Normally, my feeling in a case like this would be that this guy has already paid enough, and there’s no reason to pursue legal action.

The fact that he has publicly said that he no longer blames himself, and instead, blames the cruise line, changes things for me.

He doesn’t think he did anything wrong, just like he didn’t think he did anything wrong with a ridiculous amount of traffic infractions.

It’s a pattern, and he needs to get the message.

At the very start of this , when I first read the story, I felt awful about Grandpa being charged. I felt so sorry for him, and for the family. I knew they were devastated and why pile on.

But then I began looking more closely at his ridiculous actions---so irresponsible and negligent.

Then when the lawyer began changing stories, trying various excuses and explanations, and rudely
blaming the Cruise Line, calling them killers essentially---I changed my attitude.

I hope the lawsuit brings them NOTHING in return.

Supposedly they have video of grandpa looking up and down outside the window and he also stuck his hand outside the window because he couldn't find any glass.

Maybe the Wiegands should get a small settlement (half-million or so) as a good will gesture from RCCL since the tragedy happened on their ship, even if MW loses the case. Seems like the right thing to do for all their suffering that will never end, even though SA is really to blame.

MOO

The family has slandered the cruise line, why should they give the family half a million?

I don’t think they should get a dime. I am very much against this.

Still catching up on overnight posts. I saw two reports on the case yesterday - a segment on Inside Edition and the report on NBC evening news. Both featured clips from the news conference. I will not watch the entire presser. This family and their attorney make me sick  I hope RCCL puts up a good fight because this family refuses to accept any responsibility for what happened to Chloe at the hands of her "bestie" grandfather. I'm leaning more and more towards SA having been intoxicated. There's a reason that Chloe's parents did not want him to take a breathalyzer or make an official statement to PR authorities. I think they knew that Grandpa had been drinking and would incriminate himself with the breathalyzer and/or an interview with law enforcement personnel.

Another cbs story this morning - one on one interview with mom and dad - they now are saying there was glass below where Chloe was showing the picture looking down and out - cbs is on the side of Sam it’s really obvious journalism bias IMO - will try to find the link as it’s different than yesterday’s story

Yes, I saw this CBS clip (starts about 22secs in) from an hour ago, and I don't think it is the one you are speaking of ... this one has SA saying that he saw the glass when he was looking down, picked Chloe up, stood her on the safety rail, then as he was adjusting, she slipped.

Thank you. It really jumped out at me that in the press conference today I recall Mrs. Wiegand saying this was "just a misdemeanor" so why should he be charged (something along those lines). Glad the penalty is felony-serious.
BBM He killed her baby. Wow.

I can’t figure out how to bring the clip here - but it was a new story slanted even more in SA favor IMO and ending with the same reporter saying RCCL won’t talk to CBS - and then Gayle and everyone blaming the ship - no mention of him refusing the breathalyzer or him hanging the baby outside the railing - it’s bad reporting IMO

He couldn't "find" glass because the window was open. If he put his hand and head out the window and didn't feel glass, what made him think it was there? Duh!

Is this it? Sounds like it could be. They are really on a big press campaign, aren't they? To smear Royal Caribbean and alleviate all fault from any of them. Multiple TV appearances, pointing fingers elsewhere. And the media is assisting them with that.

I think the goal of the lawsuit filed at this time is to try to get the criminal case tossed. For whatever reason, the Wiegands, KW at least, does not want SA charged in Chloe's death. The media blitz is intended to sway public opinion away from Grandpa and blame RCCL prior to the trial, if there's going to be one. I'm sure they're hoping that prospective jurors see/hear the media reports and are somehow convinced that the cruise line is to blame. I also think that Winkleman is trying to pressure RCCL into a settlement so the case doesn't go to trial. If the cruise line admits to any responsibility for Chloe's death, the criminal case will be moot. I hope Royal Caribbean fights this rigorously!

After watching the video of the news conference the person that looks the most hurt by the loss of Chloe is her father. He almost looks like he wants no part of the lawsuit. He has said nothing as far as the suit goes. I just wonder if Chloes mom and Winkleman are running this show.
imo
Very observant. I wouldn't be surprised if he was an unwilling participant to the lawsuit. After all, he married into the family so he doesn't have his wife's emotional attachment to SA. I'm betting that he has a more clear-headed view of SA's actions than she does and realizes that the cruise company is not to blame.

Yes that’s the one - I meant to check to see if they are only talking to this CBS reporter as he’s been biased from the start IMO - not on question about the logistics of SA actually putting the baby up on the railing either

Parents of toddler who fell from ship speak out on suing cruise line

snipped :
Kim and Alan Wiegand spoke with NBC's Kerry Sanders in an interview that aired on TODAY Thursday after the Indiana couple filed a civil lawsuit against Royal Caribbean alleging the cruise line's negligence contributed to their daughter Chloe's death.
----
"Just four simple words, 'Caution: These windows open,' would have alerted Sam to the danger,'' the family's attorney, Michael Winkleman, said at the press conference Wednesday. "Chloe would still be here today."
-------------
Royal Caribbean issued a statement about the lawsuit.

"Our hearts go out to the family for their tragic loss,'' the company said. "Mr. Salvatore Anello is currently being criminally prosecuted for negligent homicide in the case. We have no comment on the civil filing."
--
Prosecutors say they have security video from the cruise ship that shows Chloe's fall. The Wiegands say they haven't seen the video and never want to see it.
.............
My comments - (I did not watch the video)

So, parents met with individual reporters and gave interviews- wonder if they were paid?

"..four simple words... " - like buckle your seat belt?

Good for RCCL reminding everyone that criminal charges have been filed which would not have happened if the police thought this was purely an accident - IMO

and still they haven't viewed the video - not even a portion showing he held her outside the plane of the window??? that video portion needs to be released IMO.

I'm not surprised comments are being moderated now - this is an outright campaign to convict RCCL and they aren't even on trial.

Have they been paid off by ‘someone’ to be so biased?

What’s all this about, tainting the jury pool?

I am glad that Royal Caribbean isn't going to "try" their case in the media. I firmly believe that what is in the video clearly indicates that SA was negligent and that he, alone, is responsible for Chloe's death. The cruise line bears no responsibility for Grandpa's carelessness and stupidity.

Will you be on the cruise for Christmas? If there are a lot of children on board, please let us know how well they are supervised. Thanks, and Bon Voyage!
