To me, saying someone was murdered makes it sound like a deliberate act.

Revising that to instead say he was killed, sounds almost like it happened due to a struggle or the circumstances at the scene, but not necessarily an intentional act.

I guess there is a difference, as slight as it may be.

I also suspect that struggle may have been the source of the DNA, sounds as though there may have been a wrestling match going on before the gun went off.

Murder IS homicide, but not all homicides are murders. Struggle, maybe. He said that anyone who they can think of who may have had physical contact with him or his equipment has been or will be swabbed to eliminate. I don't know what thing they found on Friday at the scene (so it wouldn't be the gun) was an item with DNA on it , but he DID say something about ballistics testing in the same paragraph so I wonder if the thing was a bullet or a casing? I hope they are investigating everyone who works at the nearby company whose surveillance cameras weren't working.

This all happened in a swamp area. Shouldn't there be footprints left behind to where they can take casts of the patterns on the soles of the shoes and match them up to certain types of footwear and manufacturers ?

Nothing I've heard so far even addresses footprints left at the scene or the tread patterns left behind.

Now THAT might be a good tip to give to the public, seeing how they could examine the shoes in their own home for matches.

Yes, and three people went home with muddy shoes, unless these individuals lived together or alone, someone I would think would have noticed. Or if one of the people tossed out his shoes, someone might notice/ask about a pair of shoes missing.

I have suddenly had a melt down over this case...I can't imagine his poor wife not knowing what happened. My husband just retired from LE and I can't begin to even imagine what she is going through.

What really is the difference in the meaning? I really don't understand, because for me it basically means the same thing? Why would he say "found killed" instead of "found murdered."

The difference between murder and killing has to do with how someone died, the intentions behind their death and if it was premeditated or not. Then there are different degrees of murder too.
Accidents kill people. When a true accident occurs without any malice or wrongdoing involved there won't be charges brought versus when someone is intentionally mowed down. Or it may be determined a homicide if a driver was under the influence or texting making them negligent.

Heck, it gets confusing. Hope I'm making sense!

Boo-hoo, I didn't know the Crime Library link was no longer available on the Internet.
I wanted to link it here because it was a good source with definitions of all things related to crime.

Autopsy report. I believe that they DO have the report, but they said that they are not releasing it for public consumption because it is very relevant to the ongoing investigation. If it is true that he was shot twice, somebody must have leaked that information....JMO

For anyone interested, the minister is Rev. Lyle Kaufman. He was actually an interim pastor of the Presbyterian church I attended when I was young, and my mom emailed me during the funeral yesterday asking if I remembered him and spoke of him very fondly.

Thank you for adding information about the Reverend. I actually felt negligent when I didn't include his name (which I failed to write down). I'm not sure if he was formally introduced when he took the podium or if I just missed it.
Clearly he chose the right vocation imo (or God chose him!).
Because of his repeated use of "Amen", I would have guessed Baptist - lol!

That sermon was the only part of the service that I watched. My immediate thought was the same as yours, wondering why parenting and children and forgiveness of their misdeeds was chosen as the subject to elaborate on. I too, thought maybe I was reading too much into it. It WAS at a high school, though. But I wondered If it was a subliminal hint to parents to tell LE what they know,if they know something about the crime. JMO JMO

I'm posting out of order which I'll correct after this response.
But thanks for letting me know you were thinking the same thing because it helps me decide if I'm reading too much into things or dramatizing or something.

Interesting analysis. Three youngsters looking to score dope out fox a veteran officer who happens to train other officers in police tactics. Then a young woman calls and says she saw them and leads the police on the wrong direction.
Two white guys and a black guy. Don't sound like typical gang members.
Homeland security wants to analyze the security tapes before anyone else.
Frankly, I am suspicious about most everything and everyone involved, especially the girl who made that call.

Wasn't the woman a dispatcher - the person who took CJG's radio call?
Did I miss something which wouldn't be unusual.

I thought the woman referred to was the one in Volo who made the false report to 911 leading to the middle of the night search....

