IL - Violent teen takeover in Chicago organized on social media, 15 April 2023 *arrests*

  • #21
Their parents need to invest in their kids, that would be a start. Victim support is prob the best in the country, including financial support that a lot of places don’t implement.

Right on mental health though.

We have curfew laws, but where the heck are these parents? Had a good talk about that today with a guy who has lived in the city his whole life, and raised 5 kids. He proposed fining the parents for their kid’s actions. I’m down.

Something has to be done.
You just brough back memories of my teen years. The curfew was 10 pm and if kids weren't home by then they could get hauled in to the PD and their parents would have to come pick them up. Nobody wanted that.
Are curfews just no longer enforced?

Absolutely not. Bigger fish to fry with all the other stuff.

Not enough cops anyway, and we’re losing more by the day. The thinking is to wait it out and see what the mayor does, then we might see an absolute disaster.

Curfews just aren't effective- youth programs and opportunities such as summer job programs are needed.

McDonald’s is always hiring. They pay twice, including inflation, from what I made at that age.

Clearly that doesn't sound like it's not enough if Mayor Johnson is proposing 60k new summer jobs

These kids need parents, not the government. Have you ever talked to them?

Some people are saying they need to round up the parents and get THEM in trouble, but considering that a lot of those young people are 18-plus in age, that's not going to work so well, I fear.

Wow. I’ve always wanted to visit Chicago so I had really been hoping for things to improve over there.

It’s difficult to get a sense of how old most of them are from videos but from those I’ve seen they usually seem more grown than not.

Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson said it best on Twitter where he said that what those teens did was unacceptable. However, the solution is not to demonize teenagers, but rather create spaces for them to gather safely and responsibly under adult guidance/supervision.
As if that hasn't been attempted before?

Where is he going to find those jobs? Is he going to call upon the job fairy? What is supposed to happen if it's nothing but make-work programs? What if nobody applies for them, or if they do, the jobs are so unpleasant that nobody would choose to do them anyway?

Where did you live, that had a 10pm curfew? This almost sounds like a small town on a weekday.

It was a small town. ;)
And I'm old (er) so it was quite a while ago.

It's interesting to me that jobs are an issue for teens. Where I live there's a "now hiring" sign on almost every business. I'm sure it varies by location but here in So Cal the signs are everywhere.

Kids who would commit acts like this are not interested in summer jobs, mental health nor youth programs. They want to commit violence. These are just excuses imo.
I would bet it was mostly done for social media posts.

I remember that one -- "Won't you please come to Chicago..." Some time ago, but it was good music. Still is, this boomer says.

IMO, those signs are almost everywhere -- big cities and small towns.

I am tired of the blame being put on the school system, the police and the govt. Put the blame where it belongs on the kids and the parents.Take responsibility for your actions instead of making excuses.
Plenty of kids out there in the same situation but do not go out and destroy their community.

Ive seen the footage of the young woman getting attacked and it was frightening.
The Illinois Restaurant Association is not happy and wants to meet with city leaders to find some sort of workable plan.

The CPD says that they actively review social media and that they will step up resources when they identify target areas

The mayor has offered that many teens were out due to the nice weather but a few came with different agenda's.
She also tweeted
"We have made historic investments in city youth programming & supporting community-based organizations to create year-round safe spaces for our youth."
the state senator said this
"Our city must work together to create spaces for youth to gather safely and responsibly, under adult guidance and supervision,"Since I’m a glutton for punishment and I’m sure I’m gonna get the most unhinged, crime weirdo replies but: I would look at the behavior of young people as a political act and statement," Peters wrote in a Twitter post Sunday. "It’s a mass protest against poverty and segregation. Rest in peace to my mentions."
and the mayor elect said
it is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities,"
The abc article is really good and worth a read.
In the meantime I'm really hoping that there is an answer to be found to eliminate this type of behavior for the residents of Chicago.
