GUILTY IL - Antinette 'Toni' Keller, 18, DeKalb, NIU Student, 14 October 2010

This case has me scratching my head.:waitasec: On one hand, I want to think it isn't somebody she knew because when I think about her acquaintances I think of fellow college students. I just have a difficult time imagining a student doing this. It just seems like a very cold person who would do something like this, like somebody who didn't know her would be able to do something this horrible to her. Another thought is since the perp left her clothing wouldn't there be DNA evidence on it. That just seems very careless to me if somebody would take the time to burn a body to almost nothing. This is just a very bizarre case since it would be so easy to just burn or take the clothes and simply throw them away.

#268 mentions a comment no foul play suspected in comments by PC on the 18th...any link?

I haven't found any articles that mention Feithen saying that there is no indication of foul play. I did find a 10/18/10 article that attributes the comment to a member of the NIU police:

There are apparently no signs of foul play in the disappearance of a student at Northern Illinois University. …
NIU police tell ABC7 they don't have any indication of foul play but it doesn't appear that Toni, as her friends know her, ran away, either.

#278 brings up an issue I can't resolve. Dogs used many times...Can they detect burnt bones? I would say the scent is diff from an article of clothing.

From a Cadaver Dog website:

Burned remains detection is an advanced skill. Dogs that have not been properly trained to detect the specific odor of burned remains can completely miss a burned corpse or bones. A properly trained HRD dog can very quickly determine if a body is present in a burned structure, and can also help define a more specific search area within the debris. CSS currently has two dog teams that are proficient in locating burned remains and have actual field experience in this area. http://bit.ly/aSRNcu

#321 talked about burnt remains id.. My questions is how does the skull and teeth get that decomposed in a day. I know crematoriums use a crusher after ~1700F heat. Gasoline is lower temp if I rem. So what bothers me is the Dalmer case. Do we think all body parts are there?

I have worried that everything may not be there. Particularly because the when the remains were gathered they 1) weren't sure they were relevant and 2) they were sent out of staate for identification. Articles mention that collection and handling methods of these types of remains is critical.

Joe Friday posted a link to a fascinating article yesterday about work being done at the Body Farm in TN http://bit.ly/4aBEj .

One comment I found interesting, it also applies to your thought about discounting the homeless as perpetrators in this case

“It is sometimes assumed that, outside of professional cremations, if a body or body parts have been completely destroyed by fire then a flammable liquid must have been used - potentially turning an accidental fire into a murder scene. In fact, a variety of everyday materials can generate extreme temperatures.”

I read an excellent review article recently that I have not yet been able to relocate online. It included info on varying times and temperatures and had 4 recognized categories of what medical examiner/ forensic anthropologists are faced with in dealing with degree of fire on bodies; the term “human remains” referred to the worst/ most damaged category.

SFSBM (Snipped For Space By Me)

This work is actually being done by a lady from the University of West Florida in Pensacola. I think she received some of the corpses that have been burned in the past from the people in Tennessee.

One other thing I found interesting in that article is the description of the smell of a human body when it is burned that is quoted below.

http://www.sott.net/articles/show/185067-Body-burners-The-forensics-of-fire

"There's a complete range, from 'it smells just like barbequing pork ribs', to 'it is the most revolting odour and it stays with you forever'." DeHaan suspects that it is decaying bodies that smell worse when they burn, although he hasn't tested this theory.

Although the theory is not tested, he thinks that a decaying body smells the worse when they burn. Since we know Antinette would not have been decaying per se when she was burned, the smell might not have been what one would expect. If some describe the smell as that of barbecuing pork this might explain why no one in the park might have thought anything about a smell, if they had smelled a fire that night or day that Antinette went missing. Thinking it was just a camper cooking up some ribs.

My cell auto uploads the pictures to my friends photo bucket. She is making it public. I am not sure what is the most helpful. I don't think pic spamming 50 photos without contest is the best either. Suggestions appreciated.

I met two Angela Lansbury types and we worked together determining the credible bonfire site where the police worked and exact river search areas. Niu students in pairs were out. Police are conducting random drives along the park, but not in the park. .

Facts.

#1 The park is now 100% open to the public. It was released today.

#2 The area where the searches the river is lined with footprints. Rem, it did not rain until Oct 23 and we had over 2 weeks prior w no rain.

#3 Green location tape is used all through the upper east west trail. Don't read into these. It helps people find there way out.

#4 There are at least seven bonfire sites north of the river, south of the trail. I took photos of them.

Rumor Intelligence (do not chase these, but keep in back of mind, I have had no contact with LE so these are speculations until confirmed. )

1. Fire reported by resident. Prairie Park area, in woods, unknown location on Oct. 14 ~ 4pm.

Observations.
1. These bonfire sites are known drinking places etc. Fires are not going to be huge as pictures will show eventually. They will all be covered by leaves in a few days making them invisible.

