War is not an eye for an eye, and even though the gloves are off, I don't expect to see any child beheading or individual families incinerated at a dinner table being done as "catch-up".

Bodies of missing Israelis 'recovered from Gaza' - media reports

The bodies of some of the Israelis seized by Hamas during its attack a week ago were recovered by the Israeli army during a ground raid on Gaza on Friday, Israeli newspapers report.

Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post say that the Israel Defence Force found an unspecified number of bodies, bringing them back to Israeli territory, and found some items belonging to people missing.

Infantry and armoured units took part in the raid during which a Hamas cell which fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli territory was "taken out", the Jerusalem Post says.

Glad this was finally confirmed by an approved source even though very sad. (Hebrew news was correct)

Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Jonathan Conricus is now giving a briefing on the situation in Gaza.

He says yesterday the military issued a demand for Palestinian civilians to move south so that they are not in an area where IDF is “going to enhance our military operations.”

There has been “a significant movement of Palestinian civilians towards the south”, he says, and criticises Hamas for telling citizens to stay put, accusing the group of using “civilians as their human shields”.

He says “we are not trying to kill or injure any civilians”.

As mentioned in the previous post, Israel’s evacuation order has been criticised by the UN’s secretary general.

UN estimates tens of thousands have fled northern Gaza

Here’s a recap of the UN’s estimates on the number of people who have fled their homes in northern Gaza. Overnight, the UN humanitarian office, OCHA, said it believes tens of thousands of people in Gaza have evacuated to the south following Israel’s evacuation warning. Prior to the evacuation order, more than 400,000 Palestinians were internally displaced, OCHA said.

Israel’s military has told about 1.1 million people in northern Gaza to leave ahead of an expected ground invasion. Hamas urged people to stay put and defy the Israeli military order to evacuate homes.

The UN’s secretary general, António Guterres, has said the order is “extremely dangerous – and in some cases, simply not possible”.

UN chief urges Israel 'reconsider' Gaza evacuation order; Biden says crisis a priority | The Times of Israel

The United Nations says that more than 423,000 people had already fled their homes in Gaza, even before Israel’s directive to evacuate the northern Gaza Strip came through Friday.

The IDF notified the United Nations at midnight on Friday that the entire Palestinian population north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza within 24 hours.

The message indicated that the IDF could be readying to launch a ground invasion after a week of aerial bombardment in response to the massive Hamas onslaught last Saturday.

Hamas terrorists killed 1,300 people, a majority of them civilians.

Israeli military accuses Hamas of trying to stop Gazans evacuating

The Israeli army has just held a press conference streamed live on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Lt Col Jonathan Conricus says the Israeli army "advertised our intentions in advance because we want civilians not to be affected by the war". He stresses it does not want to hurt civilians and is only at war with Hamas.

He says the army has seen people listening to their warnings and moving out of a dangerous area.

He says it is "extremely sad and worrying" to see Hamas trying to stop Palestinian civilians from evacuating the area.

More from IDF Spokesperson Conricus. Israeli reserve soldiers have been in formation around the Gaza Strip for several days, he says. “They are all around the Gaza Strip, in the south, in the center and in the north, and they are preparing themselves for whatever target they will get, whatever task,” he says.

“Our aim is very clear. The end state of this war is that we will dismantle Hamas and its military capabilities, and fundamentally change the situation, so that Hamas never again has the ability to inflict any damage on Israeli civilians or soldiers.”

UPDATE: As of this time, the IDF has confirmed that over 120 civilians are being held captive in Gaza by the Hamas terrorist organization.

IDF Spokesperson Conricus tells the briefing that the situation on the northern border is “very tense”.

Hezbollah fighters fired an anti-tank missile towards Israeli troops, he says. “There was a short battle and the situation eventually calmed down. Afterwards, Hezbollah sent drones into Israel and also fired surface to air missiles against the Israeli aircraft.” he says.

“All of those two attempts were successfully intercepted by the IDF, but the situation on the northern border remains very tense and we are monitoring the activities of Hezbollah very closely with additional enhanced capabilities in the north.”

Israel-Hamas war live: UN says tens of thousands have fled south in Gaza; Israel strikes Hezbollah target in Lebanon, says IDF (theguardian.com)

5m ago05.17 BST
IDF Spokesperson Conricus says he wants to address issues raised in media coverage, saying that “Palestinian civilians in Gaza are not our enemies. We don’t assess them as such and we don’t target them as such”.

The evacuation order was aimed at minimising risk to civilians, he says.

“It is extremely sad and regrettable that so many media outlets are focusing on our actions instead of putting the responsibility on the entity that governs the Gaza Strip, and that is Hamas,” he says. “They are the ones who initiated this war. They are the ones who targeted our civilians”

He mentions the various officials who have visited Israel, including Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen, president of the European Commission and Lloyd Austin, US Secretary of Defense.

“European and American leaders are sending a clear message that they stand by Israel, and that they understand that this act of atrocity against Israel is not another round of conflict, and that they fully support our right to defend ourselves against these monsters.”

The UN’s secretary general, António Guterres, warned yesterday that the situation in Gaza has reached a “a dangerous new low”, and called for immediate humanitarian access to allow fuel, food and water to reach those in need. “Even wars have rules,” Guterres told reporters on Friday.

