Why does it have to be anything going on prior to that lengthy meeting? If LT had planned to commit suicide, then he had the foresight to know someone else would have to lead the Explorers program.

The lengthy meeting 18 hours or so prior to being shot with his own gun at close range with forensic experts not being able to rule out the possibility his hands were on his service weapon when it was fired. He knew he wasn't going to be around to continue with the Explorers group.

I do think that he still cared about it. It was his "baby". JMO

Could it be that he planned on using vacation time for last few weeks?
If he did plan on suicide why didn't he do it sooner?
I have no idea why he planned the date he did.
I doubt he had all that much vacation time saved up with as much out off town races he did.

RSBM. I had given a little thought to the date thing and the only conclusion I could come up with was he completed the month of August and never started his first shift of September. There is a month end something about this, but what exactly, IDK.

Of course he cared about it. FWIW, I do not think the meeting with the mayor would have occured if he did not care about it. I think it was the sole reason for the meeting. To give the Lt some comfort to an unknown question when whatever answers he had for himself in other area's were satisfactory to him.

The meeting is fishy for sure, if only for the timing. He meets with the mayor and is dead the next day? Is that correct? hmm.

  • #706
Because they met does not constitute a meeting to me. jmo idk
With govt officials if you want to meet and not have it considered a meeting you best do it down at the local Starbucks.

Don't forget his very good friend the chief just left the week before too.

Yeah, but the last few days on a job are often different. If he did commit suicide he was really cutting it close.

Cutting it close to what?

Maybe he chose the date he did because he had taken care of what he needed to do by making it clear he wished for the Explorer program to continue. It appears that was the only final business he was concerned about at the time. Whatever other business he had, it seemed to be in order for him. At least according to his plans of making it appear to be a homicide, IF he did commit suicide.

ETA: His long term peer, the chief just had a final day the workday prior to his meeting with the mayor. He knew things would be changing and it wasn't necessary for him to be there for those changes. He just didn't want to see the Explorer program end upon his being gone.

He hasn't turned in any paperwork not that retirement takes more than five minutes but I dont think anyone else thought he was on his last few days so his days would have been no different on the job.

True, but reportedly they were very good friends. JMO

We also have no idea what other things he may have closed up and prepared in the days before. We only know about the mayor because the mayor mentioned it. Joe might have met with other people and they either didn't realize that meeting was closure for him or they just haven't chosen to talk about it.

I missed the no paperwork on the planned retirement, is there a link for that?

I wonder if his wife did....just because of her comment "why didn't he just walk away" Maybe she was referring to the event itself, but I took it to mean that she knew he was retiring, so why prolong the service. JUST MY OPINION

True but in that capacity they still would be subject to records requests as govt officials meeting on govt property. The mayor's calender and people who meet with is supposed to be preserved. So it is official. Even if you are friends you had better discuss friendly stuff away so there is no conflict or prying eyes.

I know grieving people often don't think straight but that phrase just made no sense to me.
What was he supposed to be walking away from the day before?

Behan and Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit also offered some clarity about whether Gliniewicz had been planning to retire at the time he was killed. Both the former chief and the mayor said Gliniewicz had talked about retiring soon but had not submitted any formal paperwork to that effect. Schmit said the officer had discussed the prospect of retiring at the end of the year but had also considered moving that up to the end of September.

NOT sure, but I think walker 007 has sleuthed and reported village notes with links. I believe (as far as I know) that there is no online mention of the village receiving retirement paperwork for his upcoming retirement. Please correct me if I am mistaken. JMO
