Médecins Sans Frontières: Gaza patients and medical staff 'trapped in hospitals under fire'

Médecins Sans Frontières has warned that patients and medical staff in Gaza are “trapped in hospitals under fire” and called on the “Israeli government to cease this unrelenting assault on Gaza’s health system”.

In a statement released on Saturday, the humanitarian organization said:

Over the past 24 hours, hospitals in Gaza have been under relentless bombardment. Al-Shifa hospital complex, the biggest health facility where MSF staff are still working, has been hit several times, including the maternity and outpatient departments, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
The hostilities around the hospital have not stopped. MSF teams and hundreds of patients are still inside Al-Shifa hospital. MSF urgently reiterates its calls to stop the attacks against hospitals, for an immediate ceasefire and for the protection of medical facilities, medical staff and patients.
Dr. Mohammed Obeid, an MSF surgeon at Dar al-Shifa hospital, said:

There are a lot of patients already operated on and they cannot walk. They cannot evacuate … We need an ambulance to move them, we don’t have ambulances to evacuate all of these patients.
We cannot leave because from [yesterday] morning until now, we operated on about 25 patients. If I am not here or the other surgeon, who will take care of the patients? There is a patient who needs surgery, another one is already sleeping [under anesthesia].
MSF also said that it has lost contact with a surgeon working and sheltering at al-Quds hospital with his family.

Joint Arab and Islamic summit resolution condemns "Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip"

From CNN’s Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem

The final resolution issued by the joint Arab and Islamic summit in Riyadh demands the end of what it describes as Israel’s aggression against Gaza, as well as "war crimes and barbaric, brutal and inhumane massacres."

The statement said the summit rejects the characterization of this “war of revenge as (one of) self-defense” and demands the end of the siege in Gaza as well as the entry of humanitarian aid convoys, including food, medicine, and fuel immediately.

It also demanded the United Nations Security Council take a “decisive and binding decision” that imposes a cessation of aggression.

The resolution also called on the International Criminal Court to conduct an investigation into what it described as war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel against the Palestinian people in all occupied Palestinian territories.

It called on all countries to stop exporting weapons and ammunition to Israel used by its army and the “terrorist settlers who kill Palestinian people and destroy their homes.”

The summit said that a “just, lasting and comprehensive peace” is the only way to guarantee security and stability for the people of the region.

“Protection from cycles of violence and wars will not be achieved without ending the Israeli occupation. ... We hold Israel, the occupying power responsible for the continuation and aggravation of the conflict as a result of its aggression against human rights,” it added.

Charity: Some patients cannot walk, they cannot evacuate

More here from the medical charity Doctors Without Borders, which reported earlier today on conditions inside Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City.

It said that "despite regular attacks and shortages", staff had "managed to keep the hospital operational".

However Dr Ahmed El Mokhallalati, a senior plastic surgeon, said that the hospital was operating on "no more 20% or 15% of the staff".

“Those who are staying in Al-Shifa hospital already decided they are dead," he said..

The Israeli military has stated the hospital is not under siege and that those inside will be given safe passage.

Dr Mohammed Obeid, a surgeon, is quoted by the charity as saying that many patients had recently undergone operations "and they cannot walk. They cannot evacuate”.

The charity called for "an immediate ceasefire and for the protection of medical facilities, medical staff and patients."

First they said that evacuation was not possible in 24 hours and that they needed more time. A month later they say that patients cannot be transferred by ambulance to the humanitarian zone because they cannot walk. Too many excuses, not enough action.

Two premature babies die at Gaza hospital - reports

Two premature babies have died due to power cuts at Dar al-Shifa hospital, Physicians for Human Rights Israel said on Saturday.

“As a result of the lack of electricity, we can report that the neonatal intensive care unit has stopped working. Two premature infants have died, and there is a real risk to the lives of 37 other premature infants” at Al-Shifa hospital, the group said, citing doctors at the hospital, Agence France-Presse reports.

“The hospital is besieged, with no option to bring in the corpses and injured people sprawled outside. There is no movement in or out of the hospital,” the group continued, adding: “The picture we are now seeing at Shifa is no longer of a humanitarian catastrophe – it is a collective death sentence.”

Gaza is currently grappling with a fuel shortage as no fuel has been allowed into the strip in more than five weeks amid Israel’s deadly siege. As a result, numerous hospitals and clinics relying on generators have been forced to shut down, leaving thousands of patients in precarious medical conditions.

Agence France-Presse reports that heavy gunfire and explosions were heard throughout Saturday from its live camera, situated a few hundred metres from the hospital.

UN humanitarian chief says no justification for 'acts of war in health care facilities'

The UN's humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths says there is no justification for "acts of war in health care facilities, leaving them with no power, food or water, and shooting at patients and civilians trying to flee".

"This is unconscionable, reprehensible, and must stop," he says in a statement on X.

His comments follow reports of violence around Gaza's Al-Shifa and Al-Quds hospitals. Al-Shifa hospital has reportedly run out of fuel, and Doctors Without Borders said earlier today that civilians and patients were being shot at when trying to leave the medical facility.

"Hospitals must be places of greater safety," says Griffiths, "and those who need them must trust that they are places of shelter and not of war".

Israel's military says it is not striking Al-Shifa hospital and that there is no siege, with the east side of the hospital open for anyone who wants to leave. But it did acknowledge that there was fighting going on around the area.

They need to say it louder so Hamas can hear. Hamas needs to stop misfiring their rockets into hospitals.

In a statement, Angelita Caredda, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Middle East regional director, has said:

We are horrified by reports of relentless attacks on Gaza’s hospitals. Patients, including babies, and civilians seeking relief are trapped under attack. It is an affront to wage war around and on hospitals.