Live updates: Israel-Hamas war rages as Palestinian death toll in Gaza rises (cnn.com)

A week has passed since Hamas' attacks on Israel, and it is still unclear whether Israel has plans to launch a ground assault into Gaza.

Israel has carried out heavy airstrikes on Gaza and signaled there is more to come. It is also tightening a chokehold on the territory even as a humanitarian crisis unfolds.

Israel has ordered more than a million people in Gaza to evacuate southward ahead of a potential Israeli ground operation, according to the United Nations. Many in the enclave left their homes on Friday but people are running out of places to take cover as Gaza turns to a wasteland from Israeli bombardment.

Here's where things stand:
  • Offensive action from Israel: In addition to continued airstrikes, Israeli troops have carried out local raids over the past day in the Gaza Strip, searching for hostagesand collecting evidence to find people taken by Hamas, the Israel Defense Forces said. Meanwhile, Israel has amassed more than 300,000 reservists along the Gaza border for a potential full ground operation. Israel has also been accused by the Palestinian Ministry of Health of the "targeting and killing of medical and ambulance personnel during their humanitarian missions to evacuate the victims of aggression."
  • Humanitarian concerns: The UN said the calls for the evacuation of 1.1 million people in Gaza are “impossible” and has urged the Israeli military to withdraw, according to Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary general. Dujarric said such a mass evacuation would have "devastating humanitarian consequences."
  • What Hamas is saying: A senior Hamas official said Friday that the current situation in Gaza represents "an extraordinarily audacious and brutal endeavor to forcibly remove the Palestinian indigenous people from their land." The official called Israel's actions in Gaza "inhumane" and "barbaric," adding that Hamas "will not surrender our legitimate fight for freedom and self-determination."
  • International input: The White House says national security officials held calls with United Nations officials on Thursday and Friday about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but declined to offer details about progress on getting foreign nationals out of the area. Vassily Nebenzia, the permanent representative of Russia to the United Nations, is circulating a draft resolution at the UN Security Council which calls for a ceasefire in the "Israel-Gaza" war. Hamas said in a statement Saturday morning that it welcomes "Russia's tireless efforts" aimed at stopping Israel's aggression against the territory.
  • Attacks in Lebanon: Israel is conducting drone attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said. It comes after the Israeli military shelled southern Lebanon in response to an explosion at a security fence near the Lebanese-Israeli border earlier Friday, the IDF said. There are rising fears of the Lebanon-based Shia militant faction Hezbollah entering the conflict.
  • Concerns about a wider regional conflict: Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said his country is “extremely concerned” about the conflict in Israel spreading and that it is working to de-escalate the situation. Of Israel's immediate neighbors, it is only at peace with Jordan and Egypt, and is officially in a state of war with Lebanon and Syria. Israel has said it is ready in case there are attacks from those two countries.

I was talking about some of the people leaving. I'm aware that there are way too many people for everyone. However, large cruise ships can carry 10,000 people comfortably. Using deck space and large rooms even more could be used. As medical treatment at least.

In theory this is a good idea, but I don't think anyone would take this chance of transporting thousands of people who may never be able to disembark because no country will take them. Sounds like a disaster in the making. There could also be hostage-taking on board, hunger strikes, and other life-threatening issues and I can't imagine any cruise ship wanting to get involved in this.

Wonder if Gaza even has the appropriate port for a cruise ship?

Was reading a bit about Gaza today.

It was not part of Israel in 1948 when the country was founded

(Neither was West Bank, East Jerusalem or Golan Heights)

What happened? In 1967, President Gamal Nasser of Egypt cut off access to the Suiz Canal. Israel went to war with Egypt in what was known as the Six Day War.

They took Sinai, which included Gaza. Jordan got involved as an Egyptian ally, but Israel defeated them and took the West Bank and East Jerusalem. A skirmish happened in Syria with the Golan Hts and Israel took the Golan Hts.

This happened all within six days.

Now the nitty gritty, which I don't understand.
Over a course of ten years, Israel returned land to Egypt. The Sinai was returned to Egypt. But when it came to Gaza, it seems that Egypt didn't want Gaza because most of the inhabitants were Palestinian and not Egyptian, so Israel was stuck with the territory.

I don't think Israel wanted more Arabs, but they got them.

East Jerusalem was the real prize. West Bank is a nice agrarian area. Not sure about Golan Hts, but it's probably also good for agriculture.

However, I don't think there was much in the way of resources in Gaza. It was just a small strip of land crowded with Palestinians.

By winning a war, Israel which wanted to be a Jewish nation inherited a significant Arab population. (I may be wrong, but this is how I understand this)

That used to be the case.

As a side note, the US Government) technically does not recognize them as "citizens"- because "citizen" implies "country".

Rather, they are recognized as Nationals of the Palestinian Authority or something like that. Taiwan is the same way.

<snipped for focus>

The U.S. doesn't recognize Palestine as a country, nor does the U.K. and many other nations.

With regard to Taiwan, the U.S. has a one-China policy. We recognize Taiwan as part of the People's Republic of China.

These realities have significant foreign policy implications regardless of the identification documents used by people from these areas.

Wonder if Gaza even has the appropriate port for a cruise ship?

Gaza's access to the Mediterranean Sea is limited by Israel to a distance not very far out from the coast/shore. So the Palestinians would need Israeli permission to go further out to sea by using smaller boats to board a large cruise ship. Or maybe they would have to go through Egypt for a port that could handle a cruise ship.
