Listened to NBC & CBS Chicago news at 6:00p. This is so strange, difficult to make sense of. LE did find the remains days before the announcement on Saturday night. Could it be they didn't realize the remains were human?
Students interviewed expressed frustration at LE for the slow release of information. Press conference scheduled tomorrow (Tues.) at 11:00 AM Chicago time. That would be noon Eastern time. moo
The evidence tent went up sometime on Friday.Cubby said up thread "remains are believed to be Toni's based on items found in the immediate vicinity to where the remains were found."
How could LE have not known they were human remains or that of Toni's if personal items were found near by? Unless they found items like the dorm key and camera and the remains were found in a separate area away from them. I would think the K9 search team brought in their tracking dog and their cadaver dog and the cadaver dog would have alerted on the remain within a short time of searching the area on Friday. Cadaver dogs are trained to not alert on dead animals and such.

Maybe I missed it, but is there any wildlife in the area? Any type of animal that could have done this? Could this have prevented ID depending on what happened.
You are correct on the reports of Mountain Lions, at least over in my area which is to the west of DeKalb. I was going to suggest that also but that is a topic of major contention in our area. There have been numerous reports of sightings however DNR claims they are not in the area. Personally, we had an experience a few months ago while out horseback riding that made a believer of me, that's all I'll say right now.I live by the city and have seen foxes and whatnot. There have been reports of Mountain Lions in the area as well and I have personally seen one as road kill. That was the strangest thing I've ever seen in my life. Mountain Lions had made the news previous to that but I never heard about the one I saw in the news. Imagine being the driver from that one...eek.
Anyway, DeKalb would probably have the same wildlife as me and then some.
I had this very same thought a day or so ago. Not based on anything other than a hunch.I have been wondering if LE didn't disclose they found remains because they were watching for somebody to "return to the scene of the crime".
They say a killer might return for a look. Snap goes the trap!

Dogs from Midwest K9 Emergency Response Team tracked Kellers scent in the park, and police used their findings and witness statements to pinpoint the areas Keller would most likely have been.
Young would not say how far Kellers scent was tracked or whether they have been able to find her cell phone. He would not confirm a report that Kellers dorm key was found in the park.
I cant really say what we have done and what we have not at this point, Young said. Like any investigation, you want to make sure you do it thoroughly and make sure the integrity of the case is maintained.
Interesting info in this article.. talks about 2 other people who have gone missing in the area in the last couple of years.
This new article seems to confirm that LE did indeed find the remains before admitting so to the public:
"Police now say they found human remains in the park earlier on in the investigation than they publicly admitted. Those remains have yet to be identified. However, Keller's case was reclassified into a death investigation over the weekend."

The FaceBook site has a couple of posts concerning a briefing on the case tomorrow at 11AM. A reporter from the Daily Chronicle said that DeKalb County State's Attorney John Farrell will be attending to clarify why police are withholding some information.
