GUILTY IL - Antinette 'Toni' Keller, 18, DeKalb, NIU Student, 14 October 2010

I hope that in this particular case, LE does not hesitate in releasing cause and manner of death, when known, as it has such an impact on this college community. From what I read at Chicago Tribune, they are still calling it a "death investigation". Any increased security at the campus would be automatic in any event.

Has it been reported that it is 100% sure that this is Antinette's body that was found? I can't find an article stating that this is Antinette.

Bumping me. Please post a link indicating that LE found Antinette's body and confirmed that it is her. I have missed something and would like to read the article. Thank you.

This new article seems to confirm that LE did indeed find the remains before admitting so to the public:

"Police now say they found human remains in the park earlier on in the investigation than they publicly admitted. Those remains have yet to be identified. However, Keller's case was reclassified into a death investigation over the weekend."

All I can say is wow. Imo, if we go back and read some of the police quotes from thursday and friday it does sound like perhaps they had found the remains 1-2 days prior to making it public. Any idea's on why the delay? Especially if there is any chance the public is at risk? :waitasec:

im surprised if they found her earlier than saturday because they had a presser at 9pm sat night and apparently the facebook adm which is the cousin in the family said the family was told a hour and a half prior there was no new news and then and hour before the presser they told the family they found remains. you would think they would at least confirm the identity of the remains by now...especially if it was found prior to saturday. i heard they need dental records and thats what is taking so long over the weekend and they need the autopsy to be completed. im pretty sure there is a presser that is suppose to happen this afternoon

DeKALB) As DeKalb County authorities worked to identify what they believe is the body of missing college freshman Antinette Keller, her family was together at home Sunday, trying to comfort each other and come to terms with the idea that the 18-year-old Plainfield woman is likely dead.

“Basically, Toni is gone. We don’t have her anymore,” said Keller’s cousin, Mary ****. “Sometimes the details don’t matter when you bring it down to that. You can’t fix that.”

A poster distribution scheduled for Sunday on the Northern Illinois University campus was cancelled **snip**

Wonder if it had to do with informing the family. When news first came out that Toni was missing, mom had to be hospitalized. She has since been released but who knows, maybe they needed time to reach immediate family or prepare family. moo mho

It's possible that LE does not feel the public is at risk and that is why the delay plus not calling it a homicide...I can't imagine they would believe they have a "killer on the loose" and yet remain close-mouthed about it.

I believe they are still awaiting official id but the remains are believed to be Toni's based on items found in the immediate vicinity to where the remains were found.

Sorry I can't find a link right now. Been trying to get hot water pressure for 2 days now and dropping in sporatically. I think a few articles are previously linked in the thread.

This picture below was posted on fb on October 22nd, that was Friday. Sure looks like a whole lot of LE activity with the crime tape, trailer and what have you, just for a search in the park. I would say that they found remains sometime Friday morning and then set up camp without notifying John Q Public and the media.

Photo No. 20 on the "Fans photos from Missing Antinette Keller" album.

I only see two vehicles in the above photo. Doesn't look like much activity imo. I'd guess from the looks of the photo this is the area they had taped off to the public during the search. I'd imagine there would be far more than two vehicles and a trailer if they were processing a crime scene, but then again the trailer could have been blocking the actual area the potential crime scene was being processed.

It's been pretty warm in the Chicago area almost all of October. We've had a few 80+ degree days. I can't help but wonder if an official id has not yet been made due to decomp? It would seem an official id should be soon - if dentals can be used. God, the thought that LE could not make id with dentals is horrible to even think about.

Seems to me a predator is a predator - student or otherwise! Could be faculty, another student, local, someone traveling on I88, passing by. Very scary situation. :(

Not every killer is a psychopath...This could have been a crime of opportunity or an armed robbery gone bad.

I would think they would have an id on the remains in a day or two at most. I know is some cases it takes much longer when the body has been hidden for years, but it seems this isn't the case here. Still don't know much of anything except a body was found.

A news briefing is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday in the DeKalb City Council Chambers.

Maybe I missed it, but is there any wildlife in the area? Any type of animal that could have done this? Could this have prevented ID depending on what happened.

I've been thinking the exact same thing...Not sure I want to hear what LE have to say. moo

Coyotes have been in the general vicinity of late, I know that for a fact.

Thank you for the quick reply. I don't know why but I have felt all along that this was some sort of animal attack, as odd as that might be. Just a feeling, combined with some of the wording of statements.

Definately coyotes. I do not believe there are any other predatory animals native to the area. however the small possibility always exists some exotic pet owner released a non native predatory animal into the wooded area. Recently they were trying to get an alligator out of the chicago river..... It is a complete long shot but not impossible.

There is something not sitting right with me about LE's statement (paraphrased) 'we don't know how long it will take to identify the remains'. We know even with DNA it could be rushed in 2-3 weeks max.

I can't quite figure out if LE is playing this so/too/especially tight to the vest and they have not so good public speakers? Or if the bottom is just gonna drop out when they do release news. I'm almost afraid of the latter and just hoping this is poor communication skills.

On a slightly OT note, my neighbor who is ISP told me there are some pretty shady area's in deKalb. He did not say specifically where and he didn't sound very familiar with Toni's case.

Guess we'll find out more tomorrow.

The FaceBook site has a couple of posts concerning a briefing on the case tomorrow at 11AM. A reporter from the Daily Chronicle said that DeKalb County State's Attorney John Farrell will be attending to clarify why police are withholding some information.

Listened to NBC & CBS Chicago news at 6:00p. This is so strange, difficult to make sense of. LE did find the remains days before the announcement on Saturday night. Could it be they didn't realize the remains were human?

Students interviewed expressed frustration at LE for the slow release of information. Press conference scheduled tomorrow (Tues.) at 11:00 AM Chicago time. That would be noon Eastern time. moo
