This is my first post so bear with me. I actually lived in Rockford while attending med school for a few years. I would think that if RPD can pin the mom to a story about her dates and times for when she supposedly dropped the little guy off in Rockford it should be easy to check. There are a ridiculous number of tolls between Rockford/Chicago that are all video monitored and take pics of license plates in case the toll is not paid. (I learned that the hard way when I forgot to go online and pay but I digress). Unfortunately I, like many of you, do not have a good feeling about this case. There are many areas that a small child's body could be hidden including the Rock River and Rock Cut State Park. There are also a ton of rural areas just outside of the city limits. I really hope I'm wrong about this one, but I've lurked for a while and with all the missing toddlers and babies lately there seems to be a terrible pattern.

From what I've gathered, she didn't have a car all that much and she either took the bus or was driven.

It's sad that this child is missing, it's also sad that a baby can be found in a lagoon and no-one has come forward to say they recognise that child. If I had a nephew or a friend with a son with hair like the baby in the picture and I hadn't seen them for a while I would be checking to make sure they were safe. Why do people not care about these people.

I think Kyrian is dead sadly. There is no real reason why he would just disappear. I just hope they find him

Seriously. I couldn't get a hold of my mom yesterday and bargained with myself that if I didn't hear from her by the evening, I would head over to her house and check up on her. But my mind goes to terrible places (probably more-so when I spend more time on WS). And I always think of my family and friends when something strange happens nearby. It makes me sad that either people aren't paying attention, OR in this community people are afraid to come forward.

There are only 11 people looking in on this thread right now :(
If I could do more I would for this little man. He is so adorable. Please be OK somewhere little guy!

I don't get the sense that Rockford LE are urgently searching for an alive child. They've asked the public to call with any information regarding his disappearance but I can't remember any time they've asked for calls if he was seen. I can't see how the remains from the lagoon could be Kyrian because of the length of his hair but it almost feels like both investigations are just waiting for the DNA results before they go forward in any other directions. However I know they could be doing a lot that the public isn't aware of, it just feels like everything is on hold until the results are back IMO.

I am soooo ready for LE to say something about all of this.

It can really only been one of 3 things.

1 - Lanisha picked him up from the friends, something happened and she tried to act like she never picked him up.

2 - Something happened to Kyrian while he was at the friends house.

3 - A man & woman really did come pick him up. If this is true, it has to be someone known to Kyrian and Lanisha. They would have to know where to go and at the very least his name.

I can't think of anymore theories. Can anyone else?

I can't see it being #1, even though I have no idea what really did happen. If she was involved, I'd say it would have to be that the couple really did take him to her. The friend, the friend's father and his girlfriend all have to know how the current story looks, and I don't believe any of them would risk him being charged with murder to protect the mother.

Agreed, I have had nagging feeling from early on that Lanisha was not involved.

The last several days we have been able to put more pieces of the story together so I really think something happened when he was at the care givers home.

I am really curious about the sketch, how accurate the hair is. In Bella Bond's recreation her eyebrows were so light you could barely see them. When she was identified her eyebrows were so dark it almost didn't look like the same girl at first glance. It makes me wonder if the baby in the lagoon is a similar situation.

I'm of the belief that Kyrian's hair is not an issue. The pictures the mother provided were of Kyrian and different ages. In the swing he looks much younger than the picture of him holding onto the stair railing. I think that picture was taken sometime over the summer, before his hair grew.

My hinky meter skyrocketed when the mom insisted that Kyrian's hair was short cropped, way before LE mentioned a possible connection with the lagoon baby.

Someone in the lagoon baby thread posted side-by-side close-up photos of the teeth of the composite sketch and Kyrian's teeth in the steps photo. Both images show a chipped front tooth.

I will be surprised if Kyrian is not lagoon baby.

MOO!

I agree though I hope I'm proved wrong. What am I saying FGS, how could anyone do this to a little child and why ???

Don't LE always refer to "Motive, Method etc" - I just can't comprehend any motive for this type of crime.

I hate to think I'm in a world where this sort of person exists,

The most recent pics of him were taken on August 5th, his birthday. He has very short hair. Could it really grow that fast?

I think his hair could grow fast. From that to a month later. I know what my toddlers hair is like.

How often do sketch artists take guesses on things like hair style? Would hair stay in twisties like that after being in the water for a while? Does hair grow out after death?

I'v always thought the Lagoon baby is Kyrain. As time goes on I still think this is the case. There just seems to be a lack of urgency and information, no real call for help from the police. I don't see how they can say he's not been abducted. He's not in his mothers care, she has custody of him. She's saying he's missing. Unless of course the police know he wasn't taken at all, and he has met with foul play. So so sad.

I really do see similarities in the 2 pictures. The difference in the hair doesn't really put me off. This was a month this woman hadn't seen her son. I think children's hair can grow pretty quickly. The people who were looking after him might of done it without his mother knowing.

Hopefully there will be some news on this case soon, one way or another. If poor Lagoon baby isn't Kyrain then hopefully they will release some more information and ask for the publics help.

Those pictures convinced me.

I read that some cells would be alive for a few days after death, but the skin begins to retract and degrade and the hair appears to get longer after death.

His caretaker's hair is done in a similar way, I noticed.

Which to me would make even more sense why Kyrian's hair is different from the picture on the steps. I know I'm always amazed by how often my husband gets haircuts. his hair grows quickly in a month.

  • #316
I don't think the hair is an issue either. Because of the characteristics of at least some AAs' hair, his hair may not be as short as it appears. His hair is buzzed on the sides, but doesn't appear buzzed down on top. If the hair was damp and more relaxed, it might have been possible to pull up the little twists seen in the sketch. All MOO and conjecture, and I hope I am wrong.

Okay, i looked it up and hair grows around half an inch per month. African American hair may grow a little less quicky than this, and will appear to grow even less quickly because it's curly. It may appear longer after death because of the shrinkage of the skin but I really don't think it could look that much longer, because if you pull one of your hairs out there's only a couple of mm more hair under the skin. So I really don't think his hair could grow long enough to put in twisties in a month.

However, hair falls out during decomposition. I have no idea how long it would take underwater, but is it possible that the hair on lagoon baby Doe's head fell out, and forensic sketch artist just used artistic licence to create a hairstyle?

Kyrian's mother says she was moving apartments between Marion, Iowa to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She needed someone to watch her son. Her best friend's father offered to take Kyrian Knox in Rockford. She says she dropped him off in Rockford around August 18th and then went to Chicago for a visit. Clannish Knox says on her way back to Iowa for work she visited Kyrian.

"We stopped in Rockford checked in on the boys, everything was fine," says Lanisha Knox.

I would like to know the date that they stopped in Rockford to check on the boys and everything was fine.
Right now we are looking at anywhere from 8/18-9/18... knowing that date would narrow things down, dontcha think?

That's what I wonder. How many sketches really look exactly like the person?

I'd love to know this too! If I knew that this WAS the ACTUAL hair style of wee Charming (that's what I call him in my head, and I can't bear to type 'the lagoon baby' anymore) then I wouldn't be considering Kyrian as a possible match.

I have a very sad feeling there was artistic licence applied. :(

eta... then again, he went back and fixed the teeth. So who knows.
