BBM

It states "they were in the park in areas that were searched..." It could be just the reporter's own interpretation rather than the exact words of LE.

But, it made me wonder if LE had found a bone or two early in the search maybe in different areas and that they have finally found enough bones to confirm it was human ? It could be that the body had been dismembered and maybe they have only found some of the bones? Are there any animals up there big enough to scatter or carry off the bones?
Well, there have been a lot of coyotes lately in the general vicinity.

Does anyone know offhand when local LE were brought into this case? What I mean is does anyone know when campus security finally notified Law Enforcement of Toni missing?

Has it been reported that it is 100% sure that this is Antinette's body that was found? I can't find an article stating that this is Antinette.

there are some rumors that they found a shovel and may be connected on the facebook page tonight, ive never heard this before.
i think your right the next press conference will be a lot of worse. i'm thinking the same thing about remains vs. body because if they had her body why couldnt they positively id it on the scene, like its a girl, etc. but only can through dental records. my worry is that this perp is still loose and in the the week time she was missing, the perp has the opportunity to grab another student or something. i'm glad no other student is missing but its very scary.

If they found remains, not a body, it could be very well due to animal activity.

From reading the Facebook postings, it seems that the keys were found right away, not the body....and the cops knew that the keys were the full recent set, not the older lost key.

Regarding a predator on the loose, it's possible, but it's also possible that a fellow student followed her from the dorm.

I read the horrible news this morning. This is so awful. I know the body hasn't been "confirmed", but her personal items were found next to the body, so frankly, that confirms it for me.

This is so terrible. My heart is aching. To be left all alone to the elements like that too. My prayers go out to her and her family.

Let this show other girls to take a buddy out when exploring or visiting an isolated area.

So tragic :(

Seems to me a predator is a predator - student or otherwise! Could be faculty, another student, local, someone traveling on I88, passing by. Very scary situation. :(

ETA: Until DNA evidence proves this is Toni and COD is determined, all that I say is speculation only. It could be a natural death, suicide, or another person altogether. moo

LE has not stated this is a homicide investigation.

IIRC, a death investigation is conducted for all younger persons (who are below the age of dying a natural death later in life...) to determine the cause. Imo, death investigation does not automatically equate homicide investigation. LE has not released to the public if this was an accident, natural causes (while unlikely, younger people do die of natural causes most often due to an unknown previous medical condition) or foul play.

I think it is too early to assume a predator is out there lurking...and the cause of Toni's passing. Also, it would be prudent for NIU campus security to remind students to practise safety precautions - whether this tragic event occured or not.

Also, some people are speculating that the use of the word remains indicates partial remains. Finding human remains, or found human remains is a standard across the board term when LE finds a body. They did not say partial human remains were found.. (which is common in media articles when in fact partial remains are found). Usually LE will state human remains (which means the body is not yet fully skeletonized) or skeletal remains...

It's far to early imo to speculate on what condition Toni was found...

Also, LE will not officially ID a body until the coroner has made an official id either via dentals, dna or visually id'ng some descriptor such as the tatoo.... SOME, not all ME's, may make an official id based on descriptors such as tatoos or scars but not all.

Watcher9-
I listened to Feithen's press conf carefully and he never said that they recovered a "body", only that they have recovered "human remains" and "items consistent with property belonging to Keller". I think your comment about LE possibly finding body part(s)/ bone(s) earlier during the search and just last evening deciding they had enough to call it a human is close to what happened.

I suspect the reason the identification is taking so long is because key elements that would facilitate this have not been found (ie. teeth for dental record comparison or fingers for finger prints)

The autopsy was reportedly started this AM. It does not take that long to identify individuals using dental records. Perhaps the forensic odontologist wasn't available last night or today but that seems unlikely.

The way Feithen parsed his answer to the questions about when the remains were found was very strange: "it's a process that has taken some time and we won't pinpoint the exact time..." I think the next official update is going to be even more upsetting than last nights.

Just wanted to thank you for your response and :dance:
welcome you to Websleuths!

WELCOME

Sorry if I overstepped my boundaries here as a member. There seems to be some evidence pointing toward murder by a predator rather than natural death or suicide. moo

...Last night on local NBC news it was reported the campus is on 'lock down' and that a 'killer is on the loose'.

In order to enter a dorm, proof that one lives there had to be presented.

Security was heightened.
Visiting hours cut short
increased hours for student transportation
Increased LE throughout campus

For me only, I find it difficult to translate all that info into a 'natural' death or suicide. Also reported was that Antinette had no illness predisposing her to death. Her parents have been notified.

I do think it's wise to wait until DNA testing comes back and COD is determined. I will go back and edit my post with the word 'speculation'. moo mho

Where did the "killer on the loose" quote come from?

Where did the "killer on the loose" quote come from?

Hi clu! Last night NBC Chicago had a late news (due to football game) and led into their news cast with:

...Campus on lock down
...Killer on the loose

had a reporter on campus talking about the new security measures such as showing ID to enter a dorm.

Each night I've watched local news to see if there are updates, reported the info here on the thread, and explained where the info came from...Fox Chicago, NBC Chicago, ABC Chicago...I do not have links so I guess it's a matter of believing what I say. moo lol

I wonder where the media got it...not from LE surely? Have they changed their wording from "death investigation"? I hate to think the media would use that term if they had not been told this from LE but we know better...

I heard that they are meeting at 5pm to ask NIU safety and detectives more questons to get more information on this investigation on campus today. The school was not on lockdown, just increased security like must swipe to get into dorms, etc.

Of course you did not overstep your boundaries eyesforcrime. I love your posts and love that you are a WS member. :blowkiss: I have not caught much news this weekend with a water heater that went out - and problems with hot water pressure after installation of the new water heater so I am catching news in quick bits and pieces while being distracted with RL stuff.

It is just my opinion, that NIU security is beefed up - and honestly should have been that way all along in this day and age. I'd hate for anyone to be able to waltz into my childs dorm without id prior to 11pm. I mean we all know crime doesn't know only certain hours.... And after reading this, I thought that, wow the security measures at NIU have not changed at all since I started there in the fall of 1984. Not good imo, not in this day and age and this many years later.....

I do believe Toni was an unfortunate victim of a predator of somekind.... but I choose to wait for further news and confirmation from LE before letting my mind wander too far.

I will admit, I had nagging feelings and reminders in the days prior to Toni's (likely) remains being found and kept recalling the Tammy Zywicki (sp?) case (which is no where near NIU) and the 1985 unsolved murder of Kristina Wesselman ( Glen Ellyn, IL). They both kept coming to mind... and I couldn't allow my mind to fully go there yet with Toni's case without further info from LE.

So no worries. No boundaries overstepped.

Hi Cubby, my first thought was also of Christina. The Christina Wesselman murder was horrific, we lived in Glen Ellyn at the time and knew the family - still do. For weeks, I went into work late because I insisted on driving my kids to school, something they didn't like or want. I all but put a harness on my daughter and wouldn't let her go anywhere by herself, not even to her friend's down the street. she was ready to leave home. moo mho

Christina was found murdered and sexually assaulted in a field next to the Jewel. The family has never given up on finding the predator - so far no luck. moo mho

This new article seems to confirm that LE did indeed find the remains before admitting so to the public:

"Police now say they found human remains in the park earlier on in the investigation than they publicly admitted. Those remains have yet to be identified. However, Keller's case was reclassified into a death investigation over the weekend."
