I'm referring to the way he held his arm out and away from his body before he got shot. He was holding the knife upright. Odd position for someone holding a closed knife.
Do you have a link for what you are talking about? A still shot would be even better, or a time during which I can see what you are describing. tia

With all due respect to the mayor (.. do not know the man but am familiar with the name..) ; firing the chief of police is like seeing someone with a gaping wound and bringing a band-aid.
Like, " ..See there. Everything will be better now, I've fixed it !..."
Any time there's a cover up, it puts every policeman/woman's life in danger ; imo.
I realize that's a broad generalization; but incompetency and certainly illegal behavior must be dealt with.
Does this Rahm realize he holds lives in his hands with his elected position ?
If he has participated in a cover up, he risks losing the trust of the citizens and certainly makes it more dangerous for le !

OT, but I find it very odd that you're referring to a public figure -- one with which you say you're only familiar by name -- by his first name. It really doesn't seem at all consistent with anything. So why does he deserve this sign of familiarity? I can't help but think it's some form of insult.

R. Emanuel chose Garry McCarthy , and it can't be pleasant to have to let him go.
Not trying to insult R.E., sometimes it's best to let the facts stand for themselves. And either agree or disagree.
It doesn't help to read the comments in many news sites as they're very critical of R.E.'s term as mayor.

That's a serious accusation ; I'd imagine he has evidence.
Consider this is from the DM.
The Chicago PD can get the trust of the public back ; imo. But they need to come clean with any and all scandals within the department .
Just let the public know what other offenses have been committed by le and deal with it.

Not only is it the Daily Mail, but it's the Daily Mail picking up on some social media in which an anonymous bicycle cop makes an off the cuff statement that someone records on their iPhone.
Color me skeptical, but I somehow think that bike cops aren't privy to all of the inner workings of the mayor's office. I suspect, and I think any reasonable person would, that he has no evidence whatsoever (but prejudice is another matter). It was irresponsible for the DM to post something like that in the first place, and I don't see why we should be assigning it any credibility or granting it any publicity here.
Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez said Tuesday that a 3-inch knife with it's blade folded into its pocket was recovered from the scene. ​

I think this video captures a bit more of McDonald walking before he got shot. It is clear he is holding his arm out, away from his body. A 3-inch closed pocket knife would fit in and be covered by his hand. If closed and covered in his hand, there would not be any glare reflecting from the knife handle. The position he was holding the knife and the glare is an indication to me that the knife blade was exposed. I'm sure we will eventually know if the knife was open or closed.

It isn't my opinion the knife blade was open. According to Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez the knife blade was closed. She stated so in her live presser announcing her decision to charge Van Dyke with murder. Links upthread.
Sorry, I can't find the Cook County State Attorney's live presser in the link you provided. I was able to find snippets of statements from Alvarez,but not the presser in it's entirety. No mention of the knife being closed in the statements I heard. After watching the video from beginning to end several times, it would be very hard to convince me the knife was closed. Guess we need to agree to disagree.

I found the full presser. Times I post are for the MSNBC video, not the time stamps AA is mentioning for the police dash cam video.
At 3:50 AA states "As he passes one of the officers he raises his right hand and a knife is visible. A few seconds later officer Van Dyke and his partner arrive and park their vehicle"......
Based on the above information Van Dyke had not yet arrived on the scene when McDonald raised his right hand and a knife was visible. We can scratch that as a potential reason why Van Dyke was allegedly in fear for his life. He couldn't fear something that occurred before he arrived on the scene.
