Is it possible that this was a suicide?

Listened to NBC & CBS Chicago news at 6:00p. This is so strange, difficult to make sense of. LE did find the remains days before the announcement on Saturday night. Could it be they didn't realize the remains were human?

Students interviewed expressed frustration at LE for the slow release of information. Press conference scheduled tomorrow (Tues.) at 11:00 AM Chicago time. That would be noon Eastern time. moo

Cubby said up thread "remains are believed to be Toni's based on items found in the immediate vicinity to where the remains were found."

How could LE have not known they were human remains or that of Toni's if personal items were found near by? Unless they found items like the dorm key and camera and the remains were found in a separate area away from them. I would think the K9 search team brought in their tracking dog and their cadaver dog and the cadaver dog would have alerted on the remain within a short time of searching the area on Friday. Cadaver dogs are trained to not alert on dead animals and such.

The evidence tent went up sometime on Friday.

So much for the lack of activity theory on Friday. Maybe their forensic team is a one man operation. Who said you need 100 cars to conduct an investigation.

Maybe I missed it, but is there any wildlife in the area? Any type of animal that could have done this? Could this have prevented ID depending on what happened.

I live by the city and have seen foxes and whatnot. There have been reports of Mountain Lions in the area as well and I have personally seen one as road kill. That was the strangest thing I've ever seen in my life. Mountain Lions had made the news previous to that but I never heard about the one I saw in the news. Imagine being the driver from that one...eek.

Anyway, DeKalb would probably have the same wildlife as me and then some.

I have been wondering if LE didn't disclose they found remains because they were watching for somebody to "return to the scene of the crime".

They say a killer might return for a look. Snap goes the trap!

Eyes4Crime-

I have been wondering the same thing- is it possible that LE didn't realize they had found human remains for some period of time ? I can't think of another explanation for the delay. Surely, once they knew they had found human remains, they had an obligation to at least announce it because of public safety concerns.

I continue to be stuck on the press conf announcement that they had found remains "early" in the investigation. I believe the investigation refers to the search for Antinette which began the evening of 10/15.

The Daily Chronicle posted a timeline today- http://bit.ly/9Q472f . On 10/19, NIU discontinued the ground search. I believe that was announced in the AM. 10/20 the investigation was focused on a false lead west of the area now known to be involved. At 6:30PM 10/21, the investigation seemed revived when it was announced that the DeKalb County Major Case Squad was taking over. I believe the area in Prairie Park was cordoned off that evening.

This has me thinking that between 10/19 & the evening of 10/21, in the process of evaluating what they had and what to do next, LE suspected they may have recovered remains between 10/15 & 10/18. I think, with this realization, they returned to the area where these remains had been found, roped it off, brought in lights and began searching in earnest. Between Fri night and Sat afternoon, I think they recovered more evidence that confirmed their suspicion and they called a quick press conference.

I do not think that they have a "body". I think this is what is making identification take so long. Dental identification does not take that long. Getting dental records does not take that long.

I am so sad for the family. This delay must be added torture.

You are correct on the reports of Mountain Lions, at least over in my area which is to the west of DeKalb. I was going to suggest that also but that is a topic of major contention in our area. There have been numerous reports of sightings however DNR claims they are not in the area. Personally, we had an experience a few months ago while out horseback riding that made a believer of me, that's all I'll say right now.

I had this very same thought a day or so ago. Not based on anything other than a hunch.

Yes, Foxes, I forgot about them as I don't think of them as predatory and they are pretty small - at least the ones I have seen.

I also recall the reports of Mountain Lions in the area - but that has been ruled out as being a mountain lion. (google mountain lion reported in wheaton illinois) I looked at the article earlier and a follow up article from someone at Brookfield zoo examined the paw prints and said they were too small to be a mountain lion.

just wanted to add what I heard about reported sightings of Mountain Lions.

http://bolingbrooksun.suntimes.com/news/2061230-418/keller-park-police-missing-niu.html
Dogs from Midwest K9 Emergency Response Team tracked Keller’s scent in the park, and police used their findings and witness statements to pinpoint the areas Keller would most likely have been.

Young would not say how far Keller’s scent was tracked or whether they have been able to find her cell phone. He would not confirm a report that Keller’s dorm key was found in the park.

“I can’t really say what we have done and what we have not at this point,” Young said. “Like any investigation, you want to make sure you do it thoroughly and make sure the integrity of the case is maintained.”

Interesting info in this article.. talks about 2 other people who have gone missing in the area in the last couple of years.

Thanks for the info. LE will be talking more on Tues. Hopefully to fill us in on the gap. I wonder if they have a COD and TOD yet?

This new article seems to confirm that LE did indeed find the remains before admitting so to the public:

"Police now say they found human remains in the park earlier on in the investigation than they publicly admitted. Those remains have yet to be identified. However, Keller's case was reclassified into a death investigation over the weekend."

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7744183

This speaks volumes. I remember a case in WI - the name of victim skips my mind, but LE took days to identify and never released the COD. Why is it when there is a University related crime, everything becomes so hush hush??

I agree, I feel like when its a colleges reputation, like morgan harrington disappearning at the schools metallic concert things are unusual, people respond differently.
think about this, if animals tore apart her body if someone killed her there n left the body, wouldnt u think the animals and the smells would cause a scene and she would be found immediately. i dont think the park was completely empty the day she disappeared or the following day. i just cant believe how they cant id her yet...i mean in a week time you can tell if its a deceased girl right? what on earth happened to her...breaks my heart! I don't think they are going to divulge much in the morning.

are there cameras in the park or on the street close to going into or out of the park?

The FaceBook site has a couple of posts concerning a briefing on the case tomorrow at 11AM. A reporter from the Daily Chronicle said that DeKalb County State's Attorney John Farrell will be attending to clarify why police are withholding some information.

BBM. This says it all. The above clearly rules out accidental death, suicide or animal attack.

The following is pure speculation but between the above bbm and the fact that LE waited at least about 1 day to publically state remains were found leads me to believe they have a possible POI in mind and might be making an arrest quickly. I can't help but think someone said something to LE about this crime prior to Toni (not yet officially id'd) being found which matches what they know about the crime scene.

anyone hear from the ex boyfriend of hers? they say you question the people closest to the victims, im not accusing the ex boyfriend..but havent seen him posting on the fb page that I can be like oh thats the ex boyfriend. did he go to school there?

What would be the purpose of withholding info from the DA's office? When LE and the DA are at odds, things get hinky for me....I have flashbacks to the JonBenet Ramsey case (not that these two crimes are anything alike).
