that the jail mistakenly recorded a conversation between Lori and her attorney... which (upon discovery) they immediately deleted.

However, I'm unsure how this mistake occurred, nor who discovered it, nor how it was relayed to others (particularly Means).
So, we've heard that the normal atty/client private rooms are cancelled due to 19. So, this particular jail, and likely many many others across the USA, have them meet via the family chat rooms, where you sit across a desk with a glass partition to prevent contraband and (viruses). I heard that the phones, once you pick up, have a pre recording saying "This call is being recorded for quality assurance" ha ha something to that effect. So they knew before they started talking. Means probably asked about it, afterwards. He thought he found his pot of gold. *NAH*

Been watching Ozark on Netflix... Seems similar, except exchange the cartels for religion. Almost every episode someone gets zapped.

Or “Bloodline”....that’s all about murder & lies! Very familiar IMO.
