I have attempted to get some feedback from Debbie's brother J, and other siblings re: a grass marker for Debbie. Even though Debbie's Aunt gave her permission to have a marker made & placed, I still thought it was important to get additional input. I emailed J last Sept./2018, and this past June/2019. Debbie's brothers x 2, and her sisters x 2 (?) were all younger than Debbie at the time of her death in Feb./1966. I believe J was 8 (?). The only email I have for J, is an email through his wife D. I hope that my emails and questions to J have not been immediately deleted, and mean no disrespect in my attempts to have a marker made for Debbie. As of this post, I have not set up a FB account for Debbie, or a "go fund me account" to help with the costs for a marker.

"Grasping at Straws"

Recently, I was watching an old 1950's B & W murder mystery. The killer, was sending a note and flowers to the gravesite of his victim each and every day after she was buried. In the end, the detectives were able to get some verification from the florist and cemetery as to who was sending the flowers. Yes, "it's only a movie", but an interesting way to find the perp. For those of you that have followed this, you know that Debbie does not have a marker at the cemetery where she is buried; however, she's right next to her maternal grandparents and other relatives. Who knows?? It's possible that flowers have been sent in the past for Debbie, but may have been placed "close -by" since no marker. I doubt very much if the DPCSO ever even considered looking into something like this. That would just be too much work for them. I also understand that any "killer", with an ounce of brains, is going to remain anonymous. Still, there's plenty of technology to "trace" things.

'We don't give up:' Cold case detectives hope DNA, witnesses will lead to answers in 1979 murder in WI (from 08/07/19 news post).

Once again, another example of detectives in other states that continue to work, AND SOLVE, unsolved cold cases. Debbie's murder has gone unsolved for 53+ years, with very little, if any recent efforts by the DPCSO.

'Helpful 1' - "come out, come out, wherever you are". Would you and/or relatives of yours, be willing to submit DNA for sampling purposes, if legal authorization (i.e. Judge, etc.) could be obtained to have Debbie's body exhumed? It's never too late to do the right thing.

Looking for Benjamin School Graduates - Class of 1969
Including: DB, JM, RD, JM, EF, AM, LH, DP, DH, WS, SH, WS, RH, KT, MH, SV, PK, MW, RL, & MW

The above are "maiden names". If reading, I hope that all of you are in good health, are happily married/single/other, and enjoying life. Some of you may not have been at Benjamin when Debbie was murdered. For those of us that were there and knew Debbie, we each have different memories of Debbie, and didn't know much about her investigation at the young age of 10. Debbie was gone, and most of us were very sad.

I will be "visiting" Debbie in the next 1 -2 months, stopping at Lies & Fair Oaks, and hope to finalize a grass marker, costs, and lettering/etchings with the cemetery at that time. There may have been other "followers" of Debbie's WS site a few years ago, but I don't think anyone from Benjamin has ever posted anything; with the exception of LW(?). Whether or not this post reaches any classmates of Debbie's remains to be seen. I hope it does. The main purpose of this is to find a classmate, that finds another classmate, etc., etc. and eventually ask for/get donations that would be put towards the costs of Debbie's grass marker.

The above would also apply to Zachman (Debbie's nephew), Helpful 1 (LS's relative), and the DuPage County Sheriff's Office/Detectives.

If I can "speak" for Websleuths and the individuals that have followed Debbie's site, thank you for your response to my 08/08/19 post. I would encourage you to contact the DuPage County Sheriff's Office at 630/407-2400, and ask for the Cold Case Unit - "Unsolved Murders".

In the meantime, if there's anything you would like to post about yourself, your family, Loren S., Maryanne, memories, "life", etc., we'd like for you to share. I can completely understand if you have no interest in doing this.

WI Solves yet ANOTHER Cold Case
I just read that the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office solved the 35 year old cold case of Traci Hammerberg (1966 - 1984) through the use of "Forensic Genealogy". Her killer, Phillip Cross, died in 2012 of an apparent drug overdose. This is another example of dedicated law enforcement officials that put forth a great deal of time and effort to bring criminals to justice, even if they are deceased.

