Two men who said they were wrongly targeted as suspects in the shooting of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz before authorities determined the officer killed himself have sued the village and several law enforcement officials.
Preston Shrewsbury and Manuel Vargas say their civil rights were violated by officers who repeatedly searched the men's home without a warrant, illegally detained them and demanded they provide DNA samples in the days after Gliniewicz's death on Sept. 1.
The men say authorities continued to pursue and harass them despite early evidence pointing to "a strong possibility that (Gliniewicz's) death was ... suicide," said the suit, filed Monday in federal court.
Gliniewicz was found shot to death in a remote part of the lakeside community after telling a dispatcher that he was going to pursue three subjects on foot, describing them as one black man and two white men.
