Great protection in most situations, but up close especially during a struggle there is a lot of the torso exposed.

A Police Officer wearing a bullet proof vest died from a ricochet bullet while on a firing range

Possibly, but he did claim to see 3 people. Kids could have run and drug purveyor could have ambushed him? JMO

I think he saw a couple of kids he recognized. But I don't think the kids killed him. I think maybe a drug dealer or a felon that was hiding from an open warrant was there at the time. And he had his guard down because he thought it was just kids smoking pot before school---and did not know of the danger involving the 3rd perp. JMO

That really makes the most sense to me. If this turns out to be a suicide I'm going to be shocked, stranger things have happened, but it just seems so strange that a person would go through, in my eyes, such an odd plan to kill themselves.

The vest shot is out there, but remains unconfirmed by authorities. It does make a big difference in the scenario, if it did happen. At least, it makes a big difference to me. JMO

Does anyone else remember at the beginning them stating that toxicology reports might give answers and everyone was like????
Also I hear a lit about where was he between 6 and 8. I would imagine he went to the gym a lot? He was in amazing shape

Yup. Maybe two kids were there looking to buy or sell some drugs. And a 3rd person was there to buy or sell---but this person may have had an open warrant or was on probation---and an arrest could send him back to prison for years.

the LT might have seen 3 people and recognized 2 of them as students ---so he decided to go ahead before back up arrived because he thought it was going to be a minor thing. Maybe a joint or two and that is it. This is a small community and he has 4 sons. He probably knows most of the families and considers the students as 'family friends.' I don't think he expected a shoot out to occur that morning.

My problem with speculation is this. We are all free to speculate based on what we know. We are very early in the investigation at this stage. Cases like this take time and patience. I would imagine they are looking at every angle and trying to figure out what happened. I don't think the public is in imminent danger. I think it was wrong for the coroner to speak publicly out of turn and increase speculation and distrust in LE. There is absolutely no reason for the public to know every detail at this time. Let them do their job. JMO

Steroids?

Steroids?
Well not sure how steroid use would necesarily answer any questions. It was just a strange remark so early on and then I discounted it. Maybe accident?

Agree that it sure doesn't seem like he expected any major event. Do we know yet, whether or not it is expected that local PD wear vests every day or if it is optional? JMO....someone a while back remarked that his vest was in most photos of him in uniform.

Thank-you for bringing that up. I keep thinking about that.

I don't place much importance on how matter of fact and calm Lt. Gliniewicz sounded when he radioed in. It seems to be what they always do. I don't think his tone of voice says much about his level of suspicion, his calling for backup says more.

Even the dispatcher sounds remarkably calm after the Officer down call, it's what they do. In my line of work during an emergent situation if anything I probably sound more serene than usual.

Steroids never entered my mind.

Respectfully, there has been a continuous drip, drip, drip, of information being published citing "sources close to the investigation" which are not coming from the coroner, Rudd. Rudd spoke out to debunk that information. Where are those unconfirmed statements coming from? We know very few facts and details that are confirmed by NAMED authorities. The rest is anyone's guess. “CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Hundreds of people turned out Friday night for a giant fundraiser to benefit the family of Fox Lake Police Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz.

<modsnip>
*

“The benefit included a live auction and silent auction, as well as raffles.

“Honestly we are looking to bring the community together, and raise a whole ton of money for a family that really deserves it,” said Jamie Deehr, the General Manager of KC’s Cabin."

*
<modsnip>

mayor also said he was more than frustrated by speculation around town and questions raised by the media about the possibility that Gliniewicz could have committed suicide.

“It angers me, there's no indication at all that it was a suicide,” Schmit said, adding, “To besmirch this good man's reputation on pure speculation just angers me, it's not fair to him, it's not fair to our town, it's not fair to the police department.”

Seems to me that suicide is a bad word with some people? So what if its suicide? Lots of good men have committed suicide, IMO.

I'm quite certain any gun shot residue on LT. CG's hands would not be released to the public. Though, if there was none on Lt. CG's hands suicide would have likely already been ruled out.

 • #1,117
Suicide is probably the last thing that anyone who knew him would have expected from him, but a proper investigation cannot be compromised by investigators emotions. However he died is a tragedy, but I think that a lot of people feel that suicide is shameful and some think "sinful". Suicide is a way out of the pain of feeling hopeless, about one's future or beating a disease, among others. The sooner it can logically, forensically, and with evidence be ruled out, the better for the comfort of his loved ones. But let the facts speak for themselves, whatever they turn out to be. JMO........just being repulsed by the idea is not evidence.

Bell schedules for Grant High School in Fox Lake.

1st period starts at 7:40 am so it's unlikely these were teenagers on their way to school. ETA, if teenagers were involved. That is speculation at this time.

http://www.grantbulldogs.org/domain/246

There is a late start at 9:40 but it's unlikley imo teens would be on their way to school approximately two hours before their first class starts.

“As a task force continues to investigate how Gliniewicz was killed, FOX 32 News has learned the fatal shot to the torso that killed him was fired from above his bullet proof vest in a downward direction. A second shot glanced off his vest, and that shell casing found a considerable distance from his body. Police recovered Gliniewicz’s weapon at the scene, but would not say if it was the gun that killed him.

Ballistic testing is still being done, as is DNA testing on some evidence recovered from the scene.”

How tall was this officer? I am not sure why he would have his gun drawn. The investigators would know by now if there was residue on his hands. I do wonder if he was chasing people and shot himself by tripping or stumbling.

I think that the speculation by the media is seriously enhanced/compounded by the misinformation the police (gun stolen, etc) put forth. Thus, creating the atmosphere that is "besmirching" the officer's name.

Release the information or don't but you can't have it both ways or you get this kind of situation.