WI Solves yet ANOTHER COLD CASE
The SECOND, in less than 2 months. Jane Doe (a.k.a. Peggy Lynn Johnson) was dumped in a cornfield in Racine County back in 1999. Sounds familiar to Debbie. The only difference is that WI only took 20 years to figure it out, NOT 53+ years. Yes, I realize every "Cold Case" is different, and forensic science in the 1960's was "non-existent".

Select what item or items below that best describes why Debbie's case has not been solved:
1) Money not available in DPC for cold case investigations. DPCSD BROKE??? DPCSD Budget reduced??
2) Politics
3) "Cover-Up" in 1966 (i.e. "it's not what you know, but who you know", religion(s), Judge Fitzgerald dismissed before Grand Jury started, 2nd Judge assigned to DF's Grand Jury due to a supposed "conflict of interest" - what a JOKE!).
4) Doug S. (deceased) was the first person to meet with Loren S. in jail, even BEFORE his father and brother. Doug S., formerly of S & A that became S & T, who has provided legal representation for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet for MANY YEARS. George K's family (Klein Road) arrived/homesteaded in Wayne Township since the 1850's.
5) No DNA or "transfer DNA", with the exception of Debbie's hair from a hair brush. Her mother provided the brush long after Debbie was murdered. I can't imagine the sorrow her parents felt when they gave her brush to detectives/law enforcement. It's highly unlikely that any "transfer DNA" under her fingernails could be obtained after so many years. It's also unlikely that the DPCSO would even care to have her body exhumed; given the costs, and the potential for litigation against DPC if item 3 above can be proved. Please help "Helpful 1", and contact the DPCSO - Cold Case Division (per your 09/24/19 post).
6) John S's "connections" in the community, even though his wife E. "Klein" S. "wore the pants in the family"; the gene that LS (a.k.a. "Mr. I could have done it") didn't have. Lest we forget about the 6 lie detector tests that LS failed. WTF!! "I smell more Rats".

"Oops, I did it again" Britney S., and I exceeded the number of bytes allowed for a WS post. I get a bit upset when I hear/read about other cold cases being solved. Thanks for letting me "vent". WS just saved me $200 - kidding. Most of the above is repeat, sorry. That can happen when you get old(er). Have any of you "sleuther's" seen the movie "The Verdict"? Fact or fiction?? Could be true??

Debbie Figan, Age 10, Missing 11 February 1966

Debbie Fijan was just 10 years old when she was stabbed 19 times and left in an ice-crusted ditch on Lies Road near West Chicago on Feb. 11, 1966. The fifth-grader had stayed after school for a basketball game and was waiting for her mother to pick her up when she disappeared. The last person to see her, her Benjamin Elementary School teacher Loren Schofield, was charged with the killing, but the judge soon realized the evidence didn't match up. The case has been unsolved for 50 years.

11/16/2019 :
Thinking of you, and missing you today Debbie, which would have been your 64th birthday. I'll make sure to buy and eat a Hostess Fruit Pie, something we liked to share sometimes at lunch in school; "back in the days" when you could share your lunch with someone, and we didn't have any "peanut free" zones or tables. That's good, because I must have had PBJ in my lunch about 3 days/week. Now I just hope I can find a Fruit Pie; although, I don't even know if they make them anymore. Too many "unhealthy" ingredients, the best kind.

Last time I had a Hostess fruit pie it was disgusting. The filling no longer has any fruit and is just some kind of chemically made fruit flavored filling. They aren't the pies of the 60's and 70's.

Happy Birthday Debbie. I am so sorry someone cut your life short and no one has been held accountable for your murder.

I'm following the Peggy Lynn Johnson/Racine Jane Doe case. That case was solved by a tip from a concerned citizen reporting her killer was telling people she murdered someone back in Illinois 20 years ago.

If there is someone out there who has first hand information heard from Debbie's killer, please do the right thing and call the authorities. Call the Sheriff's Office at 630.407.2400 and ask for the Cold Case Unit.

