GUILTY IL - Antinette 'Toni' Keller, 18, DeKalb, NIU Student, 14 October 2010

Are you thinking like possibly at other campsites?

No, I'm thinking if the remains were burnt enough to be unreconizable as human they were in many small pieces, no longer an intact skeleton and it took LE from the time of initial discovery on the 16th through sometime on the morning of the 18th to complete their search of the crime scene area.

I'm new here and I have posted links to at least one social networking site. Recently, a mod posted something about what is acceptable. I must have misunderstood. Should I find and delete those links ? They material they link to is still online and available to the public.

Its fine to link it as long as it is still online and available to the public. You just can't copy and paste from it...or use exact quotes. Glad you are here on WS!

Glad to see LE has a POI in custody.

Man arrested in Louisiana as 'person of interest' in NIU case

The man that was arrested came to police attention when he called to report a fire in the park. When he reported is it worded ambiguosly. Glad they got him though. Hopefully he is the one.

Maybe my brain isn't working so well tonight, but why would the guilty party call to report a fire in the park and then take off to another state? :waitasec: Maybe I am not thinking of an obvious explanation.

You aren't kidding about the ambiguous wording. Confusing language has been the mantle of LE since reporting on this case started. This last bit of news really has me scratching my head.

I wonder if this is the same report that nokeofduke mentioned as a rumor he'd heard. NoD- you out there ? Have any more details on this ?

Rumor Intelligence...
1. Fire reported by resident. Prairie Park area, in woods, unknown location on Oct. 14 ~ 4pm.

Feithen asked the public to report information about suspicious people or activities, "especially fires in Prairie Park between midday Oct. 14 and the morning of Oct. 18"...http://bit.ly/dlkUmi

And this bothers me. Alot. I was afraid that LE might not have had a grip on what turned out to be a/ the crime scene.

I'm right there with ya, unless like an arsonist, he wanted to see the response...idk...

No offense to anyone, but facebook is usually a far better source now
than MSM, and often more accurate.

Me too. Totally messed up.

Could it be guilt that had him call it in ? Is this consistant with behavior anyone has seen in other cases ?

Yes but increasingly, FaceBook pages are set to private. It's getting to be luck when you find people involved in a case talking about it publicly online.

 Why would he call attention to himself? This is really messed up.

It is perplexing isn't it? What coms to mind is the guy burnt Toni's body beyond recognition so she couldn't be identified but scattered her clothes around for the ID.

Calls the police reporting a fire and takes off for Louisiana...

The two scenarios are sort of like - catch me if you can or, can you figure this one out? Taunting the police? I really don't know and now wondering if this person has some mental issues going on. Being a murderous psychopath is not necessarily a mental disorder but playing the treacherous games seems to be. all just my opinion and that kind of stuff.

I just don't think this killer burned the body to delay identity of the victim....I think he did it to destroy evidence that might link the crime to him (such as dna from a sexual assault) OR he did it to fulfill some perverse need. I think the clothing and other items were left there to confirm her identity.

What we have here is a weirdo.

It almost seems like he wants to be caught. Not hiding himself or evidence from the crime (clothing) is just plain weird alright.

Yes, right.....kinda like reporting the fire when you're the one that set it!:waitasec:

When I first learned of the POI my suspicions of another NIU student, particularly a jilted ex, ended. I thought this has to be the work of some random lunatic.

After, thinking about this for the past couple of hours, I am waffling again.

The most recent article in the Plainfield Patch says:

Extradition is pending, and investigators are hoping to glean more information from interviews currently under way, he said.

Beyond that, Feithen would not say whether the suspect is male or female, nor would he verify if the person was known to Keller or attended Northern Illinois University. He would not disclose what source of information led them to the suspect.

"We have investigative reasons that we don't want to do that," he said. "We're just being very cautious in this case."

I am just not ready to give up on the idea that this killer may have known Antinette.

In one of the news clips a reporter said extradition was expected to be completed within 24 hrs. I was hoping for an arraignment tomorrow but maybe not. Once he/ she is arraigned we will learn more.

---

About items recovered at the scene. I don't remember any article stating that her clothing was found in the area. Please correct me if I am misremembering; maybe it was in the recent press briefing.

