This is an updated version of my "follow the money" activity for the period around February when Lori cleaned out the house and bank account. The material is relevant as it pertains to motive. It also supplements and corrects information in the Websleuth timeline. I have omitted specific names and addresses which are not pertinent or would not be TOS-compliant. If a mod wants further detail for any reason they can message me.
Business:
Charles and Lori controlled a business entity registered in the state of Texas in 2010. Its legal address was a law firm in Austin. Its business license has lapsed.
This entity conducted business under a variety of names over the years. During the period of interest it operated under the name "R.I.T.E. Planning Group." It had a (now defunct) website www.riteplanninggroup.com and email addresses. The website states that it did business in California, Texas, and Hawaii. It evidently had a bank account separate from the couple's personal accounts.
R.I.T.E Planning Group was engaged in the selling of annuities. Annuities are a complex and somewhat controversial financial instrument akin to life insurance. Charles was probably a "Managing General Agent" for the annuity company, which meant he ran a number of lower-level agents and was entitled to a cut of their commissions. One of these lower-level agents was identified indirectly by MSM and is legitimate. The agent is located in California, where Charles had a license to sell insurance. The nature of the Hawaii state web site prevented me from searching for business information about operations there.
The company Charles sold for has an on-line commission FAQ that describes how commissions were spread over time: 3/4 immediately, 1/8 after a year, and the final 1/8 after two years. Commissions were large, and there is no mention of a salary or "draw" to level out the income of salespeople. Charles listed his income on his divorce petition as $20,000 per month.
Nothing I have turned up so far indicates that R.I.T.E. Planning Group was anything other than a legitimate financial services company.
Houses:
This is the area where the official timeline for this site needs updating. Between February 2017 and July 2019 the Vallow family lived in four residences, which I will call Chandler House 1, the Gilbert House, the Houston House, and Chandler House 2.
Chandler House 1 was their residence from February 2017 to January 2019. It was a spacious 5 bedroom house with a large landscaped yard and swimming pool. It was rented for $4,000 per month.
The Gilbert House was then rented from January to April 2019. This is the house where Lori deserted Charles, took his things, and locked him out. The house was less spacious and well appointed than the Chandler House but still had 6 bedrooms and a pool. It rented for $3,000 per month.
The Houston House is where Charles and JJ moved in April 2019 and where Lori and Tylee joined them. It had 5 bedrooms and rented for $4,500 per month. The rental period ended in July 2019.
Chandler House 2 is where Charles was shot. It was a 4 bedroom house whose rental history is not available, as it was rented to Charles by a friend of his in late June or early July 2019.
There is no evidence that the family possessed furniture to any extent so the assumption is that the houses were rented furnished, with the exception of Chandler House 2, which was shown to be basically empty in the police lapel camera footage.
Cars:
Silver or white Ford F-150 Pickup, license unknown. This is the truck that Lori took from the airport, leaving Charles to get to the Gilbert House on his own. Disposition of this vehicle is unknown. It is likely that this vehicle carried Texas plates (see below.)
Black Infiniti Qx80 SUV, Texas license unknown. This appears to have been Lori's primary vehicle in Arizona. This is the vehicle that Lori said she was driving when interviewed by the Gilbert police on 31 January 2019, and which was parked in the garage of Chandler House 2 at the time of the shooting. Lapel camera footage and testimony from the shooting verify the Texas registration and presence at Chandler House 2. Disposition of this vehicle is unknown.
Dark colored Jeep Wrangler, Texas license LWD0997 (variously described as Dark Grey, Green, or Black). Purchased used in January 2019. This vehicle has been described as "Tylee's Jeep." Date of movement to Arizona unknown. Presence at Chandler House 2 at the time of the shooting probable but not verified. This vehicle was implicated in the October 2019 shooting attempt on Brandon Boudreaux and was later driven to Rexburg and impounded by police there under a search warrant.
It is possible that all three vehicles were leased by the Texas business entity owned by the Vallows and were not the personal property of individuals.
Overall Impression:
The remarkable thing about this family is their lack of visible assets. Nothing like home equity, mutual fund accounts, or income property seems to have surfaced in all this time, despite a stated yearly income of $240,000.
