Mom of Gaza hostage: Red Cross acting as ‘Uber service’ for the released, not visiting those held

Rachel Goldberg, whose son, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, was taken hostage by Hamas terrorists at the Supernova desert rave on October 7, shares several new details at a press conference about her son’s abduction.

Her husband, Jon Polin, went to the field shelter for the first time this week, to see where Hersh and his friend, Aner Shapira, attempted to hide along with 27 others.

“Twenty-nine young people were smashed into this space,” says Goldberg, describing the “tiny concrete room.”

The Hamas terrorists first threw hand grenades, then an RPG and then used machine gun fire to kill as many people as possible in the shelter, says Goldberg. Shapira was killed by one of the grenades, after tossing back some seven of them.

Several people survived hiding under corpses and they saw that Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s arm was blown off from the elbow down, says Goldberg. This was confirmed in a video sent to Hersh’s parents by CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

[...]

Goldberg also speaks about the Red Cross, “doing a wonderful job being an Uber service” for the released hostages, but the hope had been that the international medical organization would see the hostages in captivity.

Hamas has said that 10-month-old Kfir Bibas, his brother Ariel, 4, and his mother Shiri have been killed. They said they lost their lives in an Israeli airstrike. This is a dagger to the heart of every Israeli, every Jew and every person of conscience worldwide

“The IDF will rescue our hostages, dismantle Hamas, and do it while minimizing the harm to civilians.”––Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, IDF International Spokesperson

This is Israeli kid Ido Avigal. He was 5 years old when he was killed in 2021, in his house in Sderot, during a major Hamas rockets barrage.Hamas killed Ido.

But today, the Palestinian Delegation presented an exhibition @UNGeneva, which included Ido as a Palestinian child supposedly killed by Israel in Gaza.

This is despicable.

We call on @UN_Valovaya to immediately remove this exhibition, which spreads misinformation and is part of a propaganda campaign.

'We have the green light from the U.S and EU to continue with this operation. The objective remains the same... Hamas should not be in power in Gaza... This operation has to be the last one concerning Hamas,' says Frmr. IDF intelligence officer Raphaël Jerusalmy

Sources say Red Cross has not yet been allowed to visit hostages in Gaza – a violation of truce agreement

From CNN’s MJ Lee, Alex Marquardt and Becky Anderson

Red Cross officials have not yet been allowed to visit hostages that Hamas is holding in Gaza, multiple sources have told CNN – a violation of an agreement struck between Israel and Hamas, which stipulated that the Red Cross would be able to visit the hostages by the end of the fourth day of the truce.

US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said over the weekend that as a part of the Israel-Hamas truce agreement, Red Cross officials would be able to visit hostages still held captive in Gaza “by the end of the fourth day.” Another source familiar with the terms of the agreement echoed that this was an aspect of the deal.

The US has been asking Qatari mediators to press Hamas on Red Cross access to the remaining hostages as well as providing proof of life as part of the US effort to extend the pause and hostage releases as long as possible, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

But the delay in Red Cross officials visiting hostages in Gaza did not appear likely to derail the truce agreement for now, one of the sources told CNN, as Hamas continues to release hostages each day of the pause in fighting.

In a statement to CNN, International Committee of the Red Cross spokesperson Jason Straziuso stressed that the group was not involved in the Israel-Hamas negotiations and that it can “only implement measures that both sides tell us they have agreed to.”

“We've been insisting since day one in direct conversations with Hamas that they release the hostages, barring that, that we be allowed to visit the hostages, and that the hostages be allowed to communicate with their families,” Straziuso said.

“We are ready to visit the hostages held by Hamas to check on their welfare and deliver medication but can do so only if we have permission. We do not know where the hostages are held and could not and would not force ourselves in to visit, action that could endanger anyone being held,” he added.

(This poor woman. I hope she gets to see her daughter)

"I have brain cancer, I don't know how much time I have left and I want to be able to see my Noa," the mother of Noa Argamani, who was kidnapped from the party by the evil ones, begs to be released: "Noa, know that I love you the most and we did everything to get you out quickly."

Haaretz is carrying a detail that a source has informed it that in the negotiations on extending the truce and releasing more hostages, “Israel asked in recent days to examine the possibility of releasing adult male hostages, including the elderly and fathers of children who have already been released, instead of just women, and children.”

The UN has called for the international community to move towards a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, saying Jerusalem should serve as the capital of both states.

“It is long past time to move in a determined, irreversible way towards a two-state solution, on the basis of UN resolutions and international law,” said Tatiana Valovaya, director-general of the UN office in Geneva, delivering a speech authored by UN secretary general António Guterres.

Reuters reports she added this would mean “Israel and Palestine living side-by-side in peace and security with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.”

Hospital says most child hostages in ‘reasonable’ physical health after being freed

Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv provides an update on the former hostages currently being treated at the medical center.

[...]