2. There is no outside confirmations of nearly 97% of the facts. I don't want to go in depth more because I have seen certain military operations that trigger this.

3. Noise is about 90 dBA when a train goes by. The center bonfires are not visible from the paved upper path. Noise is not very loud other than a train.

4. The photo is bonfire #2. I suggest that it is the most probable location. Evidence of LE is strong. the view is looking NW approx 100 south of the path. This is my estimation only. Visibility to anyone on the path is non existent.

Most people will find bonfire #1 site and think that it is the location. This is worth discussing further.

I'm mystified as to why Antinette is receiving so little air time on Chicago local news. A 30sec spot recruiting students to hand out fliers, that's all I saw. She has been missing since last Thursday, noon. Unless LE believes her to be alive they should have cadaver dogs out by now. MOO mho

Antinette recently graduated from high school in June of this year and went missing from Northern U. in DeKalb. Sure hope there's more on this beautiful girl at 10p. moo mho

I'm surprised too! I'm local as well and have seen just short clips on the news. I came here to find out what's up. Seems like in Illinois, if you go missing, you're on your own so to speak. Crazy.

I have heard this as well from credible sources in town and have been trying to confirm and or disprove this rumor with contacts in LE and the FD.

Thank you so much NoD !

So the path is not visible from bonfire site #2 ? Hmmmm- you have given me a much better idea of what the area is like.

I was surprised that you actually found the remnants of 7 bonfires.

Could you describe the type bonfire sites you saw ? What is your best guess as to what is used as fuel in these locations ? Are the sites like the remnants of burned piles of underbrush (as opposed to logs) ? Site #2 looks like just scorched ground. It is that cloudy curved patch with few leaves, right ? The thin tree stump is not part of it, is it ? Do they all look like that or do you think that is because LE removed everything conceivable ?

I think LE removed everything in bonfire 2 including tree parts as shown. The sawd tree is a tree that was there for maybe 5 years. You can see that cut tree in other views of bonfire 2. There is not much scorching of the trees unlike my many early bonfires. So the fire would not be visible. Now the issues of a fuel source is an issue. World War II might suggest another issue too.

Most the of the bonfires are clear as all but bonfire 2. The phrase "leave no trace" from scouts comes to mind.

I hope it works with this link. Janet let me load to her album. I did not take photos of bonfire 6 and 7 as I wanted to conserve my depleting battery.

And it's getting even quieter. I heard advertisements for Northern's upcoming open house. The Thursday Toni disappeared was just before homecoming weekend. Maybe the bad publicity of a freshman student being found burned to the point of 'no identification' would send a few future students running. moo mho

Plainfield Patch 10/19/10 http://bit.ly/aRmGVN

Smith said his department has been investigating leads from people who believe they've seen Keller or someone matching her description, but so far none have panned out. In addition to family and friends, they spoke with a former boyfriend who does not attend Northern but "found no evidence of any animosity," Smith said.

So now there are 2 ex-boyfriends: this one, from Plainfield, that does not go to NIU and the Disney message board posters' son's friend who does go to NIU.

.I also was informed that there has been a burned body of a possible 4 year old in Malta discovered in the last couple of days...I myself have seen more police officials in those two areas......

I cannot find info on this on the internet, but a NIU student name Donna DAhl(Sp?) was found dead in a field on nelson road which is S of NIU in the mid 70's. I believe it was never solved.

Thanks so much for taking all the time to take pictures and carefully label each one. I know we here at WS sure do appreciate the locals who do this kind of thing for us. Very valuable information. :blowkiss:

My daughter had friends who attended NIU so she would go to their parties when in town. I would go with a neighbor who had 2 children attending, we would bring care packages. :) I can't remember if the exit to NIU on I88 is Annie Gliddin Road? Is that the main exit and is there an exit going W and E called AnnieGR? TIA

The main exit is indeed called Annie Glidden Road, however it runs north and south.

The closest exit to campus is indeed Annie Glidden Rd...The alternative exit is called Peace Rd.

Jumping into this thread, and I have a few questions:

Is this a city community, or are there homes in the area?
And, am I getting this correct, she left on the 14th, afternoon, and the bones were found on the 16th?

Earlier in this thread, there was a post wherein a young man was reportedly making repeated/numerous trips between the park and the dorms(??) on the night of Antinette's disappearance.

I have looked several times for this post in order to understand what was being said, and if that post might have held a clue or three.

Does anyone else recall reading this post, and if so, do you recall where/when it was made? Is anyone else willing to take a gander to see if they can find the post and then bring it forward for current discussion?

For some reason, when I read that post, it gave me a very sick feeling inside. I have not been able to get it out of my mind since then.