Clothing would be more suggestive to me of a sexual assault and, if an ex did this, I did not think there was a sexual assault; I envisioned a rage killing.

The only description that I have seen of what was recovered was "recovered items consistent with property belonging to Keller".

This could be items such as the current dorm key. I thought perhaps little things that may have been discarded in a struggle or overlooked with the fire- her lighter, misc art supplies- nothing big and nothing that has been publicly identified as Toni's.

The latest news makes no sense to me. LE must have their reasons. We'll have to wait and see. I hope they get the right person.

Night all.

respectfully snipped for length. Your above info is correct. There has been no MSM info that it was clothing found, just items consistent with belonging to Toni.

I have no info on the other fires if any. Only the mention about the one by a woman that I did not know prior to today. I do notice the Public Request for fire info followed the rumour int. I would ask also if anyone last took photos of the bonfire sites. Janet mentioned that the others looked recent too. She was more concerned about Bonfire 3 which didn't have much evidence of LE action yet the wood is more charred there than anywhere else. The public might have photos of these sites prior to the scene being roped off last week. Many might be scared of prosecution of fire violations so something would have to be done. I see bonfire photos on several kids FB and Myspace. I was thinking that some timeline and examination of these bonfire photos might show other clues.

Another issue was a scenario proposed here by another. Rape, Kill. Stash. Come back later to burn. Maybe at night. It would be nice to tie a past example of this happening in another case. It seems pausible. The CSI effect is causing people not to want DNA anywhere.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v395/jackhartmann/Janet/NIU missing student October 2010/ has photos of the five bonfires sites between the upper paved trail and the Kish river. The other two I could not take due battery fading. Bonfire #2 is where I would suspect the remains were found but I am not as strong since further review of the bonfire 3 photos.

AS for why would a killer show the fires?
I rem a fire chief who lit up places he visited. He then went to them and explain how the residue pattern and burn marks showed the fires origin. Yet he was the source of these fires. I know the case is out there, but as a fire protection engineer, the whole idea of a FC starting fires was a shock.

So the lingering questions on the PoI that i have are?
P1 - did the person burn themselves as said happens often.
P2 - what was the accelerant. My exp is that gasoline fires singe the trees in a huge bonfire. I hope LE documented the area above and residue was collected to verify the chemical traces.
P3 - Did the person borrow a relatives car so the charge is unauthorized vs. stolen?
P4 - was this person a townie resident, student, or transient.
P5 - Where did the person live? work? By the Junction?
P6 - How did the person carry the accelerant in? I saw a NIU student today carry a nice photo bag today in Prairie park and it was a size of a cooler. Easily could hold two gallons. The amount to start a bonfire is only a cup at best of kerosine. Even matches or flint/steel work. So why have the extra there? That would require preplanning or several trips to the nearest gas station. The Amoco on Rt 38/ lincoln hwy would have video and receipts. Same for the Speedway on South Fourth Street. I am not so sure for the Marathon on Pearl and 38.
p7 - I saw much bottlecaps from beer bottles and cans. not much food trash though in the time I was in the park today. There are garbage cans along the paved path. I hope they were checked.
p8 - The people who get questioned by police exhibit a wide variety of emotions. Many are trained in body language. I have seen several cases where some detective hinted that they might be involved to gauge the body language. It is not foolproof, but often makes prioiritizing people to re-interview again. If this person was young and not much interaction, the internal stress could cause the flight. The person overthinks the scenario and panics. Sorta like the celeb in the White Bronco in the 1990's.
p9 - Recently in IL, we have had numerous people put in jail, accused or convicted of a crime where DNA or other proof exonerated them. Everyone is innocent till proven guilty. The honey bee killer got 2 weeks extra and now is free due to the exonerated officer being charged erroneously. That case now has no leads.
p10 - Did the PoI have his apartment, place searched. Computer? Souvenirs? Stalking pattern? Prior arrests? Social media posts?

I will be doing a 16 hour jaunt to Cleveland and back Friday so won;t have net access. Text at 756 NUKE works tho if you need to get a text answer. I won't be answering the phone for most via plane and a site which will in all likelihood make me turn it off or surrender..,

Thanks for all the great thoughts here.
