GUILTY IL - Antinette 'Toni' Keller, 18, DeKalb, NIU Student, 14 October 2010

Perhaps items of interest would be clothing or camera that is easily identifiable? Also, she had a unique tattoo.
Hope the perp is found soon....

At times like this you just ask why and get no answers. Dekalb was my home away from home for years. I just pray that her family has the strength to get through this horrifying time and whoever did this pays. You never expect something like this to hit so close. :(

This is very troubling.....R.I.P. Toni.....With sympathy and prayers to her family and friends.

If the remains have been there for some time I wonder if it is Brad Olsen. He went missing nearby the same location in 2007.

one of the online articles worded it like this after the presser:

They have apparently been in the park for some time, perhaps since shortly after Keller’s disappearance, police said.

I guess "some time" means more than 24-48 hours, or is just an obfuscation by LE....maybe it means 1 week, but sounds like they estimate around the time of her disappearance, IMO.

Just so freaking sad.

I just heard a reporter say that they found Toni's remains (CBS). So very sad. My heart goes out to her family.

Me too Soul125. My boyfriend (now husband) said to me "I'm going to marry you and take you to Thailand" while standing in Prairie Park. It's hard to fathom that all these years later something like this has happened there.

I pray they find whoever did this and fry him.

Seems very strategic to have a press conference at 9pm Saturday and not give media time to get there. I'm sure the #1 priority is to provide a sense of safety and to protect the students on campus. Hard to do with a media extravaganza. After all, they have no idea who committed this horrible crime, he could be anywhere. moo

They eliminated most media, the trucks, and strangers that would be coming on campus this Saturday night. Good for the LE at NIU. moo

Just a question....did they say a "death investigation" or "homicide investigation?" I'm assuming its a homicide investigation....but I guess it could be something less sinister.

everything I've read said "reclassified as a death investigation" haven't watched the presser vid yet.

maybe LE doesn't know yet...but NIU did follow up the presser to mention security protocols & "taking steps to heighten safety and security measures".

ETA:

NIU officials increase campus safety precautions

Brad Hoey, team leader of media relations and internal communications, said NIU has raised campus safety precautions due to the change in status of the investigation.

"The university is taking some steps to heighten safety and security measures," Hoey said.
Brian Hemphill, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management, is urging those on foot to be careful around the campus and DeKalb area by walking in groups of three or more, according to an NIU release.

NIU Police have increased their presence around campus, the release said. As of Saturday, Late Night Ride services have been extended and will now run from 4 p.m to 8 a.m. The hours were originally from 10 p.m to 6 a.m.

Not sure if I am allowed to post things from other discussion boards or not but I noticed this on a Disney travel board that I visit frequently, It is a thread started by a mother of someone from Toni's dorm and I saw some info that I hadn't seen discussed here. If it shouldn't be posted here let me know and I will delete it. Here it is: Girl from DS's dorm missing - The DIS Discussion Forums - DISboards.com . Praying for her family and friends during this horrible time.

The Police Officer is not revealing anything during the Press Conference.
It's hard to watch because the tape pauses with a circle thingy going round and round. I realized he wasn't going to tell details so I quit watching.

Then I got to thinking that they said yesterday that the park had been thoroughly searched already. They found the body today. Could it be possible that her body was brought back to the park after someone killed her? It seems odd that it took this long and that the body had been overlooked for many days. We'll have to wait to find out more as the investigation continues.

Now everybody, parents and students alike, will be on edge and the whole campus will suffer. I sure hope they can get to the bottom of this crime quickly.

That's what I was thinking also. I realize things can be missed, but this isn't a huge park. They said in the news that they searched several times, but I realize we are only human and not perfect. I am not criticizing LE or any of the searchers. It just seems odd.

I guess we don't really know if this was a homicide or not...I've not heard the term "death investigation" used for obvious homicides. May just have to wait to see what they determine.

In any case, it is a horrible tragedy and sounds as though whatever occurred, happened very soon after she was missing.

I am so sad to hear the news, I wonder when and if they will share cause of death. How big is the park? Is it crowded during the day? Any prior incidences in the park? Any news on the ex boyfriend? Does he go to school at NIU too? How can she be found a week after they started searched for her in the park? Didn't they use dogs. I can't believe someone would do this, just heartbreaking. Prayers out to her family and friends. They must be devasted.

I have been to the park a few times years ago. The park is roughly 150 acres. It is somewhat deserted during the day. Here is a photo of the park bridge.
I am not aware of any park incidents in the past. I did think it was odd that they searched with dogs, but they didn't find her right away. But we don't have all the info yet either.
