Long road to justice for family of Kelli O'Laughlin; Murder suspect John Wilson represents self at court

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=8983100

Her poor parents have had to attend 18 court hearings so far, as the suspect is representing himself and filing motion after motion.

excerpt:
"The last court date we had was an all-day event and it took a good two days to recover from that because it's very draining and it's very emotional," Brenda O'Laughlin said.

The O'Laughlins are comforted by their Lyons township community, Kelli's countless friends, and the investigators who made the murder of the
14 year-old girl not only personal, but a priority, as well. Several of the detectives who worked the case attend many of the court hearings simply to offer support.

"We wouldn't be able to stand in the courtroom facing him without their support. It's been wonderful," Brenda O'Laughlin said.

INDIAN HEAD PARK – The murder case against John L. Wilson continues to plod along.

Prosecutors were expected Tuesday to turn over all the records related to the case to the defense attorneys who were reassigned to represent Wilson last month.

No new developments surfaced in court Monday that would delay the start of the trial for the man accused of murdering 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin in her Indian Head Park home.

Cook County Circuit Court Associate Judge John J. Hynes said jury selection will start Sept. 2 in the Bridgeview courthouse.

“We’re ready,” said John O’Laughlin, Kelli’s father. “The state’s ready. The defense is ready. The family is ready.”

I also just wanted to add quickly, that there is a bike path that runs over I294. It is always decorated (using cups I think) to read things like "We Love You Kelli Joy" or "Love KJO 4Ever" with hearts and angels and it's changed just about every time I see it. Which is probably twice a month when I head down to the burbs to visit my family.

Kelli's community has not forgotten her or her family and it brings tears to my eyes every time I go past there and see those heartfelt statements out there for so many to see.

ALWAYS MOO

Both of O'Laughlin's parents testified on Wednesday, describing their experience and how O'Laughlin's mother received disturbing text messages from Kelli's phone the next day.

Brenda O'Laughlin said the day after she found her daughter dead in their southwest suburban home she began getting texts from her daughter's cell phone.

"She wanted me to tell you something before I killed her," one text said. It was followed by another that said, "Think I'm in love with you, Bren."

The stabbing of Kelli was an awful brutal crime. For her mum to find her murdered would have been devastating. But it does not gel to me that the very next day the mum is out having a manicure - when the txts arrive?? Can anyone clarify please, as this is how it reads in the news? I think I would be too shattered to go and get a manicure.

Grief, shock, horror... they do weird things to your mind. For the first few days after my grandson was killed, I baked tons of cookies, cakes, and cobblers. Way more than we could eat, so a lot of it wound up in the garbage. But I couldn't sit still and didn't know what else to do with myself, so I baked.

Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina was one of eight witnesses who testified today at Wilson's murder trial, accused of stabbing the girl to death during a burglary of her Indian Head Park Home Oct. 27, 2011...

Cina answered questions about the final report of Dr. Nancy Jones, who was serving as Cook County Medical Examiner in 2011. With the aid of photos, Cina described in detail a total of 18 injuries and the eight stab wounds in the girls neck, back and chest. He pointed out that one of the wounds, a deep "sharp force injury" to the left breast, was so deep it severed the aorta and was more than likely the fatal wound...

Defense attorney John Paul Carroll questioned Cina about the possibility that the wounds could have been self-inflicted by the girl, as part of his defense strategy to capitalize on Brenda O'Laughlin's 911 call when she came home Oct. 27, 2011, found her daughter lying in a pool of blood, and reporting to police her daughter may have committed suicide. Carroll used a 12-inch wooden ruler to prove his point that some of the back wounds could have been self-inflicted. He repeatedly asked Cina if suicide was a possibility, to which Cina said it was a homicide.

Prosecutors wrapped up their case against John Wilson Jr. on Friday with testimony from cell phone company representatives and an FBI agent who specializes in cellular analysis that put his phone and his victim’s in close proximity...

With maps showing the locations of cellular towers, and phone records, the witnesses tracked the movement of two cell phones, a Cricket phone that prosecutors said was Wilson’s and a Sprint phone they said was Kelli O’Laughlin’s. Kelli’s phone disappeared the day she was killed...

From about 3:50 p.m. Oct. 28 to 2:11 a.m. Oct. 29, both phones had moved from the far South Side of Chicago to the North Side, near Bryn Mawr and Lake Shore Drive, Raschke said. Defense attorney John Paul Carroll asked Raschke whether he was telling the jury the two phones were together? “I cannot say with certainty those phones were together,” Raschke said. But, “on multiple occasions,” he said, the phones were “consistently located in the same general vicinity.”

from the article linked above:
"In arguing for Wilson's innocence, the defense suggested the teen's death was a suicide, not murder. They also argued racism played a role."

What a vile man. His courtroom behavior is disturbing, to say the least.

I'm glad he got the max.