Those being treated or seeking shelter in hospitals have nowhere else to go. Roads leading to the south are unpassable in vehicles. The harm to patients besieged in hospitals and the lasting effects of depriving the population of major medical facilities in a time of armed conflict may very well be unlawful.

Medical facilities and personnel exclusively engaged in the treatment of the sick and wounded have special protection under international humanitarian law that must be respected in all circumstances. Failure to do so amounts to a grave breach of international humanitarian law.

An urgent ceasefire is needed to avoid further loss of innocent lives. All parties must abide by the laws of war to spare all civilians, including the critically ill and injured and those who tend to them.

Netanyahu says he is against the return of the Palestinian Authority to the Gaza strip on the day after the war.

After 10/7, Israel cannot trust the PA on its own. At least not initial stage.

Faced with the largest crisis in decades, Arafat’s successor appears more powerless than ever. The PA has been absent from the Gaza Strip since Hamas made gains in the 2006 legislative elections and its subsequent victory in the Battle of Gaza, which saw the Islamist group take complete control of the enclave in 2007.

Among Palestinians, the PA is deeply unpopular, seen as corrupt, repressive and in the service of Israel. But it has a semi-functioning political structure, a civilian administration, and security and intelligence services. It also receives financial support from the United States and the European Union as well as Saudi Arabia and other Arab League states.

Israel has no legitimacy and no intention of reoccupying, let alone annexing, the enclave,” he says. “Egypt, which occupied it until 1967, has no interest in taking charge. And no state will send peacekeepers to control the Gaza Strip."

However, for a PA return to be possible, many preconditions need to be met.

"The first condition, which is not easy, is the demilitarisation of Hamas's main forces, meaning its missiles and especially any terrorists who could enter Israel. As long as this condition remains unmet, the Israelis will not stop the war,” says Encel.

“The second condition is massive support from the international community. And the third is that the current Israeli government [of hard-right Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu] collapses in the short term."

They're not terrorists--they're 'freedom fighters'.
Well when those "freedom fighters" decide they would like to take over Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, etc.. and then they attack civilians without warning.. then we will make sure we request cease fires and we'll accuse them of war crimes and make sure those freedom fighters know we are behind their efforts.

It's all fine and dandy until those freedom fighters decide they want your country and to eradicate your people. When will the world look at history and do something different?

Officers have detained a breakaway group of around 150 people from the pro-Palestinian demonstration in Grosvenor Place. The group were firing fireworks and many are wearing face coverings. Officers are using their Section 60 and 60AA powers to detain and search those involved.

PM says Israel will stand against world if needed to defeat Hamas, return hostages

[...]

He says the IDF is inside in Gaza City, “on the outskirts” of Shifa Hospital. Among the many terrorists killed, he says, are many of those who led the October 7 massacres in southern Israel. From Hamas Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar on down, all these terrorists are destined to die, he says.

Turning to the northern border, he again warns the Iran-backed Lebanese terror group Hezbollah against intervening in the war between Israel and Hamas.

[...]

“There will be no ceasefire without the return of our hostages,” he pledges.

[...]

He urges Arab heads of state: “You have to take a stand against Hamas.” The terror group has only “brought disaster to Gaza; only bloodshed and poverty.”

Furthermore, it is an integral part of Iran’s axis of terror and evil, he says, and that axis “endangers the whole world and the whole Arab world.”

[...]

Netanyahu also says the military will remain in Gaza “as long as necessary” to prevent the enclave from being used to launch terror attacks against Israel.

When he thinks of “the day after,” he says, that means “only after the destruction of Hamas. Hamas will be demilitarized; there will be no further threat from the Gaza Strip on Israel, and to ensure that, for all long as necessary, IDF will control Gaza security to prevent terror from there.”

[...]

“If we want peace, we have to destroy Hamas. If we want security, we have to destroy Hamas. If we want to ensure the future of the State of Israel, we have to destroy Hamas. That’s what Israel must do. And that is what Israel will do,” he concludes.

I was being sarcastic. ;)

Gallant to world leaders: How can you ‘preach morals to us at the height of combat?’

Speaking after the premier, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant hits out at criticism of Israel over its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, in remarks that appear partly aimed at French President Emmanuel Macron.

He highlights the fate of Kfir, a 10-month-old baby from Kibbutz Nir Oz. Kfir and his family were abducted to Gaza. Gallant says he has a grandchild the same age. He worries desperately about Kfir, he says. “Who is looking after him… among those savages…? A toddler who doesn’t yet walk… We have a supreme obligation to bring the hostages home.”

In this context, he continues, “I hear some [world leaders] and ask myself and ask them: How can you be so bold as to preach morals to us at the height of combat? One thousand and five hundred soldiers, civilians, women and children were abducted or killed… It happened only a month ago. Everyone saw what happened,” Gallant says.

“I want to say to those European leaders who criticize us: the State of Israel and the people of Israel in 2023 are not in the year 1943.

“We have the means and the obligation to defend ourselves, by ourselves, and that’s what we’ll do. We will not rest until we’ve carried out our mission, and carried it out so that Hamas is defeated,” he adds.

Netanyahu suggests Israel to oppose Palestinian Authority’s return to Gaza after war

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicates Israel will oppose the return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza following the war there against Hamas.

There will not be a civil authority that educates its children to hate Israel, to kill Israelis, to eliminate the State of Israel. There cannot be an authority that pays the families of murderers [amounts] based on the number they murdered. There cannot be an authority whose leader still has not condemned the terrible [October 7] massacre 30 days later,” the premier says, referring to PA President Mahmoud Abbas.

“There needs to be something else there. But in any case we must have security control,” he adds.
