IN - Emma Sweet, 2, (died), Dad and truck found, Bartholomew Co, 24 Nov 2021 *arrest*

  • #201
Court documents say Sweet told a detective he put Emma on the roof or hood of the truck, then held her for a while before later waking up and she was gone.

Police spoke with a woman who said she last saw Sweet on Wednesday, Nov. 24. When police later asked Sweet about this, he admitted to using meth and marijuana before going to the casino in Shelbyville on Friday, Nov. 24.

Preliminary findings from Emma's autopsy report could not determine if hypothermia or drowning was the cause of her death.

Ok wait a minute - Emma was last seen with JS on Wednesday afternoon (Per Mom). So where was Emma during all this time? Who had her while JS went to the casino?
What time was he at the casino Friday, because the duck hunters found him at 6:00 AM?

Further, if Emma drowned, there would be water in her lungs. The autopsy seems to not have found that? If he went to the casino, I'm now wondering if Emma died much earlier than we were led to believe, and it wasn't in the White River?

Sure wish someone would publish the probable cause affidavit, the media is quoting it so I assume they have it in hand?

If you watch the video it says that he dropped the woman off at the casino.
He admitted to using meth and marijuana before he dropped the woman off.
The creep was high on drugs when he went into the river with his daughter.
People are saying how much he loved his daughter, too bad he loved drugs more.

Thanks for clarifying that detail

My son's college friend had a job doing security at a casino in Santa Barbara. He said one of the worst things about his job, was finding children and BABIES left in cars while parents were inside gambling. He said it happened way too often and he had kid's toys in his truck to give to them while his partners went into the casinos to find the families. :(

Do they mean Friday Nov 26? So they went missing Wednesday? Then Thursday they were reported missing. Then Friday they (assuming Emma was with him) went to a casino? Into the river shortly after that and found?

Why does the timeline seem so wonky?

How were he and Emma reported missing Thursday if he went to a casino on Friday?
If he really went to the casino he would be on camera. There are cameras everywhere. It would also show if Emma was with him at the casino.

From the link above that Knox posted:
She told the police that Emma was fine when the two left.
Sweet told investigators he took a wrong turn after leaving the Shelbyville casino, drove around in some cornfields and ended up in the White River.

From looking at map locations, I'm having a hard time buying his statement about making a wrong turn and ending up in the river.

Lots more info in this article, explains about casino and why he had Emma with him.

Detectives spoke with a Jodi Miller who they believe is the last person known to have been with Jeremy and Emma Sweet before they were reported missing, the affidavit states. Miller said she was at the Shelbyville casino with Jeremy Sweet and Greg Lawson in the early morning hours of Nov. 24 and arrived at Jeremy’s house later in the morning, according to the affidavit.

They picked up Emma because Linsey Sweet had to go to work and they all went to Miller’s house. Sweet gave Miller a ride to work at Vernet Corp. because her car was broken down, the affidavit states. Miller told investigators that Sweet dropped her off at around 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24 and that Emma was fine when the father and daughter left, which was the last time she saw them.

In a follow-up interview on Nov. 27, Sweet told detectives he had used methamphetamine and marijuana before going to the Shelbyville casino, the affidavit states.

Sweet said after he dropped Miller off, he took a wrong turn and ended up driving around in some fields, eventually driving on top of an embankment where he could see the river, the affidavit states.

“Jeremy said that water was coming inside the truck, so he put Emma on the hood or roof of the truck. Jeremy said that he and Emma fell into the water and he climbed back up on top of the truck. He said that Emma’s coat was wet, so he took it off of her. He claimed that they were both on top of the truck overnight and the last time he saw Emma, she was on top of the truck yelling for her Mom. Jeremy said that he held her for awhile, but he later put her on top of the roof of the truck by herself because they fell into the water earlier when they were both on the roof. Jeremy said he woke up at some point and Emma was gone,” the affidavit states.
...
It was still light outside when the two ended up in the water, Sweet told detectives. In this version, Sweet said he and Emma got on top of the roof of the vehicle and fell into the water a couple of times, the affidavit states. Sweet said he removed Emma’s coat because it was soaking wet, but then fell asleep sometime during the evening of Nov. 24, and when he woke up, Emma and her coat were gone, according to the affidavit.

He later told detectives that Emma fell into the water with him on the morning of Nov. 25, and he fell asleep and woke up the night of Nov. 25 and Emma and her coat were gone, according to the affidavit.

My bolding. I'm reminded of what happened to little Bella Grogan-Canella when she was left with her killer after he'd been smoking meth over a several day period. IMO of all the drugs meth is the worst one to abuse around children. It often makes the user violent and unpredictable. As we've seen in threads here over the years.

Poor baby Emma must have been so frightened! I don't believe JS is telling the truth and I have suspicions about what really happened but I believe Emma did cry out for her mother at some point.

Put this nasty, dangerous man away for good!

His case was updated regarding the warrant. I thought he went straight to jail after he was released from the hospital. Did they need to issue the warrant to do that?

So the current story is that they went into the river November 24, Emma fell in the river November 25, and they were found November 26?

Unbelievable, literally unbelievable. What day did he climb back into the truck? Did he shoot up at some point after they were in the river? Or was he still just high from before going into the river? Since meth has a half life of about 10 hours, I’m going to assume he got high on the 25th while in the river.

Either he was so high that he had no idea of what day it was or he's changing his story to cover something up. I wonder what the water temp was on the 24th and how long a person can stay in it and still survive.

If I understand correctly I think the warrant was just required paperwork. Next up would be an arraignment I guess and possibly upgraded charges although that may not happen until Emma's autopsy report is submitted in full. I'm anticipating some sort of manslaughter charge at the very least.

BTW, unlike Florida or New York, Indiana doesn't require an indictment from the Grand Jury (a true bill) for murder charges.

No cell phone to contact emergency services?

Great question, never seen a cell phone mentioned, and none of the reporters asked the Sheriff in any of the pressors. I don't think I have seen a time published as to when he drove off the embankment/how long the truck was in the river. I guess if it was dark, getting to shore would be more difficult if you were disoriented (high).

Does anyone think the truck is resting on the river bottom?

He said the truck got stuck, so he began rocking the vehicle using the forward and reverse gears, but went too far forward and ended up in the water, which happened about 45 minutes after dropping Miller off on Nov. 24, the affidavit states.

Looks like it was around 4:15 when they went in the river, should have still been light out.