Without going into detail, Zeltser says although the children were in reasonable condition, they face various medical and psychosocial challenges that the hospital staff are addressing. Most of the children are expected to be discharged in the coming days and will continue to be cared for. Engel, who underwent orthopedic surgery, will stay longer and need physical rehabilitation.

Prof. Ronit Lubetzky, head of the pediatric department, says the children lost 10-17 percent of their body weight during their 50-plus-day captivity, adding that the hospital’s medical staff is working to reintroduce all key nutritional elements, including vitamins, into the children’s diets. This must be done in a way that avoids Refeeding Syndrome, whereby an undernourished person becomes critically or even fatally ill from receiving too much food and drink too quickly.

“We are putting together long-term optimal nutrition plans for the children and we will be following up on this regularly,” Lubetzky said.

So only limited influence? I'm not sure.

In my opinion if Iran cut off all support to Hamas it would greatly help in neutralizing their ability to kill and injure innocent people. And that includes Palestinians.

JMO.
I would go for limited influence.

As for the effect of Iran cutting off supplies, I think it would matter to a limited degree. For example:

Once the know how and machine tools were transferred into Gaza regarding making and using long distance rockets, anti tank rockets etc., the "genie is out of the bottle". Manufacturing these things in Gaza likely easier with continued Iranian support, but it would not be a "show stopper" if Iran stopped helping. Machine guns etc. can be obtained from many sources.

Hamas does, however, use a more sophisticated Russian laser guided missile that is manufactured in Iran as well. I dont think these can be manufactured in Gaza "Mad Max" style. If Iran "pulled the plug", it would probably stop that part of the "show".

The IDF says it has notified the Bibas family of a Hamas statement regarding the wellbeing of three of the family members who are being held hostage by Hamas.
"The Hamas terror organization continues to act in a cruel and inhuman manner," the IDF says, adding that it is investigating the veracity of the information published by Hamas.

As Israel awaits 6th set of hostages, Netanyahu vows war will resume after truce

[...]

In a video statement, Netanyahu says the chief goals of the war are “eliminating” the Gaza-ruling terror group, bringing home all hostages taken in the October 7 massacres, and ensuring the enclave “never again returns to being a threat to Israel.”

Ahead of the expected release of a sixth group of hostages this evening, Netanyahu hails the return of abducted Israelis, which he says last week sounded “imaginary.”

“In recent days I’ve heard a question: Will Israel return to fighting after this stage of returning our hostages is over? My response is an unequivocal yes,” the premier says. “There is no way we won’t return to fighting until the end.”

Hamas says youngest hostage, 10-month-old baby Kfir Bibas, has been killed along with two family members

The armed wing of Hamas said on Wednesday that 10-month-old child Kfir Bibas, his 4-year-old brother and their mother were killed during the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army said it is checking the claim by Al Qassam Brigades. Reuters, who reported it, could not immediately independently verify the claim.

The Bibas family had repeatedly called for the release of the family. Kfir was abducted from Nir Oz kibbutz along with his older brother, Ariel, their mother, Shiri, and father, Yarden. He was the youngest of about 30 children who were taken hostage.

Negotiations are "moving towards civilian men being released," Qatari spokesperson says

From CNN's Niamh Kennedy in London

Negotiations are "moving towards" releasing civilian men held hostage in Gaza, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari told CNN Wednesday.

"Our negotiations regarding women and children take paramount position within the discussions, but obviously we are moving towards civilian men being released," Al-Ansari, also an adviser to the Qatari prime minister, told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

Longer discussions are also being carried out regarding the release of serving Israeli soldiers who are being held, alongside the prospect of brokering a "longer truce" that could "lead to a ceasefire," according to Al-Ansari.

The Qatari adviser did not confirm if any American hostages are on the list to be released Wednesday, responding, "I can't comment on that right now for the safety of the hostages and for the success of the exchange today."

Mom of Gaza hostage: Red Cross acting as ‘Uber service’ for the released, not visiting those held

It's up to Hamas.
If they don't tell the Red Cross where they are, there isn't anything Red Cross can do.

MOO...I think this where Hamas' connection to medical facilities comes into play. MOO

ETA:

CNN is reporting that officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross have as yet been unable to visit hostages in Gaza, which is in contradiction to the truce agreement.

One source told CNN this was unlikely to derail discussions on a further extension. However, the Red Cross has come under criticism from families of the hostages. Rachel Goldberg, whose son, Hersh Goldberg-Polin is being held, has said the organisation is “doing a wonderful job being an Uber service” for the released hostages, but is not providing any medical assistance to those held captive.

CNN quotes Red Cross spokesperson Jason Straziuso saying that it is not directly involved in negotiations, adding:

[We can] only implement measures that both sides tell us they have agreed to. We’ve been insisting since day one in direct conversations with Hamas that they release the hostages, barring that, that we be allowed to visit the hostages, and that the hostages be allowed to communicate with their families.