Yes, a nanny from nearby Vernon Hills, as reported in MSM, responsible for the mass response in the Volo/Lakemoor area just south of Fox Lake.

You're late to the meltdown stage!

Please try not to take my forthcoming comment critically because I mean it as an observation and consider human nature (we are defensive and guard our own).
That said, when a woman is found dead and foul play is suspected, LE wastes no time contacting family members sometimes grilling them to death.

When asked if family members have any insight into the case, the Cmdr. replied that emotions are involved so LE hasn't questioned or really talked to them at length so as to allow them space and time to grieve.
The public didn't need to hear that courtesy pointed out because civilians aren't given the same courtesy when faced with similar situations (suspicious death of family member).

I'm just saying, for public relations sake, know your audience.

Oh, I thought it was determined she was prone to hysterics and had taken similar actions before but those hadn't resulted in a $75,000. tax payer hit by triggering a misguided response.

Quoting self - I'm referring to the initial call from the Lt. to the dispatcher.

The incident in Volo is unrelated to the actual case imo.
The woman needs mental help and should not be watching children imo.

How many times have we heard all warning signs pointing to an unbalanced individual were present before sometime really bad happened. Too many times.

Do hunters load a rifle one bullet at a time using their bare hands?
The Cmdr. explained deer paths within the heavily wooded area.
Would it be illegal for hunters to be out on September 1st?
It sounds as if the Lt. actually saw the three though given he described them by stating race.

So much for the theory that unseen hunters mistook him for a deer. The hunters wouldn't be visible in that case.
Why did the Cmdr. bring hunting and deer paths up though?

How much trouble can one be in if caught hunting out of season?

Good to know your husband made it to retirement and is well. I appreciate his devotion and service very much and don't want to leave an impression I'm callous.
My husband retired from the army after serving almost thirty-three years.
Military spouses endure similar stress but it ebbs and flows depending on what is going on at the time.

Over time there have been several cases involving soldiers or military personnel.
The first time I ran across one of these cases my reactions were highly defensive and I recognized it and mentioned my responses to my husband.
He calmed me by pointing out there is a percentage of bad apples in every batch.
Since then, I've been able to keep in mind that people are people no matter their profession or status.

I'm so proud of those who serve our country in any capacity and hate it when the bad apples surface. Another way to look at it though is that they need to be weeded out.

I sadly but honestly think that he brought up hunters because it's a possibility, along with absolutely anything else at this point. I always like to think that LE always knows more than they're saying, and that they're always about to break the case wide open. But I don't think that's the case here - I think they're following up on all leads and doing everything they can, but I don't think they have ANY solid idea of what happened or who is responsible.

Not yet, anyway. I think over the last week they tried to make it seem as though they were on the verge of solving it (with all their "significant" evidence talk on CNN and others) as a tactic to try and spook the suspects, but it didn't work. Now I think they're just stumped - still working hard...but stumped.

I braced myself for the no new news presser today. My meltdown (or feeling down about the lack of a break in the case) happened Friday.

Considering the timeline combined with technology and the number of professionals present, this is one strange case.

Here is what they had to say about the videos last week:

“We have images of people that we believe are subjects that we’d be interested in talking to,” said Lake County Major Crime Task Force commander George Filenko, describing the footage as “a mix of videos from residences and businesses.”
When a reporter asked whether the subjects are two white men and a black man — the only description police have released of the possible killers — Filenko said at a news conference: “There’s a commonality there, and there’s an interest in those videos.”

http://whotv.com/2015/09/04/fox-lake-officers-killing-police-to-check-various-videos/

It seems to me that last week, Filenko was strongly implying that the videos showed two white men and a black man. So these videos that apparently showed two white men and a black man are nothing but a false alarm? How many trios of two white men and one black man would have been around this area at that specific time? I'm not saying it's impossible for it to happen, but it's quite a coincidence for two white men and one black man to be caught on video in the area at that time, only to apparently have nothing to do with the case.....when the only lead up to today was that authorities were looking for two white men and one black man.
