GUILTY IL - Antinette 'Toni' Keller, 18, DeKalb, NIU Student, 14 October 2010

BBM. This says it all. The above clearly rules out accidental death, suicide or animal attack.

jmo

I originally mentioned the animals because of the condition of the remains, not as a cause of death.

Yes, Foxes, I forgot about them as I don't think of them as predatory and they are pretty small - at least the ones I have seen.

I also recall the reports of Mountain Lions in the area - but that has been ruled out as being a mountain lion. (google mountain lion reported in wheaton illinois) I looked at the article earlier and a follow up article from someone at Brookfield zoo examined the paw prints and said they were too small to be a mountain lion.

just wanted to add what I heard about reported sightings of Mountain Lions.

I know I am toe-ing the line of taking this off topic but really quick! Didn't police kill one around the North Shore? That is where I saw the one, though it was at least a year after that fiasco. I remember, a lot of people were upset about them killing it or something.

You are right, foxes aren't really a threat to humans, at least living ones. The ones I've seen are pretty small and pretty darn cute :)

ETA: Yes, confirmation on the Mountain Lion shot in Chicago. I also will swear until my dying day that I saw one. It was on Sanders Road north of Willow Rd in I guess that's Northbrook? http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/04/080417-cougar-shot.html

In my opinion though, she was not attacked by one.

respectfullu snipped. Now I remember this story... but I don't recall if it was ever determined if this animal was from the wild or a pet that an exotic pet owner released. And not, not too far OT since the question/discussion of wild animals in the area came up....

What would be the purpose of withholding info from the DA's office? When LE and the DA are at odds, things get hinky for me....I have flashbacks to the JonBenet Ramsey case (not that these two crimes are anything alike).

The DA will be at the presser with LE to help explain the purpose of withholding info from the public. they are not at odds.

I just heard a reporter say that they found Toni's remains (CBS). So very sad. My heart goes out to her family.

Has it been reported that it is 100% sure that this is Antinette's body that was found? I can't find an article stating that this is Antinette.

Hi Patty G. ~ No I don't think the officials have officially said her name.
Someone else posted a comment regarding the irresponsibility of reporters earlier in the thread. I posted what I heard on the 10 o'clock news on the 23rd - the broadcaster DID state Toni's name in her report. After I posted, I caught up on reading here and realized the id of whoever they found had not been confirmed. To say there's a 'killer on the loose' is irresponsible reporting too. I guess that's the way it is these days.

In this case, it sounds as if they will be confiming that this is Toni. But it is confusing when we hear different sources reporting different things before they confirms the facts.

An earlier poster suggested that a possible explanation for the peculiar way LE is behaving may be because they have a POI. I am starting to think that could be true and that they believe Antinette was the intended target and that there is no risk to others.

The heightened campus security measures seem like they are more to address campus/ parent anxiety than the risk of a killer on the loose. At least one campus video clips from today shows how ineffective the swipe cards are. It shows one person swiping and holding the door for several others.

The 10/21 post on the Disney site from the mother of the ex-boyfriend's roommate was interesting-
the cops have told her ex-boyfriend that several of her items were found in a "hobo camp" in a small wooded area, but there's been no sign of her
http://bit.ly/cLm0sY

Could LE have been feeding info to the ex-bf to gauge his reaction ?

In one of the video clips (that I can't find at the moment), a male student who was among the group that last saw her mentioned that he went to the park looking for her several times including that afternoon. I apologize for such potentially hurtful speculation but, that would be a likely explanation of one's presence in the area on the day she disappeared if someone feared they may have been spotted.

None of this explains the identification delay though.

CBS Chicago nightly news at 10:00pm had this to say:

The District Attorney is appearing at the press conference tomorrow to make a statement. According to NBC, the speculation surrounding his appearance suggests the possibility there already has been an arrest or a person in custody for this crime. (speculation only)

However, this doesn't explain the delay in identification of the body.

Interviewed students who were frustrated and frightened...talked about parents who were just as frustrated. There will be a community meeting tomorrow night with students and family.

My comments: That would be great if LE have a suspect or an arrest...wonder why they can't relay that info if true?

FYI: There is a huge storm brewing in Chicago with winds up to 60mph or more. Tornado warnings out in the area of DeKalb. Tomorrow's weather will be severe and not sure how that will affect the press conference.
That's it for now. moo mho

This new article seems to confirm that LE did indeed find the remains before admitting so to the public:

"Police now say they found human remains in the park earlier on in the investigation than they publicly admitted. Those remains have yet to be identified. However, Keller's case was reclassified into a death investigation over the weekend."

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7744183

Something stuck out to me while reading the article from the day before the linked article I accessed from the same link. It's probably nothing.

A classmate says that he was one of the last people to see Toni before she left to go on her park visit. He says that she asked him to call her when he got out of classes. He did call her at 3PM but she didn't answer so he figured she was busy and called her back several hours later. Check, no problem.

The thing is, I read somewhere else that Toni had an art class at 2PM on Thursday that she didn't show up for. The teacher was interviewed and stated this (I'd have to search for where I read this). I noted it because I had wondered earlier if Toni had any other classes scheduled from Thursday noon and/or Friday before she left campus to go home on Friday.

Does anyone recall how long classes last? An art class would be how long? It was an art teacher who was interviewed. If Toni had a class at 2PM on Thursday, she would be planning to stay in the park for an hour and a half tops in order to get to her class on time. Possibly it was that class she was getting inspiration for. That means something happened to her almost immediately upon entering the park, that is, if she even made it there. Apparently she returned briefly to her dorm room before leaving for the park. :waitasec:

The only thing I do not understand is the use of "death investigation." That is such an odd term for this type of case, i.e. a body found in the woods. Could it be they really could not determine cause of death?

Any type of death or crime in or near a college is almost automatically "hush-hush" in a way, so that it appears there is some sort of a cover-up almost. No one wants a panic and no college wants a bad reputation. But nothing is more important than letting the student population know the facts so they can decide for themselves if they are in danger.

Maybe they'll do fingerprinting of the key and other belongings to see if someone else had handled them. Keep in mind I don't know what I'm talking about but does that sound possible?

Actually, their silence suggests they have someone under surveillance but not in custody. Hope they are not waiting on DNA match to make an arrest.

I haven't commented on this thread because frankly, the case gives me the heebie jeebies. There is just enough info to make my imagination go crazy.

RIP Toni. Prayers for your family and friends.

SuziQ-
You are so right. The publicly available information is just enough to let people's imaginations go wild. Because parts of the story don't make sense ("death investigation" vs homicide, "human remains" vs body, remains found "early" in investigation but not announced/recognized? when found, problems with identification), one can't help but try to reconcile these pieces of info and it leads to dark, scary places. Today I am wondering if they just found a spot in the soil with blood soaked in. Is that remains ?

I am not from the area. Can anyone recommend a link for live coverage of today's press briefing ?

Toni's death was reclassified as a homicide Sat. night:
www.wlsam.com/Article.asp?id=1998494&spid=

What an oddly-written article, twice they say Toni "is", as "is" a resident of such and such and "is" an art student, etc...

They say police classified this as a "homicide" on Saturday, wonder why the Trib did not get this news, or any other outlet? Just this radio station?