"It's not what you know, but who you know", A "Cover-Up" to protect the Edna (K) S "family name"???
I was surprised to read below (Hist. Encyclopedia of IL) how many Klein's held the road commissioner "job" in Wayne Township in the 18 & 1900's. Loren's father John S., Edna K's husband, also served as Highway Commissioner in the 1960's up until May/1967. One or two of LS's brothers also served. Hmm...…..all those "unreported benefits"??? I know Loren's father was on an all expense paid fishing trip in Canada (May/1967) with 2 other individuals when 2 of them drowned. One on them worked for a heavy equipment manufacturer/supplier. Wasn't there a quarry on, or close to the "Schofield Farm"? Owned/operated by?? How soon did Wayne TS/LS's "father John" get a crew out to Lies to fix and repair any tire tracks where Debbie's body was found?? 12:00 a.m., 02/12/1966?? "The plot thickens"

Note the following below:
1)Page 929, left column towards bottom. "After his marriage, George Klein...…….". 90 acres of this 153 acres, section 23, became the "Schofield Farm" on the west side of Fair Oaks Rd. Debbie's body was found < 1/4 mile from the "Schofield Farm", on the north side of Lies.
2)Page 930, top left column. "Edna, born in July,1904". As most of you know, this is LS's mother.

Per your 09/24/19 post "Helpful 1": "Yes, I would be willing to help". Please contact the DPCSD at the above number/location per Cubby's 11/16/19 post. You would be doing the right thing.

FOIA: DPCFP (Plaintiff) vs. E "Klein" Schofield, et. al. (Defendants)
ORDER - "The subject property on 06/15/1973...…….the Petition to Condemn herein...…., and that DPCFP, plaintiff herein, has entered into a lease of said property for three years from the present time...…….". "IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED that the DPC Treasurer shall issue and mail checks payable as follows" (see below):

By the time the "Schofield Farm" (90 acres) was sold, many if not all of the Schofield's had "hightailed it". They couldn't even "show their faces" in public. EKS/other family members retained an Attorney for the sale of the farm >60 miles away from where they had lived. The payment/check to EKS was mailed to her son-in-law (Phil W.) in Plainfield, IL, who was married to Loren's sister Mary. Phil's sister Loretta was married to Doug S., THE FIRST family friend/Atty. that met LS in jail (see 06/09/19 post above).

"They had their man", and they (i.e. Loren, his wife MAS who burned LS's clothing, his father/mother, siblings, family relatives, etc.) "got away with murder".

Have you contacted the DuPage County Sheriff's Office Cold Case Unit yet "Helpful 1"? Please do the right thing and contact them. Help prove your families innocence.

"Quid Pro Quo"
John Ryvold Jr. (1923 - 2009) served as the Highway Commissioner of Wayne Township, IL for over 25 years, AFTER John Schofield. Mr. Ryvold also served as the Wayne Township Republican Chairman, and he served as the President of the DuPage County Highway Commissioners Association. Henry Van Acker served as Highway Commissioner from 1935 - 1947. Shortly after John Schofield drowned in 1967, Mr. Van Acker was appointed "interim HC" to fill the unexpired term of John Schofield. In 2001, Mr. Ryvold lost the election running as a Republican for HC, then ran in 2002 in the State Senate as a Democrat. He was 79 at the time, and lost. R - D, D - R, R - ?? Can't decide. Hmm...…...Most people retire at/near 65, but Politicians (even today - HA!)run for office in their 70's. Scary!!

John Ryvold, Jr. lived directly west of John Schofield, commonly known as "The Schofield Family Farm" at Lies & Fair Oaks. Mr. Ryvold's farm was at least 2X the size of Schofield's farm, which was about 90 acres. At the time in 1966 when Debbie was murdered, the Ryvold farm and the Schofield farm were directly south of the River Dell Gravel Co.(quarry, small lake). It would have been extremely easy for LS to dispose of the murder weapon in this area. Unfortunately, this area is all DPC Forest Preserve - West Branch now. Pure speculation on my part, and pure speculation on my part that Schofield probably dispatched a crew early Sat. 02/12/1966 to fix/repair the edge of Lies where Debbie's body was found. Plenty of stone from their personal quarry in the middle of the night - kidding, or am I??

There must have been many "benefits" as the Highway Commissioner of Wayne Township, IL.; including the fishing trip to Canada for JS where he drowned. Would that have been a "union shop" back then?? That explains it. Many different Schofield's, some Klein's, and Ryvold "served", and held the job for MANY YEARS. "It's not what you know, but who you know". "Cover-up"??? I wish I could obtain the list of individuals that served on the preliminary "Grand Jury" trial for Debbie. "Bleep this, expletive that". Could there have been any "agreements" with the surrounding properties of the quarry? Extra "side job/jobs"?
