While this is frustrating, I’m more angry that the grandfather and press got together. Are they trying to sabotage this case?!? (Not making an accusation, just pointing out that they aren’t helping LE by going against wishes)

Despite the date at the top being today’s date, the article itself has the date in February 2017. So it’s an old article.
Can’t even trust the press. Like we need anymore confusion around here!

I haven't read the book or seen the movie but this might help:
Why 'The Shack' 2017 film was mentioned in reference to unsolved Delphi murders
Thanks PommyMommy. After reading the article, I got the impression this guy could be a serial killer.

I know...everyone says no. But he was comfortable with killing two little girls at once. Surely he came prepared and LE says Libby fought hard. There are many serial killers on the loose in the United States. He may be one of those many. Delphi may have their own SK.

A small city near me just convicted a SK living among them. An older guy who had killed several women. He is on death row. Don’t remember details. As I said, that stuff gives me nightmares. But it does happen.

And since this is a younger guy, this may have been his fantasy and he may have already killed somewhere else. I hope LE gets him soon.

LE said they cleared all local sex offenders early on. I don't know if that guy is local but since they first believed he lived outside of Delphi but in a nearby area I would think they checked him out too.
I have found that LE is a lot more thorough than we think they are. We just don't hear about it until much later since they can't reveal those details during an investigation. Jmo

It was like 40-something degrees!! I know I am from new Orleans where people will be breaking out coats at 60, but would yall not wear a jacket in the 40s? In the woods? That's a real question. In the 40s here, lots of people dont even want to walk out the door because they say it's too cold. I love it, but it is chilly!! So, I'm always confused by people thinking his jacket (not even a full winter coat) is too much. It seems very normal and appropriate, to me.
Everyone is different. Born and raised in the Midwest, yes, I would likely be dressed as warmly as he is, especially higher up on a bridge where whatever wind exists will lower the temp further.

My family was given the book when a family member was murdered. I read it but it was full of triggers for me but my son said it helped him deal with our tragedy. I can't really explain it before bedtime :( When Carter mentioned it, it kind of gut punched me.
I’m so sorry. I don’t understand how a book about a serial killer can help someone forgive and move on. I guess I just couldn’t!

I saw the movie last year. It is about one man's journey of redemption.
The main character has lost touch with God. He was abused as a child by his father and as a father himself he is struggling with the death of his young daughter, who was brutally murdered by a serial killer in a shack.
Many years later he receives an invitation in the mail to go back to the shack, where he meets the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
God, who is a woman, teaches him many things.
She shows him that even those who are not close to God can find Him approachable and involved, and although He loves all living things, evil can find it's way in the world. She teaches him that good can come out of tragedy. She shows him that people are not the ones in control, and we can find comfort in relinquishing all control to God. She shows him the importance of forgiveness.
It is basically an inspiring movie with religious themes. I think Carter referred to the movie as part of an explanation as to why bad things happen to good people, and to send a message to the killer and anyone who knows he is the killer. Imo
Thanks. I just don’t get why he mentioned it. Maybe it wasn’t for the killer. Maybe he wanted to help the families accept and forgive for the shocks that are to come. Especially when they have had that first sketch in their heads for two years!

Wow, I guess I had better stop talking to myself!
I don't know about his having mental illness, but I am assuming this guy has got to be pretty twisted to do such a horrible, sickening thing.
I gathered from the way Carter described the crime scene, (How you left them in the woods that day is not what they are experiencing now) that it was particularly disturbing. Maybe it was very brutal or sadistic.
At the very least the killer has a dark side that he has managed to hide from those around him. Jmo
The timeline does not seem to allow for the killer to have much time abducting and then killing to young girls.

I think this is very close to being what happened. So, what NOW has come up that made them realize this terrible error?

My guess, a family member or friend noticed over time that the person hasn't been the same since the murders, maybe made some off hand or troubling statements to them. So they reported it. The police may not feel its enough for arrest but enough to change the direction of the case.

I can’t stop thinking about the press conference Monday. It was announced days earlier so one would think it would be carefully planned and scripted down to the T. But the actual press conference turned out to be a hot mess. Was this an act of brilliance? Or a screw up?

Supt Carter is the head of ISP. He's THE guy. But he could barely contain his – what – rage? Rage is what I sensed. Sure, the perp is a horrible person, of course. But get it together, man, you’re a professional! No matter what is going on behind the scenes that we are not privy to, Carter was supposed to relay critical information to the public. I am sure his emotion was real, I am not doubting that, but did he allow his emotion to overrun and obfuscate the press conference on purpose? Did they release misleading information about the vehicle and confuse the public about the sketches on purpose? I can’t get my head around that press conference which was like nothing I’ve ever seen.

I think in some states therapists are mandated reporters when it comes to any homicide or sex crime if there has been a specific person and instance conveyed. If someone just said they did the crime without specifics they cannot report in a lot of cases.

This is true, but only in the case of future criminal behavior. A client could confess to a crime, even murder, that occurred in the past and would still be protected by confidentiality in most cases.

Yes I know it's just an example of why anytime children are murdered the first place I'd look is the church

So, exactly how many children do you know of who have been murdered by someone in authority from a church??

The Shack is on Netflix here in the U.K I don’t know if it’s on in the U.S region too. It is a puzzler why it was mentioned and it’s significance.

(church link)

If you think you have a tip, report it to police. It is not that unusual for a teen ministry program to reach out to teens on their social media preferences. Nothing will be gained by hinting on this forum.

I've been thinking about the unibomber and his brother, who turned him in. I listened to a fascinating interview with the brother who described the process that he went through. First was the inkling, the hint of recognition that his brother had some similarities to the perp. Then these were discounted as a bit crazy. But then the nagging, more denial,... until finally the brother hunted down some old writings by his brother. Comparing the writings, he knew pretty surely that his brother was the unibomber. But then he realized he had to tell his mother, ... Nevertheless made the call to authorities and turned his brother in.

Maybe BG has a family member who is going through something similar right now. I hope they make the call.

I actually think Carter just happened to watch the movie "The Shack" because it was on Lifetime Movie Channel the night before the press conference. Comcast/Xfinity is the cable provider locally. It was aired at 8 pm Sunday night (4/21/2019). It is also available "On Demand" to rent or buy.
